Old Game Magazines
 

Looking for some feedback. I am in the process of selling off all my old Nintendo/video game collectables and games. In the process of getting this stuff ready to sell I came across my huge chest of old video game magazines.

My market survey is this, is there any really any interest for old magazines (outside of playboy) or should I just pitch these things? I have EGM, CGW, NP, Next Generation, etc. , even the craptacular Gamepro. The reality is these things take up quite a bit of room and I rarely look at them.

I love these things for the nostaligia factor, (I recall going ga-ga over KI and MKII news and speculation) seeing what old games got in reviews, the market perspective before the internet boom, and the games that never came to be, but I think the time has come to either recycle them or ebay them. Thoughts?

I'd go ahead and try Ebay and see what happens. Maybe you get nothing, maybe you make a few bucks, who knows? I doubt they're worth much, though. I think most gamers already have their own collection of old gaming magazines collecting dust.

I just trash mine. I have stacks of old EGMs, Gamepros and Nintendo powers at home from when I was a kid, but I just don't have room in my apartment or any interest in keeping them anyway these days.

Not really a point in keeping them. All the newer articles are ussually archived on the net, and i don't think there is much value in collecting old mags.

I trashed all of my old magazines last year. From when I was about 10 to 18 I bought all of the major magazines every month. I read each one again before trashing them. I really wish I would have kept my complete set of Next Generation though.

Thats what I mostly have (100+), I'll likey list them tomorrow. I tell you what its hilarious rereading these things.

I keep about 6-12 months worth on the coffee table but that's about it. Just takes up too much space.

I'll tell you what's funny. Scanning my old PC Gamers for previews of Duke Nukem Forever. I found an issue from July '97 that said DNF was using the Quake I engine and that it would be released sometime in Spring '98. You know, it's the simple things really... :lol:

It is sad to think it was that long ago it was supposed to be released.

If you have some really old EGM magazines (pre-1994) im currently looking for some magazines from those years.

Off topic, but I love the sig quotes lately. Sam and Max was my favorite comic book when it was out, and The Venture Brothers is my current favorite cartoon.

I actually put mine in my classroom at school for the kids to look at when there is any free time. Then at the end of the year i let them take whatever ones they want home and start over the next year. Granted, this doesn't help you much but i thought i'd share :D

I believe this topic came up before, and there was a market for some of them, particularly complete sets of Next Generation.

I've got much the same lying around, including a whole lot of Die Hard Game Fan.

I'll keep my PCAccelerator, or whatever it was called. Funny stuff.

I have back to issue 32 of March 1992. Let me know what you need, I don't have a solid running that early on, but have several.

I'll hold off on saying anything about 1994 because i have some from that year coming (but only 10). But i will get back to you about that year when the other mags arrive.

As for anything before 1994 (but after #32)

Do you have issues:

36,40,46,47, 51, or 53?


All i know is that finding anything before 1992 is going to be a real pain in the ass and expensive :(

I have a massive collection of videogame magazines, about 95% of which I obtained through free subs. I have every single issue of EGM, and it's amazing how the quality of the mag has gone downhill.

I have issues 46, 51, and 53. In addition I have 1993 Sega EGM Supplement that is about 30 pages long. (Called Sega FORCE). Finally, I have a bunch of those "Fighter Profiles" they inserted with the mags. I'm going to list it on ebay soon, I'll send you the link if you are interested.

Regarding the quality of magazines, simply take an issue of NextGeneration and compare it to any current magazine and its clear the different marketing and production values exist today then yesteryear.

Ever since I purchased EGM Issue #1 back on my High School class trip I've kept every single one since. Its pretty much the same way with Nintendo Power but not because it was a 'great' magazine, I usually re-subscribed to get the free strategy guides. So, I've got about 15 years or better worth of gaming magazines thats taking up space in our storage facility which my wife isn't exactly happy about. I really should toss them but sometimes I like digging out old issues and reading them. Its cool to see how far we've come along since the 8-bit NES days.

Well, I'm obviously not the first to throw my hat in this ring, but I would also like to vote for shipping them out to DVDTalk members. I have a fairly extensive old mag collection that I am always looking to patch and repair.

Good luck with the ebay auctions. Silver age mags (EGM/Next Gen/GameFan) seem to go for around $1 and issue (or less), but hopefully you will make out okay.

I'd be most interested in the magazines and the Sega Force.....the fighters profiles i can live without.

I don't recycle them but I throw them away. I get a couple free OXM or game informer mags through free subscriptions here. I look it over and then throw it away.

I had Computer Gaming World from 1993 to 1997 - every issue. But I had to move. So I dumped them all. So sad, since that was when the writing in game magazines actually were GOOD.

I used to keep them, now I just give them to my teenager inlaws or just toss them.

Maybe someone can help me out. I used to have a subscription to Nintendo Power, but I'd swear that was not the first magazine Nintendo put out. I remember there being a precursor to Nintendo Power that lasted 4 (quarterly?) issues, each like 32 pages long. There was something about it in my Nintendo so we subscribed and then they announced they were doing away with it and Nintendo Power came out.

Am I crazy and dreaming this up?
