"Nintendo Eyeing the Big Screen"

Looks like Nintendo is going Hollywood...

Japanese video game giant Nintento is going to Hollywood by creating an in-house unit to develop animated features based on the numerous properties owned by the company behind the GameCube and Game Boy systems, reports Variety.

Nintendo consultant and former president Hiroshi Yamauchi has put together a plan for the company to get into film production. According to reports in the Japanese press, the plan calls for Nintendo to create a movie based on one of its own franchises for theatrical release in 2006.

If it adopts the plan, Nintendo would become the first video game company to establish a theatrical film production unit. The company previously licensed its "Pokemon" and "Super Mario Bros." games for feature films.

What about Square? Didn't they have at least partial ownership of the company that made Final Fantasy?

This could be both profitable and at the same time, if done well, and great way to movie more systems - added exposure.

It is also a huge gamble. Bad movies will not be helpful in selling games, systems or movie tickets.

They formed Square Pictures and had a studio in Hawaii. That counts. I guess people just forgot about it.

I think they'll have more success with animated movies as all live-action video game films end up as stinking turds.

Mario could NEVER translate into a decent movie! However, Zelda and Metroid could be done.

I thought that was to bad too, but with this news it could just mean Nintendo cancelled outside development and moved it in house. It could be the movie they plan for 2006. Unlikely, but I like straw sometimes.

I'm fairly positive that Sony was the one who had money invested in the Hawaii studio, something to the tune of 20% or so. Nonetheless, after the horrid bomb Final Fantasy was, they made the Flight of Osiris and closed up shop. They are, no more.

And...I'm glad John Woo's Metroid fell apart. That had all the signs of not being good.

If you thought that was too bad ( canning Metroid movie) Why would you say earlier that: "A Metroid movie is already being made."?

Uh... Are you refering to an old topic or something I've forgotten about or something? Since you directly quoted Josh Hinkle I'm assuming not. If you are refering to an old topic that doesn't make any sense either.

I really wonder about this board sometimes.

Maybe we'll finally see Mario's reaction when he finds out "This is not the right castle".

I thought I remember reading somewhere that their movie is going to be based on a japanese poem, so it might not necessarily be a mario movie.

this is a good move for nintendo though, if the FF movie helped Square create such awesome cinema's for their games, hopefully this will develop some great cg talent at nintendo (though used in games minimally I hope).

Based on the subject I had a different expectation. Imagine a movie theatre full of people with WaveBirds all playing on the same screen. I'm sure someone could come up with a single screen game that a hundred people could play simultaneously.

Anyone out there got an idea for one?

Considering how the SMB movie did I can't see them trying it again.

I think they will follow Pixar or Dreamworks instead. Adopt a Shrek-like audience since that market has been and continues to be a moneymaker. Afterall, Pokeman has been doing well for them the last few years, correct?.

If I could pick anything for them to do it would be Link without a doubt. Anyone remember the old Zelda cartoon? I don't think I've seen that in over a decade!

Really? I would pick Pokemon Channel. It would be a movie in which you watch a kid watching Pikachu watch TV.

I'd say you've had a good decade.

How about a sequel for "The Wizard"?

I'm sure Fred Savage, could use the work.
