Retro Game Challenge #11 (10/11-10/17)

Week 11 is over!
The Rules:
To enter, you just play one of the games and post a screenshot (F12 key in MAME) with your score.
The deadline to post your high scores will be Sunday 11:59 PM Eastern US time.
When you post a high score, make sure to pick a new game to play by Monday. The sooner the better.
The game should be at least 10 years old and one we haven't played before.
Please don't use continues, savestates or 5 year old Polaroids for any scores you submit.
So far we have only been using MAME to play the games, but that can change, if the winner so chooses.
I am going to host the current ROMs and list of all the past winners and high scores here.

The Games:
(click the titles for info and how to play)

Gauntlet (rev 14) - Winning Score: keyed 36589

Rainbow Islands (new version) - Winning Score: devilshalo 1213580

Tetris (set 1)- Winning Score: D300 222407

The Prize:
Whoever gets the high score for one of the games picks the next game that replaces it, so we should always have 3 to choose from. You also get your name engraved permanently etched onto this eye catching trophy with a genuine Sharpie!

This Week's Winners:

Just posting to say start on the "hard" level. It skips you to level 7 with more points than you could get by starting on level 1.

Here is my contribution for the week.

On a side note, be careful when you hit "5" for more credits. Each time you hit it, you start with more health. It's 700 pts per "quarter."

I'd appreciate any tips on how to beat that thing. I lost at least 3 lives there.

I think the way to do it is to shoot as many rainbows above it as you can then break them so they fall on top of it.

Ok Week 11 is over. I win in a sweep! I'll start a new thread for week 12 in a second here. We will play Moonwalker, Robby Roto and one of those naked Mahjong games

Slow start today. What's with you people? You got jobs or something? For the uninitiated and humor impaired, week 11 isn't over til next Sunday night. My scores have never stayed up this long Must be D300's fault.

Your sweep didn't last very long . I haven't played any games yet, been trying to set up this MameWah frontend for all my emulators.

If I had a MAME cabinet I'd use 3d Arcade

I haven't tried it since it first came out and was called Emulaxian. Glad they changed the name Kind of a pain to set up, but it looks really cool.

I just spent a couple of hours setting up MameWah, and now you show me something else. I'll check it out, but so far I'm happy with MameWah.

Actually 3d Arcade wasn't as hard to set up as I remember. Probably because I already had all the screenshots and marquees. That pretty much took care of the basics, but it also has a couple hundred 3 models of specific arcade cabinets to download.

Ohhh.. ColecoVision.. I loved that system.... I spent countless hours playing Miner 49er and other games.

I miss those days.

Go download MESS. It's the console version of MAME. It emulates 400 computers and consoles. Not all of them work, but most of the old popular ones like Coleco run great. It's a little harder to hunt everything down for MESS, but Coleco roms are pretty easy to find with Google.

This is a score from Mrs. Mordred:

It's better than those other crappy screen shots.

Mrs. Mordred was playing and I had to stand over the computer and hit F12 everytime she died because I can't tell how many lives are remaining.

Just see how many rainbows are left in the bottom left hand corner.

If you want a good screenshot it's easier to just record an inp file. Then you can play the game back and you'll know when the last death is coming up. And for the old games we are playing hitting F10 will speed it up quite a bit so you can fast forward to the end.

Granted I haven't paid much attention but it always seemed to me that that was an indication of how many rainbows you shot out. Guess i was wrong
