is this ps2 salvagable???????
 

About 2 days ago I turned on the power of my ps2 and the light of the disc tray didn't come on and the ps2 showed nothing on the screen. Is it a power thing or is the disc reader just dead? Should I sell it on ebay or fix it?

Check if the fan is running, if its not, most likely a power thing.

Call sony. They're very forgiving on the warranty.

Well the fan is working just fine, I called sony it's just out of warranty and they wanted to charge like $85 to fix it.

This is a long shot, but if youre 100% sure sony wont fix it, you could give this a shot. Open it up, and check all the connections, there is a thin ribbon cable that hooks up from the mainboard to the buttons in the front. I bought a ps2 on ebay once that had the problem you are describing, and I got lucky, turned out that cable had came off from a drop. It is a long shot, but just check everything is hooked up in there. Havent done any ps2 troubleshooting in AGES so I cant think what else could be wrong off the top of my head, but I would start with that.

Well I opened it up and it looks fine, Unless anyone else has any advice I'm just going to sell it on ebay.

does the drive open and close? are you getting power? are you getting video connection. the ps2 is just like a freaking computer when it comes to not working theres a crapload of things to check, same as xbox, cube etc.

I'm having a problem with my PS2, too. Lately when I have a game in there, there will be a rattling sound (the disc, I'm assuming) and the game will freeze up for a bit, the sound will stop, the game unfreezes, and then the cycle repeats itself later on.

It got so frustrating that I wound up hitting the top of the PS2, and putting a mark onto my MVP 2005 game. Thanks to that, everytime I go to play a game, the loading screen freezes up right before the loading is complete.

Looks like I'll need to do some purchasing, switching at Best Buy this week.

It's clear, concise.... It doesn't tell me anything, but that adds to the mystery...

Looking through his posts, I'm going to assume he was directing my attention towards the thread about his PS2 and the similar sounding problem it experienced.

So what's the consensus? Should I call Sony or just do the switch at Best Buy? I just played MVP 2004 (the disc, which is beyond messed up looking) and it worked fine. Yet the one scratch on MVP 2005 has made it so it's not possible to play any of the actual games found on it. Annoying.

Try calling Sony first. They fixed mine free and i had it back in less than a week. Top-notch service in my opinion.

I'll try that. Was yours under warranty? If not, how long had you had it?

Very out-of-warranty. Original style PS2. Had it at least 3 years. When it started grinding i opened it and realized i didn't know what the hell i was looking at. Luckily Sony still took it, and still fixed it. I would recommend calling first, and not opening it.

I was just as straightforward as possible. I said i was getting a grinding noise whenever i play now, and the game would stop playing. Eventually mine would start to say DISC READ ERROR after a minute or two of grinding. And i've heard that the sony reps listen for "disk read error" as a magic word to offer a free repair. So you might want to mention that after the grinding noise you get a disk read error.

I was doubtful that they'd fix mine without charging me. But they blew me away with how they handled the situation.
