I loved the end of Eternal Darkness. You had to finish it 3 times with the different elements to get the true ending.

I was going to say Bad Dudes but someone else already mentioned it. That game is the baddest motherfucking game of all time. "Are you a bad enough dude to save the President?" Of course I am, and then he invites me to go out and have a burger with him. Nothing, absolutely nothing, is more badass than that.
Super Mario Bros may not have a great ending, but it certainly was memorable. It was the first game I can recall that ever even had an ending. I don't recall any Atari 2600 games ever ending, but rather just being on an infinite loop if you got to the end it would just cycle back to the beginning. So I just assumed Super Mario Bros was going to be the same. Every castle was the same old "the princess is in another castle" and I thought there never would be a princess and it would just keep going forever. Then I got to the eighth castle, and OMFG its the motherfucking princess!!! Biggest shocking twist ever that just absolutely blew my 7 year old mind!!

Nowadays you have to go out of your way to make a memorable ending, back in the NES era, all you had to do was reveal your hero was female
Also, I didn't really like the game but Shadow of the Colossus had a solid ending.

We don't get a lot of good endings these days. Maybe it's because of the movie-length credits, that adding a lengthy ending would make it seem interminable. Also, I'm sure it doesn't help that most games are made to be "sequel-ready," so they don't want a definite conclusion.

I haven't played the original Nier, but after re-playing Nier: Automata (specifically, up to endings C and D/E), I can't recommend the newer game enough. Sure it came out 3 years ago, but it's well worth the time and effort to play it for the narrative alone. My biggest complaint, minor as it is, is the invisible walls. They get old real fast, but luckily they aren't a deal breaker, and you just kind of get used to the fact that you can't go certain places or jump over certain rocks/hills/etc. Anyway, this game is legitimately great, IMO.
My recommendation for anyone considering jumping into it this late in the game: Do the A-B-C route first. Don't think of it as 3 playthroughs as much as 3 acts, with A being the longest. But C is worth it, and you can easily get the D/E alternates by replaying the final sequence.
I liked it the first time, but I loved it this time. And it makes me want to give Nier (and the Drakengard games) a shot, even though I know it's very detached from this game in many ways.

I always liked the end of Ninja Warriors where you neet the final boss and it turns out he is a wimpy little guy who had a revolver. He shoots 6 times, which csn be easily evaded or blocked and then starts pleading and begging for his life. Fun to take the time to kill him after.
I also liked the end of Half Life where the GMan would give you the two options. If you go against him... well get ready for the fight of your life.
