Which RPG to choose...?

Hey all -

I need your input in deciding which game to get. I'm thinking about getting all three in the future, but I can only get one right now. If you had to choose, which game would you pick first and why? Help me out - I know I can count on you guys

A. Fable
B. Tales Of Symphonia
C. X-Men Legends

Thanks in advance!
:)

These are all very different. What kind of RPG do you normally like?

Their Gamerankings scores are remarkably close:

1. Xmen (Xbox version) 86.1%
2. Tales Of Symphonia 85.9%
3. Fable 85.8%

Xmen Legends is pretty sweet, and will be more enjoyable if you're an xmen fan.

Sessa17 10-18-04 10:05 AM

Definitely X-Men: Legends but I really don't consider it an RPG at all. It's really a straight foward action game.

I would choose Tales. I played and beat it and wanted more. Plus, if your looking for a game to keep you occupied for a while, It took me over 70 hours to complete it. I highly recommend this to any gamecube owner.

Tales of Symphonia for me. Just loads of fun and I was totally immersed in the game which is a first for an RPG since about the FF3 and Chrono Trigger days.

First off, both Tales and X-men Legends are on sale this week at Target for 37 or so...

Tales is the most traditional Japanese RPG, though it differs from the classic Final Fantasy turn based system in that you actually have to do button presses in combat. Fanatic RPGers swear by this game, though.

Fable is more action oriented, like Zelda, and definitely has more freedom, which is a hallmark of American/British RPGs. It is rather short, though.

And X-men Legends, though I haven't played it yet, seems to not really be an rpg at all but an action game with stats.

I'm all over the place in terms of games I like. I go from Star Wars: KOTOR to Animal Crossing to Zelda: WW to Harvest Moon.

A. I didn't realize that X-Men Legends is not really an RPG - I guess I just thought it was.
B. I really like playing turn-based RPGs(?) on the GBA - Fire Emblem, Advance Wars, Tactics Ogre - is Tales somewhere along those lines, save for the combat play?
C. I've heard a lot of good things about Fable - is it somewhat of a cross between the titles I stated above?

Thanks for the input so far. Right now, I'm leaning towards Tales... can I get some more comments please? :)

Turn based RPGs?

Try Disgaea, LaPucille Tactics, or the new one, Phantom Brave (I think?)...

I loved Tales of Symphonia. Best RPG I have played in years. You really can't go wrong picking up that one.

I'm only an hr or so into fable and haven't been impressed so far. Tales, I'm about 55 hrs in so there's more value there already (based on reports of game length of fable in this forum). Tales also has a refreshing real time action combat system which actually makes random battles enjoyable (although they're not really random in the final fantasy sense since you can usually walk round them, just you usually choose not to!). Also I find myself liking the characters more than any of the Final Fantasy games, and on the whole it's just very polished.

I haven't played xman legends, but assuming it's like baldurs gate (it uses the same engine right), then i wouldn't consider it an rpg like fable and tales.

Fable has its interesting parts, but because of length issues and other lacking areas, I'd wait until a price drop for that one.

Sine X-Men and Tales are both the same price at Target this week, either of those depending on which type of game you want more right now.

fumanstan 10-18-04 09:07 PM

I'd say if you're an X-Men fan, then get Legends. Otherwise Tales.

Dragon Fly 10-18-04 11:03 PM

Yeah Disgaea is a good turn based, so is la pucelle, i hear phantom brave is a little too in depth. Isn't Growlanser coming out next month turn based as well?

fujishig 10-20-04 12:41 PM

I thought Growlanser was traditional RPG, and it's sister game Langrisser (Warsong on Genesis, same character designer) was a strategy RPG...

ceeece 10-20-04 12:55 PM

Lord of the Rings: The Third Age is coming out Nov. 2. Just thought I would throw that in there in case you are a LOTR fan.

edit: it is turn based.

Easy.

Tales of Symphonia
