Recommend new video card for GTA: San Andreas?

I currently have a Geforce 4 Ti4600, 128 Mb version. I've had it for 3 years now, I think. With GTASA coming out on Tuesday, i just don't think this card will do the game justice. Even with Vice City, there was horrible slowdown when there were lots of on-screen effects. Can someone recommend me a good card for this game?

If this fits better in the Computer forum, please move it.

I'm looking for a video card as well since I have a powerful new computer from HP that doesn't come with even a cheap one

I'm no expert, but after talking to my computer-savy cousin and doing some online resaerch, it seems that the best deal to be found on a good, mid-level card is the ATI X700 Pro which can be had for about $150 at Newegg.com. If you're more of an Nvidia fan, the 6600 GT is just as good (or maybe a bit better) and can be found for about $180 at the same site.

I'm surpised you had trouble with the 4600... I played Vice City with the 4400 and had no slowdown. That said, I now have a 6600GT, and it rocks. And you can overclock it pretty easily, too.

I think either the Nvidia BFG 6600 GT (which I got) or if you can afford it the 6800 GT for GTA:SA. Last year, when I got the GTA:VC I had a Geforce 4200 and I was dying everytime the game rained. I was also playing on a resolution of 1280x1024.

If you are playing at the most on 1280x1024, the BFG 6600 GT is fine.
