my super nintendo died....

so I was thinking about getting an emulator to play some of my old games and such. I know stuff about ROMs and all that jive but I was wondering if I should buy a controller (like which one) or should I get Super Smart Joy and what is the cheapest and best options. I have many SNES games and will probably buy another system eventually. Also, what are some cool hack games that people made and some games that people made english translations for. Thanks.

If you have a PlayStation or PlayStation 2, there are adapters to connect their controllers to your computer via USB. Those match the Super Nintendo controller pretty closely in terms of button layout. I use one from Radio Shack that cost me $10.

The primary reason I emulate games is for translations (mostly roleplaying games). Tales of Phantasia, Star Ocean, Final Fantasy III, and others have all been translated into English.

Has any cool dat sims been translated? Yeah I knew about those games been translated, also Final Fantasy 5 and Radical Dreamers. By the Way, what is the difference between Illusion of TIme and Illusion of Gaia?

i have a dualshock 2 and use an adapter called the "Smart Joy Plus." it works terrific. look for it on ebay.

I have the same type of thing, but I got mine on ebay and it also works with a N64 controller. Vibration isn't supported, but analog is and that's pretty cool when playing some older vertical shooters.

EDIT: What's the going rate for a working SNES these days? Around here a working NES goes for $40-$50.

Gizmo 05-22-05 01:09 PM

Just because you see Game Crazy selling a NES for $40 dosn't mean thats what an average person will pay. Ebay is flooded with many for often $10-$15

"We remember your SNES for the video game system that it was. It was loving, caring, and was always friend. The next few days will be hard, but just remember your SNES is being played on the big TV in the sky. The SNES lived a good life. It will always be remembered. The team of the SNES and 'ChrisKnudsen' was not a team to mess with. SNES 1991 (?) - 2005" "We will never forget"

Cue the pipe organs.

Dat sim... do you mean "dating sim"? I don't know, I've never played one.

i have, its called drink to much at the bar and walk around with a controller in your hand :)

Can you still get the extended warranty? Check with where you purchased it.

ChrisKnudsen 05-23-05 04:57 PM

Yeah some wacky japanese dating sims. I will probably play all the translated RPGs. My SNES isn't dead now for I just traded out a new power cable. Whatever. Already ordered the thing to use playstation controllers on the PC and I bought that Ps2 controller that looks like an old school Nintnedo controller.

ChrisKnudsen 05-31-05 04:46 PM

For some odd reason, I can't get the controllers to work at all. I conntected to the USB and nothing is working. Damn!

ChrisKnudsen 06-01-05 04:35 PM

I got the drivers and still none functioning. I am going to update Direct X to see if that helps.

kvrdave 06-01-05 06:37 PM

Having tried that in the past, I found that nothing beats the console. I would spring a few bucks on ebay and just get another one.

coladar 06-01-05 07:18 PM

I second what someone said earlier about using a PS/PS2 controller. I've actually been replaying Super Metroid for the last couple of days, my PS2 controller works perfectly.

I guess I've been lucky though. This thread prompted me to check, and my NES, Sega/Sega CD/Sega 32x, SNES and Atari Jaguar all still work. And in another year I'll have had my NES for two decades. Scary considering I'll only be 22.

ChrisKnudsen 06-01-05 10:09 PM

is there anything special you had to do?

coladar 06-01-05 10:34 PM

No. I'm using the "SmartJoy Plus" and I just plug the PS2 controller into it and it into the computer, and it's like any other USB PC joystick. It came with a floppy with drivers, but they weren't needed.

What adapter did you buy? I'll take a look around and see if I can find a solution for you. Just to verify though, if you go into control panel and then click on game controllers, the joystick isn't showing up? Sometimes there can be a problem with the emulator not recognizing the joystick.

Trust me, once you get it going, it'll be worth the effort. Even though my SNES is working and I own most of the games I play, ZSNES or a like emu is just infinitely better. I've got the Emu going fullscreen on my HDTV with something like Super 2XSai or HQ3X, and the graphics are just so much improved.

Then you have the fact that you can save anywhere in the game, play translated games etc. So even though your SNES is still going, consider it a blessing. You're going to be in for a much better experience.

ChrisKnudsen 06-01-05 11:38 PM

I got a Super Dual Box from May Flash. I noticed from another forum that they had trouble with Mad Catz controllers. Damn it.

coladar 06-02-05 12:36 AM

Yep, looks that way. :( I assume this is probably the forum/post you saw, but just in case... Link and another

I take it you don't own a PS/PS2. If I were you, I'd try exchanging the controller. It sounds like the RetroCon has problems with a number of adapters for some reason.

ChrisKnudsen 06-02-05 05:04 PM

I should get a Smart Joy for $12 then. I just want to use these controllers!

lotsofdvds 06-04-05 12:58 PM

Is anyone going to ditch their SNES if the new Revolution will truly let you download all the games you have on carts?

ChrisKnudsen 06-08-05 12:46 AM

I went ahead and ordered the SNES controllers to USB port thing.
