What video game has the best ending??
This is an aspect that in my opinion is lacking in today's video games. I believe it is due to games nowadays having such great graphics and cinematics throughout the game. If you remember back in the old days....if you wanted cinematics they usually didn't happen till the end of the game...so it was something that you really looked forward to. There was just something special about those 8-bit NES endings....it might just be because I grew up on Nintendo. Your thoughts and picks??

I liked Zelda: A Link to the Past and Ocarina of Time's ending. It meant your huge quest was over and you got to see the people who helped you and that you helped one last time.

Final Fantasy II. The length and amount of closure in this ending is pretty large even today.. back in 1991 it was just jaw-dropping.
Final Fantasy III, not as strong of a closure, but deserves mention for the amazing eleven minute reprise of every character's theme in the game. No game has ever come close to achieving what this game did with its soundtrack and it's a decade old.

I've finished a lot of games over the years, but I can't really think of any endings that really stood out for me. I'm always pleased to get to the end, but I just can't remember ever feeling rewarded by the ending.

The old Sierra 'Quest' games always had great endings. My favorite, I think, was Space Quest III where they get pulled into 'our' universe, crashlanding in front of Sierra On-Line headquarters. And who could keep from crying when Sonny proposed to ex-whore Marie at the end of Police Quest 2.

Halo's ending for sheer fun, but i've also always been partial to the Zone of Enders ending, it just broke the cliche mold. You see main bad guy behind everything when all the sudden your suit tells you to run for it. And that is how the game ends. You just don't see that often.
Hell I almost forgot Knights of the Old Republics darkside ending.

Awesome story throughout, with an unexpected ending that I won't spoil for you. If you haven't played this game yet, I highly recommend it. It's probably pretty cheap by now.

Oops! I accidentally posted this in the old thread.
I played the last part of that game three times in a row and I still don't like the ending. And I don't mean the cliffhanger after the end credits. That was of very little interest to me since
The ending just felt rushed to me. That and the lame final boss really killed it for me. Otherwise, the game is fantastic.
As for great endings, I agree on FFVI, FFX, and PoP:SOT. The last was a great example of a simple ending that still managed to be extremely cool. Here's hoping the sequel does not disappoint even though Jordan Mechner is not involved in it.

So...it's been 8 years since this was posted...lots of great games with great endings.
What games have your favorite endings (spoiler tags please)?
Mine have to be RedDead Redemption and Batman: Arkham City.

For all the hundreds of games I've played I can't recall a single ending that was memorable. The Warthog run in Halo is amazing but that's not the ending, that's the last level. If we're talking Halo, the ending of Reach was solid.
The twist in Bioshock was also amazing and probably where the game should have ended, but alas, also not the ending.
Super Mario 2 is memorable, but "best?" Hardly.

I thought the ending of Gears Of War 3 was pretty satisfying.

Re: What video game has the best ending??
Nier has one of the best endings I've ever experienced in a videogame. And after you finish it, you get to play through again with a twist on the story and an entirely new, incredibly emotional ending.
