Retro Game Challenge #29 (2/13-2/20)

Week 29 is over!
The Rules:
  1. To enter, you just play one of the games and post a screenshot (F12 key in MAME) with your score.
  2. The deadline to post your high scores will be Sunday 9:00 PM Eastern US time.
  3. When you post a high score, pick a new game to play by the deadline. The sooner the better.
  4. The game should be at least 10 years old and one we haven't played before.
  5. Any scores you submit should be played during the week of the contest using no continues or any features of the emulator that you wouldn't get by playing the actual machine.

So far we have only been using MAME to play the games, but that can change, if the winner so chooses.
New to MAME? Feel free to ask questions here or read the tutorials
I am going to host the current ROMs and list of all the past winners and high scores here.

The Games:
(click the titles for info and how to play)

Rally-X (Midway) - Score to beat: Devilshalo 49320

R-Type (US) - Score to beat: Lampei 242600

World Class Bowling (v1.66) - Score to beat: D300

The Prize:
Whoever gets the high score for one of the games picks the next game that replaces it, so we should always have 3 to choose from. You also get your name engraved permanently etched onto this eye catching trophy with a genuine Sharpie!

This Week's Winners:

I'm just wondering what we do when someone scores 300

If there's a tie at 300, my suggestion would be to have them play a 2-player game and the maximum score would be 600. We could do this up to a 4 player game. I don't think anyone can get 48 strikes in a row for 1200.

OK, sounds simple enough. If you can't get 48 strikes in a row, then I'm pretty sure nobody else will

May as well get my first shots in while I'm up.

Anyone know why you get a foul in the bowling game? I can't figure it out and it's driving me crazy.

Thanks

In real bowling it's when you step over the line before you release the ball. The only way I could figure out to avoid it in this game is if the ball didn't release and stops close to the line, back it up and try again. I still fouled alot and only scored like 130 something at the most.

EDITED to update my screenshot.

OK. This is possibly the EASIEST game I've ever played. Seriuosly. This score is the second game I played. The first game I scored a 270 and that's because I didn't know what the hell I was doing. I've rolled a strike on every roll except my very first three (which were all gutterballs).

I'm assuming this game uses a trackball?? If you use a keyboard, it's incredibly easy.

Using a keyboard is against Rule 5 for this game
You're supposed to use a mouse or trackball. 'Fess up if you used a keyboard ~M~

Well, my mistake.

You should have specified that. I feel so dirty now. I've never used a mouse in any of these games, but I've never had my name on that trophy either... so I guess it hasn't been an issue.

I'm specifying it now because I didn't know It didn't even occur to me to try the keyboard.

Roto, our tournament director has just disqualified 19K for using illegal equipment . I had no idea the game was that easy with a keyboard either.

The foul occurs because the ball is rolling too slowly over the foul line.

I had R-Type for the Sega Master System. I never played the arcade version until it was emulated in RAGE, and I was surprised how good the SMS port was. There really is no difference in the game play that I can tell.

Now, I don't know if I want to fess up that I used a keyboard if 19k did so well.

Sorry folks, did know it was trackball/mouse only. It was late in the night and I was holding my one month old, trying to get her to sleep.

Disqualified!
OK, since the high score is back to 0

If you get a lot of faults, hit the Tab key, go to the analog control settings and raise the Y-Axis sensitivity. That will allow you to roll the ball faster.

You try to get her to sleep by playing a noisy bowling game?

She wouldn't sleep in her crib. Only in my arms, while I played D2 or bowing. She would wake up every time I put her down.

I was up till 2:30am

It was Diablo 2, hardcore game play. I don't really recommend it one handed while holding a baby.

Oh yea, here is my score using a mouse
