Retro Game Challenge #12 (10/18-10/24)

Week 12 is over!
The Rules:
To enter, you just play one of the games and post a screenshot (F12 key in MAME) with your score.
The deadline to post your high scores will be Sunday 11:59 PM Eastern US time.
When you post a high score, make sure to pick a new game to play by Monday. The sooner the better.
The game should be at least 10 years old and one we haven't played before.
Please don't use continues, savestates or 5 year old Polaroids for any scores you submit.
So far we have only been using MAME to play the games, but that can change, if the winner so chooses.
I am going to host the current ROMs and list of all the past winners and high scores here.
New to MAME? Read the tutorials

The Games:
(click the titles for info and how to play)

Bomber Man (Japan) - Winning Score: D300 156800

Karate Champ (US) - Winning Score: devilshalo 85700

Tube-It - Winning Score: D300 71010

The Prize:
Whoever gets the high score for one of the games picks the next game that replaces it, so we should always have 3 to choose from. You also get your name engraved permanently etched onto this eye catching trophy with a genuine Sharpie!

This Week's Winners:

Copied D300's tips over here for convenience

For Tube-It -

Hold down the button to move blocks left or right to empty spaces.
You can tell we're into the real wacked out games when there's no picture of a cabinet found on the internet. For future reference, if you want to play a console game (devilshalo ) if you say something early enough we could probably play the console version.

To clarify: We are playing Bomber Man (Japan) because devilshalo didn't say Bomber Man World. Don't be like D300 and play the wrong version. We're playing this one:

You have to play Normal Mode

ok I tried Tube-It. That game's hard, but I think I did ok for my first time.

I didn't know there was a difference. I just remember playing Bomber Man in the arcade. (And it seemed slightly different). :shrugs:

You must've meant Bomber Man World, but it's too late now They're virtually the same anyway except for the level and character designs.

I always stunk at this game at the 7-11. It's good to know that I still do.

Devilshalo, Mrs. Mordred wanted me to let you know that she didn't give up on Rainbow Island. Her final high score was 1,060,000 on level 12, without getting the money bags. For some reason she was never able to get them after Tuesday... neither of us had any clue why. On an unrelated note we both go into epileptic seizures whenever we hear "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" now.

That's why people should post their screenshots if they got the high score or not 1,060,000 is nothing to sneeze at

Mrs. Mordred says, "Here it is":

She's also very sad that she couldn't do better
On the bright side, this was the first time she'd ever heard of the game!

I never heard of it either and got hooked. I made it to the clown level. Man, it's friggin' hard.

What's with your weird screenshots? Your Rainbow Islands ones had the black border around them too. Fix it!

Try the F12 key next time. It saves a screenshot in the snap folder.

Here's a shrug smiley for you too

I just quit this game with my wife and 2 year old son. He was Warrior, I was Wizard, and my wife was Valkyrie. He just learned how to use the joystick today. I'm a proud father I know a 2 year old shouldn't be playing video games, at least he learned some new words today - Potion, Treasure and Exit.

Keyed,

How do you exit level 8? We had to stall and wait for the exits to appear.

Could you describe the level, because from 7 on they're random. Also, exits and paths to it are changed on a couple of levels.

It's this level where this section gets cleared out, but I can't figure out how to get to the other sections. The trap to make walls disappear didn't help. Transporting just takes me to the same section.

I could adopt you so you can play Elf. Oh wait, you hate Gauntlet and the games that I play. Forget it then.

You posted this at 1:54AM! Your son should be in bed
Should I be ashamed that your 2 year old son destroyed my Gauntlet high score?

His bedtime is 2:00 AM. If you started with 99,000 health, I'm sure you could beat his score.

You have to first set off the trap at the top of the level. That will make the bottom half of the wall around the teleporter on the left disappear. Then, just use the teleporter to bounce the the other section. Try holding down the down arrow when you hit the teleporter.

Thanks, trying to get a 2 year old to stall and not touch the joystick and buttons is impossible.

I'm confused. Are we playing Gauntlet again? Why is my Tube-It score still up there? I've only played it once.
