Has this year been the biggest year of anticipated new releases?

I was thinking, just recently we've seen Doom 3, Fable, GTA: SA, and Halo 2. Soon we'll see Metroid Prime 2, Half-Life 2, and MGS3. That's not counting whatever came out earlier in the year.

Has there ever been this much anticipation in one year for gamers?

Will the hoopla for Half-Life 2 be bigger then Halo 2?

It's tough to argue that it isn't.

Kind of off topic, but I would think that this year has easily out-grossed previous years by leaps and bounds. The number of units sold of just GTA and Halo 2 alone are pretty impressive.

It has been pretty impressive this year. It seems that when the new batch of consoles are on the horizon that companies really start cranking out some awesome material for the current generation. I can remember having quite a few games on the back burner just because of how many great games were coming out at once in the n64/PS era, but not quite like this. I really wish I had more time for gaming right now.

Well, the pre-sales and first-week sales of Halo 2 and GTA SA have been unprecedented. While there's no doubt that the DS will sell well, I really doubt it will match the initial sales of either the GBA or the GBA SP. $150 is reasonable for what it offers, but it will probably be seen as a lot of money for a kid's hand-held system. Also since so many own a GBA SP and bought one so recently, I wouldn't be suprised if a lot of folks hold off on another purchase for now.

Next year's not gonna be too shabby either with Nintendo alone releasing The Legend of Zelda (Untitled) and Super Mario 128, plus Resident Evil 4 from Capcom.

PS2 has Kingdom Hearts II, Final Fantasy XII, and possibly Dirge of Cerebus: Final Fantasy VII.

Nothing mentioned so far is a must-have for me. It certainly doesn't compare to the anticipation of the release of the xbox and xbox live. The first system with home theater quality picture and sound. Going on live with it and playing MotoGP with 15 other people. It's going to be hard to beat that even with the xbox 2.

I used to buy a lot of games the first day they came out but lately I've been buying almost all of them off of the discount rack.

And KOTOR 2...

This latter part of this year has been gaming goodness. Thank goodness for GameRush too, so I can afford all these great games

Huh,

I believe Mario 128 is the next title in the traditional Mario series following Super Mario World and Mario 64.

I highly doubt Super Mario 128 will be coming out anytime too soon. There has been no updates in awhile.

I would expect this game as a launch title for Nintendos next system with a name change. Makes more sense.

Back on the subject.

This has been a decent season for games. Next year seems to be decent as well.

interesting that no one has mentioned Gran Turismo 4 yet...

GT4 was one of the most anticipated games of the year for me... at least, it used to be, until they dropped the online multiplayer component

This year has been an amazing year in terms of AAA titles. I just wished companies would release their games at different times so we don't get smothered with all the new games being released between now and Christmas. It also sucks for some lower profile games that are going to be drowned out by all the hype for the more anitcipated ones.

Is GT4 coming out this year?

I also forgot Leisure Suit Larry (alot of people anticipated this one), NFSU 2, THUG 2, X-Men Legends, and MK Deception among others.

Oh for sure this season has been the biggest. The market is flooded with a bunch of titles that are highly anticipated. It's really out of control, but in a good way. It's just a shame that I don't have the time and or money to play them all now, but good games for the rest of the year isn't too bad of a problem.

Pre-orders for the DS in Japan are over 2 million alone.

Leisure Suit Larry was a terrible game and felt out of place. It didnt even seem like it was part of the series.

The ones from the 80's and early 90's were much better.

I'd say 2001 was still the biggest year.

Metal Gear Solid 2, the first next-gen MGS game;

Final Fantasy X, the first next-gen Final Fantasy game;

Halo was a bigger event the first time around, it was more new back then;

Launch of the Xbox and the Gamecube;

Estimates based on preorders have it outselling the SP during the first couple weeks. I think it was in the latest EGM.

The consoles don't count since I was talking about games mostly. Otherwise I would have mentioned the PSP and DS
