The rosters are wrong also. Magglio and Delgado are STILL Free agents. I thought ESPN got this right (correct?) I went on LIVE and it said to dl new rosters, so I did....and they were STILL WRONG. Now Schilling is a free agent....weird.

I'm not passing full judgement yet. I have 2K5 on the way....it shipped yesterday I believe....so hopefully I'll have it early next week.

I may switch from ESPN to MVP, but we'll see. I've liked ESPN the past few years....

Ordonez was a free agent in ESPN, so I had to manually assign him to the Tigers. Delgado was already with the Marlins, though. Sammy was still with the Cubs, too.

IGN's review is up. As usual they're falling over themselves praising EA and mourning the loss of the series (which as we all know is just Take Two's response to the hardball game that EA started). I really need to see some MLB 2K5 reviews before I open up my game. If MVP is really a lot better, I'll return my copy of the other; but I need to hear from someone other than the baffoons who praised Madden 2005 to high heaven when it was released and then four months later picked ESPN NFL as the sports GOTY.

The only thing it bounced off of was the grass. No outfielder contact at all. Strangest thing I ever saw in a baseball game. My friend says this has happened before in past games (Not just ESPN, all of them) but I had never seen it until now.

Awww crap......I was hoping ESPN had it right. I mean they have pics on their site of Sammy on the Orioles. The Tigers are my team too....looks like I will have to make some adjustments.

Hopefully DL rosters come quick, just to correct the current offseason transactions. We'll see what game I like better though

ALSO, does 2K5 have a way to control the velocity of a fielders throw...ala MVP?

Yep, regular throws and bullet throws I believe.

Mad Dawg 02-25-05 01:44 PM

As Third Baseman pointed out, the rosters are up for MVP. I've been through them quickly, and they seem pretty solid. All big name FAs prior to 1/12 are on their teams, Sammy's an O, and quickly glancing at the Sox, even the jersey numbers for guys like Wells and Payton have been updated. Another bright spot, since I don't want to sit here and edit every non-MLBPA guy and top 100 prospect is that you can now edit any player on any team in Dynasty mode. Now if they would allow new roster updates in the middle of Dynasty, that would be cool, but it looks like they don't.

nickdawgy 02-25-05 05:47 PM

Noticed a couple more minor bugs in ESPN 2k5. John Miller said something about how my team was 3-7 in my last 10 games. I was actually 5-3 for the season, so there was no way that was true.

Then in another game, John asked Joe Morgan how my team did last game, and he says something like

"Not so good, they're coming off a loss, hopefully they can win today to make up for it."

The problem was, I'd won my last game 7-0.

So they're like I said, minor, but still annoying.

Is there a home run derby in MLB 2k5?

How exactly would you expect that to work? -confused- -eek- -screwy-

Decker 02-25-05 10:43 PM

Well, it looks as though IGN's review of MLB 2K5 is up as well.
They clearly like MVP better, but this doesn't sount too bad, either

Closing Comments
If all you care about is online, MLB 2K5 is the way to go. It plays great and the addition of online leagues is a huge plus. However, MLB 2K5 still has a ways to go if it intends to compete with the memory of MVP next year. The animations need a complete overhaul, the AI definitely needs a reworking, and the Franchise Mode has to see significant innovation outside of a nicer interface. Stop adding mini-games and take a stand on the type of pitching and hitting interfaces you want players to use. As long as there are a half-dozen options, there's no way to tune gameplay to perfect fit each hitting style. Pick one and make a great game.

Though 2K Games and Visual Concepts don't have to sweat competition from EA next year, that doesn't mean they get a free pass. This is the only hope for a cross-platform baseball game. For that reason MLB 2K6 needs to be an awesome display. The groundwork is there, but it remains to be seen if VC has the vision and ability to make the greatest baseball game the world has ever known. We'll find out next March. Until then, MLB 2K5 is a great experience worthy of a spot on your shelf.

IGN's Ratings for MLB 2K5 (Xbox)
Rating Description
out of 10 click here for ratings guide
9.5 Presentation
Wow. Fantastic presentation that comes as close to an ESPN broadcast as I've ever seen.
8.0 Graphics
Great stadiums and nice crowds, but the animations hurt considerably.
9.0 Sound
Johnny Damon at the plate and from the crowd comes, "Cut your hair Hippie!" Brilliant.
8.5 Gameplay
It's a simple game. You throw the ball, you hit the ball, you catch the ball. MLB 2K5 does all of this just fine, but isn't as polished as it could be.
8.0 Lasting Appeal
The Franchise Mode seems a bit old, but the online play is great. All of the gimmicky stuff like bonus modes make me want to play less, not more.
8.5 OVERALL
(out of 10 / not an average)

I picked up Powered by Espn tonight and it seems pretty cool, except for the ridiculous amount of web gems.

 Don't bring me down with your silly details.

I think the happy medium would have been to have included a single season option with the capability to use roster updates. I just prefer to keep accurate rosters, and I'm sure I'm not alone. Once I get 15 games into dynasty and teams start making silly trades, I begin to lose interest.

nickdawgy 02-26-05 04:40 AM

Some more weird bugs for ESPN 2k5...

3 weeks into my season, and there hasn't been one player of the week award. Also, the hot/cold hitters section is always empty. You telling me not a single player in the majors is having a hot or cold streak?

Also, not a bug, but I thought it was funny in the training video, John Miller calls the game ESPN Major League Baseball 2k5

Holding on to the past, I guess :D

Deadman31 02-26-05 09:20 AM

Is anyone else having a problem adjusting their lineups in franchise mode? Half the time it says I have a bad lineup vs. LHP or something, and also when I go to move people around in the batting order, alot of times nothing happens. Also, in my lineup vs. RHP with DH, one of my players is missing and I dont know how to get him in the lineup which for some reason has 2 DH's and no SS. The player isnt listed on my bench even though he is in my other lineups and I have adjusted my depth charts all around. I think this could be a major bug.

rotfl

AKA ... start a new dynasty.

Which game, Deadman?

nickdawgy 02-26-05 03:07 PM

Sounds like Deadman is referring to MVP. I think I had the same problems with MVP 2004.

Deadman31 02-26-05 03:33 PM

Sorry. I just realized I didnt say which game. It is actually Powered by ESPN. :)

nickdawgy 02-26-05 04:21 PM

Wow, so they both have the same bugs in the lineup.

Deadman31 02-26-05 04:49 PM

I think I found another ESPN bug and this one really sucks. If the computer throws a low pitch and you swing at it(doesnt appear to be a full swing just a tap of the button but it will be called a strike anway) with a runner on base, it will be a wild pitch. This has happened to me at least 10 times.

As far as the lineup bug, the only way I have found to fix it is to let the computer set the lineup for you.

Third Baseman 02-26-05 06:26 PM

No. Last years MVP had some lineup issues if I recall. Not this years.

DJ_Longfellow 02-26-05 07:46 PM

Sounds like the commentary is pretty lackluster in both games. I've been playing MVP and the commentary is pretty bad.

They said my pitcher is not likely to striek anyone out, then in the next breath he said he WAS a strikeout pitcher....

Not much variety with MVP commentary either. The vendors are nice in the surround sound though

Tarantino 02-28-05 12:40 AM

So...any word on which one to get yet?

Does any website yet list the unlockables for the games?

The commentary on ESPN is awesome, save for a few mistakes here and there.

I know MVP has a bunch of unlockables....

119 jerseys I believe

There are also a handful of stadiums....like Tiger Stadium, OLD Fenway (in classic mode...a sepia colored screen) and a bunch of other ones

I think there are also 50 old-time greats to unlock.

I'm really liking MVP....I have ESPN on the way because I ordered it. But from the sound of it, MVP looks to edge it out, just a little bit.

Setzer 02-28-05 09:33 AM

Ok, I'm addicted to the Pitching mini game in MVP. It actually took away from my WoW playing this weekend.

I'm hooked on the hitting game, even though I can't seem to get past level 11. The pitching mini-game is driving me up the wall. Are you doing timed or untimed?

Timed. Haven't tried untimed yet. I'll have to give the hitting one a try tonight. I must say these are a nice little addition to this year's game. My only gripe so far has been with Dynasty mode. I wish there was a way I could import my Dynasty save from last year's game and continue it.

Mad Dawg 02-28-05 12:41 PM

Well, I seem to have discovered why the pitching mini-game was driving me crazy. I didn't realize that the black blocks corresponded with a pitch. I thought they were just obstacles. I'm so ashamed.

nickdawgy 02-28-05 12:54 PM

Another bug in ESPN, at least I think so....whenever I foul a ball off, whether it bounces in the dirt or grass, it never bounces into the stands. Never. If it's a fair ball, sure, it will bounce in the stands. Kind of annoying.

Oh and I also noticed the "wild pitch" bug happens constantly in the same situations.

Setzer 02-28-05 01:34 PM

You know what? I thought the exact same thing first 2 times I played it. Was wondering why it was so hard to rake up high scores. I kept hitting the 'L' trigger to change the grid and get penalized a few seconds. Finally realized there was another pitch I could throw.

So don't feel too ashamed man. :)

nickdawgy 02-28-05 02:28 PM

Yet another ESPN bug.

No night games in GM and franchise modes. I have played 15 games, and all were day games. Even if the time was for a night game. This is really annoying.

I love the game, but the glitches and bugs are really starting to make me want to switch to MVP. Only that annoying Tessie song has kept me from trying MVP out.

Third Baseman 02-28-05 03:03 PM

ESPN sounds like last years MVP. rotfl

MVP this year has been perfect for me. No bugs. No glitches. No "what the fuck, this sucks" comments from myself. I love it. I wish I had MORE time to play it.

Mad Dawg 02-28-05 03:06 PM

I'm starting to dread picking up 2K5, even though the presentation is supposed to be spectacular. I'll still probably bit the bullet, but I'm disappointed with what I hear. I guess the bright spot of MVP being so similar to last year's is that I have yet to run into a non-commentary bug.

And nick, I like Tessie, but I'm starting to hate it. For some reason, I don't think it really plays as Hideki Matsui steps up to the plate at Yankee Stadium like it does in the game.

nickdawgy 02-28-05 03:56 PM

Mad Dawg, I liked Tessie, too. At least the first few times I heard it. I thought it was awesome with the Sox winning and all. But now it's like they sold out, it's all over the place, and I even hear it alot in CA.

As for 2k5, if you haven't played it, definitely play it. The bugs annoy the shit out of me, but the game more then makes up for it. Just hearing the baseball tonight theme in between innings is enough to keep me playing

I am seriously still thinking of picking up MVP for PC, I really want to try it. Also, since it's on the PC, I can use the ditty importer and can avoid hearing Tessie 20,000 times :D

Mad Dawg 02-28-05 04:48 PM

Well, if there is any reason for you to get MVP, it's that Vlad is a monster in the game. He crushes everything, plus he gets to balls quickly in the OF, and of course he's got a gun. One of the best, if not the best, overall player I've used in the game.

Al Padrino 02-28-05 08:29 PM

Anyone having more trouble hitting in MVP 2005 than last year's? It was tricky at first last year, but I caught on quickly. This year, the strike zone is lower to correspond with the pitcher's mound, so perhaps the "new" K Zone is what's throwing me off, but holy shit, I suck ass at hitting. My team in Owner's Mode is the bomb at pitching, but thanks to my pitiful hitting, I'm like 3-6. Anyone having similar problems or got any tips to improve my hitting?

Vlad is awesome, indeed. His 9 RBI game vs the Sox last year was incredible. He has one of the purest swings in baseball. He just swings at the first pitch alot :D

If balls not bouncing high enough when foul and all day games being played equals broken gameplay on fair balls ("Nice power, lefty hitters", among others), that's true.

Kicker_of_Elves 03-01-05 12:04 AM

I played some MVP 2005 on Live today and it was great. The last game went to 22 innings and i ended up finally scoring 4 runs to win it. Struck the other guy out 24 times (he got me 13 times). First time i've played a baseball game online and it was a fucking blast. It's a great game for $30.

I havent noticed a difference in the hitting at all... but i do know what youre saying about the mound and the strike zone. I suggest the Hitting Mini-Game. It's a blast to play, and it will defieneitly improve your offensive game.
