It would be nice if the ability to have more than 1 hearthstone would be added, either by buying an additonal one or a new quest to win a 2nd hearthstone.

Somebody actually posted this request the other day, and Eyonix replied:

Outside of some polish we wish to add to both existing and non existing flight paths, we're quite pleased with the amount of time it takes to travel from place to place. Azeroth is a very large place, and it shouldn't feel completely painless when traveling to a distant location.
Why a game company thinks anything in a game should be even slightly painful, I don't know, but it seems like they're set against the idea.

I too would love it. Make it a lvl 50 requirement (or 60 even). Getting to Winterspring to hunt is a major pain in the butt right now.

To be fair, compared to a lot of MMORPGs, WoW is pretty light on the timesinks. Ever travel in the early days of EQ? Holy crap that was mind numbing, especially for melee characters.

It looks like they'll be adding a new teleport in...to the Battlegrounds. I can see people using that to jump continents quickly, and then going /afk in order to pop outside.

Saying it's has less unnecessary time sinks seems to be damning with faint praise, to me at least. Just b/c EQ got it horribly wrong doesn't mean that WoW hasn't adopted a lite version of some of EQ's bad habits.

Groucho 06-20-05 08:42 AM

It's a tough balance. Too much travel time, and people are bored. Too little and you lose the feeling of a "world" and everything becomes a "Station of the Cross."

Don't get me wrong, I would like to see a second hearthstone for capped characters. And "Express" flight paths as well.

But, as implemented I think the travel system is pretty good. What's the longest it takes for a mounted character to get from one point to another? 10 minutes perhaps?

I don't really have a problem with the travels intra-continent... it's when you start moving cross continent that things become wonky.

If I want to go from IF to Winterspring, I have to jump on a gryphon, head to the Wetlands, try to catch a boat to Auberdine, take a flight from Auberdine to either Felwood (or Moonglade, I think), then another flight (or run) to Winterspring.

That's just not fun. I can see making players "see the world" the first time, but it's getting repetitive now.

They could solve a lot of the problem by fixing the damn Auberdine/Theramore flight path, so it would be a straight shot. It shouldn't be quicker to take a boat from Auberdine to Menethil to Theramore than to FLY from Auberdine to Theramore, but it is.

EDIT: They could also make things better by making all flight paths connect too. It makes no sense that a griphon can fly all the way from Auberdine to Theramore, but not directly from Auberdine to Winterspring.

Groucho 06-20-05 09:18 AM

I'm a Horde player, and we bitch a lot about how Blizzard "favors" alliance. But I think we have it a bit easier on travel.

For me, Winterspring is a straight shot from Orgrimmar (and it's arguably one of the most gorgeous flight paths in the game).

Maybe that's why we're disagreeing. I recently rolled a Horde on Feathermoon (Grimgraw, an orc shaman), and I've got to say... being able to take a zeppelin to Undercity is niiiiiiiice. Even though it sucks having to earn faction with your own side.

timewaster 06-20-05 10:30 AM

does anybody know how to check your framerate in wow?
I'm getting a new vid card this week and want to see how much of an improvement i get from it.

Groucho 06-20-05 10:42 AM

Ctrl-r

DaveNinja 06-20-05 10:43 AM

Cntl-R i think it is for framerate.

The xroad to Camp T flight path is a dream come true. Too bad i already finished all the barrens quest with a horde toon. I do remember hating that run and putting it on auto run and going to get a snack.
They should have it that you get teleported back to the battleground guy in the cities after the battle so people wont abuse/use it for travel short cuts. I know that i'll participate in battleground now. I havent since the test realm because i havent wanted to travel to ashenvale.

I finally hit the BIG 6-0 last night. Did it while killing the Fire Elemental elite to finish the Zelda quest. Now I'm going through and deleting quests that I've had in my book since my early 50's...except the ones that offer reward, of course. :D

Now from here on out its all about going on Raids for getting better equipment and farming so I can save up for my epic mount. I'll probably go through the game again with a Druid. I didn't experience everything WoW has to offer the first time through. Very enjoyable game.

Congrats, how long did it take you?

Grats! That's an awesome way to ding 60!

I'm 59 right now, and about 3/5 of the way into 60. I actually killed that guy last night to help a guildmate... they didn't have the item that strips his invulnerability shield, so it was a nasty fight.

Congrats. I hit 60 over the weekend myself (Friday). I was fighting some random undead in Eastern Plaguelands. Shame that nothing special happens, just another level up.

Sadly, I think the game is about over for me now...but it's been a good run.

I'll have to check my actual total played time again tonight. Checked it Friday and I was at 21 days played so its probably still right around there. I've been playing WoW since last November so it took me 7 months to get 60.....not nearly as bad as it took me 1 1/2 years to get 50 in Dark Age of Camelot.

I must say though, leveling in this game is by far easier than some other MMO's I've played. Thankfully Blizzard has Resting XP for those of us that can't be on all the time. Without it I would probably be somewhere in my early 40's right now.

How do you check time played?

DaveNinja 06-20-05 12:23 PM

Its going to take me forever to hit 60 because i keep making alts. I started a human Warlock yesterday and have him at 8. Heres my list of the guys i play:
human Mage, level 43, my main
dwarf priest, level 32 or 33
dwarf warrior, level 14 (was my IF mule til i decided i wanted to get him to level 20)
human warlock, level 8
tauren Warrior, level 26
orc shaman, level 8

Saturday night i tried out Uldaman, party was me (mage 43), my wife (paladin 43), mage 46, hi wife (paladin 38) and a warrior 45. We killed the giant lady behind the Raiders of the lost ark map room and killed the obsidian statue guy but then the troggs further on wiped us. Then the fire dwarf guy wiped us. we went back and killed him but didnt get anythign for it. Then later on troggs wiped us again and we quit (it was almost 3 am). I have Uldaman quests that are green and yellow but didnt find the things to complete them. guess i'll have to look it up before heading back. After all of that I didnt get one green item drop.

Congrats to you as well. :)

I plan on playing this game for a while, at least until I get completely bored with it. I love the fact I can play an hour or so a night and still feel like I've accomplished something. You can't do that in any other MMO, at least none that I've played. First time through I would say I explored maybe 50% of what the game has to offer. There were several big instances I still have not gone through(i.e. Black Rock Depths, Sunken Temple, Dire Maul, Scholomance). I haven't even done any PvP yet and would like to try out the new BG's. So plenty to do to keep me busy. When something better comes along(looking forward to the LoTR MMO ;) I'll play it but until then you'll find me in WoW.

Uldaman sucks hard, IMO. Actually, somebody said once "Any instance with Troggs sucks." I'll stand by that.

Groucho 06-20-05 12:53 PM

Ragefire Chasm is pretty fun (for what it is), and that's got Troggs in it.

I learned to hate Troggs due to the rapidly respawning ones in Loch Modan (it's my understanding that this has been fixed).

I agree with you. I hated that instance. Definitely will not be making a return trip there with my Druid. The ONE good thing that came out of doing it was the Sword I got from one of the quests. It had +11 to Intel and with an Orb I had that had +10 to Intel it gave me +21 which was more than what the Staff gave me that I got from Scarlet Monastery. I used it for a good 10 levels.

I'm trying to load an UI mod but it doesn't seem to work. It's called sexyui and I followed the instruction to install it to my root WoW directory but am not sure what else, if any, I need to do. Anyone have any ideas?

RoQuEr 06-21-05 02:32 AM

needs to be in interface/addons directory, not root
