Hooking up Gamecube to component video?

I see Nintendo sells a component cable for the Gamecube, but they say only the older Cube's support it. http://www.nintendo.com/gcnlarge?gal...ry&currentNo=8

But when you go to more details, it says:

"The Digital A/V Output port was removed from systems produced after May, 2004 (these systems will have a model number of DOL-101). If you have a Nintendo GameCube without this port, and you wish to play your games in progressive scan, c

I haven't had a chance to call, but reading that, I assume there is a way you can hook up newer cubes with this cable? Otherwise, why would they say "please call our Consumer Service department at 1-800-255-3700, to discuss available options."

Has anyone done this?

Josh H 02-24-05 09:53 AM

No way to hook up newer cubes with it. See if yours has the digital out put, you could have bought an older produced one after that date as GCs don't fly off the shelves.

If not, give Nintendo a call, another member said he called and they swapped him with a refurbished unit that had the digital out.

ylomnstr 02-24-05 09:59 AM

Sweet thanks. Will do! Maybe they'll swap mine out too.

DJ_Longfellow 02-24-05 10:27 AM

Yeah, they will swap it for a refurbished unit....kinda sucks though since you are trading a NEW cube for a refurb.

Oh well...i don't own one

ylomnstr 02-24-05 10:28 AM

Well, I bought mine used on Ebay, so if I swap it, can't be that bad :) I'll call them in a bit, see what they say.

You know what goes real well with a Gamecube running in progressive scan (besides surround and Metroid Prime)? Wavebirds.

ylomnstr 02-24-05 10:50 AM

Workin' on it :)

nickdawgy 02-24-05 12:08 PM

On a side note, can you get digital sound out of the Gamecube?

No, the best the Cube can do is Dolby Pro Logic II through the standard stereo cables.

ylomnstr 02-24-05 12:29 PM

Well, got my return number. They will swap it out for me. Pretty cool.

Josh H 02-24-05 01:17 PM

Glad they hooked you up. Nintendo's customer service is fantastic.

I bought the Mario Kart bundle back in November...platinum Gamecube without the the digital video out...and I'm wondering...if I want to swap it with an older model from Nintendo, is there a chance they are going to send me an Indigo or Black model?

I want the port but I also would like to keep it Platinum.

ylomnstr 02-24-05 05:08 PM

I asked the guy I talked to if they would match my black set that I have now. He said they would probably try but no guarantee. He said if I had a platinum set, there was probably no chance of getting a platinum unit with the component out.

what about the S-Videocable? Does that improve as well as the component?

BBEANLPHIE 02-25-05 10:26 AM

the s video is a giant leap over the regular composite cables. Honestly when comparing s video to component cables you wont realize any HUGE difference unless the game has progressive scan enabled with the component cables. Other than that nothing huge. I have been playing RE4 in progressive scan and 2 words EYE POPPING

Josh H 02-25-05 10:39 AM

Yeah, component only makes a really noticeable difference on progressive scan games (assuming you even have an HDTV).

S-video is a huge improvement over composite, even on my 27" Wega, so definitely go up to that. The $10 mad catz and other s-video cables are good enough IMO.

Where is the cheapest place to get Component cables for the GC? I've looked on the official site and the cables are on back-order until Jan 06. I also checked play-asia and lik-sang, but I couldn't figure out how much shipping would be at lik-sang.

Gizmo 10-03-05 07:52 PM

Ebay...expect to pay around $40 though.

darkside 10-03-05 09:47 PM

Crazy. I bought my component cables from Nintendo recently when I got my HDTV and they were in stock. Funny how no one uses them, but Nintendo is always sold out.

I decided to replace my launch Cube a couple of weeks ago because it seemed like it was having problems from time to time reading discs. I figured it would be easier to buy a new one instead of getting a four year old console fixed. Finding a Cube with the component port was nearly impossible, but strangely enough the local Circuit City had one of the older models among all the new ones. Its an old one too, because it was made back when they still made them in Japan. Hopefully it will last me another 4 years. The Japan ones are tanks. I'm just glad it was a black console instead of one of the purple ones.

There's one a-hole on ebay that must have bought Nintendo's stock out b/c he's constantly got about 15 auctions going for $40 + $10 shipping.

That pisses me off, but I'm more pissed at Nintendo for allowing that to happen. WHy can't they just make more of them and keep them in stock. Or better yet, have them available in STORES!

gameover2k2 10-04-05 05:45 PM

I still have my Zelda gamecube, silver i think. in the box.. i thought i bought it awhile ago... anyone know if it has component cable out? thanx

Outlaw 10-04-05 05:55 PM

why not just open and check, there's no tape or anything if you have to return it.

gameover2k2 10-04-05 06:02 PM

yeah.. i'll try to check it out.. i think it's in the garage somewhere.. it will require lot of effort to dig it out.. i hope it has the component though.. so once i get to play it i can utilized the progressive scan..

Exactly. Hopefully they'll think of that when they're making their decision about HD support on the Revolution. I think it's fairly impressive that there are so many people willing to place a $40 order online at basically the only store that carries the cables that they're constantly out of stock.
