Re: Doom 3: It sucks
Originally posted by DVD Polizei I thought I would never say this about an ID game, but this game is really a HalfLife clone, and the only saving grace is the graphics--which will be matched and overtaken by HL2. I would have rejoiced if they came out with another shooter like their other games, and I would have even dealt with less-than graphics. But after playing this game for a few hours, it got way too boring. I felt like I was playing HalfLife all over again. The plot was way too typical. Scientific experiments gone awry, everyone dies from their monster experimentation, mutants abound, and you are left to save the world. The beginning of the game is just retarded. You're talking to people and even look for a PDA...wtf? A much better beginning would have been to just drop you on the planet Mars, a little ammo, and no idea of what to do until you start progressing through the levels. [/B] Uh, from what I recall, this is pretty much the story of Doom, which predates HL substantially, so who's the clone? I think the PDA might have been copied from System Shock 2, and I find it a little silly as well, but a lot of people like that sort of thing. |
The only problem I have with it, aside from the fact that it isn't a very good game, is just how many fat guy janitors did they feel the need to hire? And, what the heck are they all doing hiding behind all those false walls? :D

Warcraft 3 had a MSRP of $60 when it first came out... then it eventually dropped in price after time. I expect the same from Doom 3. People just have to pay a premium if they want the game right away... either that, or look for deals.

AGuyNamedMike,
Well I suppose this could be the case (but I'm sure we have other games played on 5.25" floppy disks which had the same plots), but which company finally got their act together to produce a killer game: Sierra Studios. ID sat on their heineys for how long? 10 years? More? ID made some other great games, but they just came to the party a little late in this case. Yes, they may have originally crafted the mad scientist and monsters thing, but many other software companies have taken that plot and made some awesome games. If anything, I think Doom 3 became a video card promotion. The younger generation of Doomers love Doom 3. I can tell by reading the forums. But some of the old school Doomers, aren't too impressed by it and have made the same claims as I have. Oh well. I'm installing Final Doom. :) |
I just got the game today ($30.00 delivered on Ebay) and if I would have paid the full price for this I would have been unhappy. I have just played for an hour and a half and it's the same darn thing over and over and over. Anybody let me in where I can find the PDA?
|
I just want to be sure here. You played for an hour and a half and did not pick up your PDA?
It's at the beginning, you will speak with a "secretary" marine who will give it to you. |

There is one I need to open a door and the little hint box gave me a name and I have run around the whole level and did not find anything. |
Here are some codes to make your Dooming less...dooming. :hscratch:

A little repetative...BUT quite scary, especially in the Enpro Plant section when you a woman's voice "help me" and you go in to see her, scared the hell out of me. I tend to play in the evening with the lights off, so that makes it more fun
|
Well, I don't think it's worth full price either. I'd ebay it, but I'm hoping some decent mods come out sooner or later.
I loved it at first, but started getting annoyed with the repetitiveness in the Alpha Labs. By the Delta labs I was pulling my hair out in boredom. I skipped down to HELL, which was an interesting level. Why have only 1 level in HELL? Did we really need 50 levels of Cramped Marine Base Corridors? The levels after HELL weren't able to keep my attention either. I hope Half Life 2 isn't so disappointing. |
The audio work in D3 is awesome. It really should have been re-tooled as a horror game, as the ambience sends chills down the spine on several occasions. The problem is that the game play is ridiculously repetitive. I wanted this game to be over days before I finally finished it, and I will never replay it. The "ground-breaking" graphics are nice, but nothing I wasn't expecting at this point in game history.

Boring plot with really bad pacing. Awful level design. Ridiculously outdated multiplayer support (it's a step back from Quake 1, for god's sake.) No replay value. - David Stein |
id makes great engines, not so great games.
I can't wait to see Quake 4. Raven is doing that and they have a great track record. |
I agree that the whole jumping out at you thing gets very old. Every once in a while is OK but if you're gonna make a stragith shooter, make it like the previous Dooms and let us run around and blow shit to hell.

After playing Riddick, it's difficult to get into games where you have no body or presence in the world. Not even casting a shadow. Even today, new games come out and they can't even give you your reflection in a mirror. Weak. In Riddick, you could see your own body if you look down and you cast a shadow as well - it bumped up immersion for me by 25% at least. It should be a new standard for the FPS genre.

Finally beat the game today... Walk in to a room, get ambushed, kill all the monsters. Walk in to another room, get ambushed, kill all the monsters. Walk in to another room...
The Audio and graphics were all top notch, and playing with the lights off and the sound turned up really helped game play; but for suck sake they needed different variations of levels, being underground the whole time really started to get boring. |
I just finished this one tonight. Overall, while I wouldn't say it sucked, it just wasn't fun in the same way that HL2 was. I agree that the closed in environment worked at first but then it just got old. All you did was see a badie and either back up and fire or wait until they fired then sidestep and fire. Graphics were nice but couldn't really see them half the time. I was glad that there were some big bosses which HL2 lacked, but overall the game play was just not there. Weapon selection was basically whatever you had the most ammo for and use the big guns on the big bosses. The audio really made this game better than average except for the terrible weapon sounds. Bottom line is that I thought the game was very creepy and even scary at times. Great visuals and sounds. Played through for hours at a time to see what was next, but the whole time I was just wanting it to be over. Not likely to ever play again but it was worth playing once. Grade B

BeanDip Says "same thing over and over"
I think the game companies are at a shortage for young new talent with new ideas. Most of us give or take 5 - 7 years are part of the Nintendo generation. I had the first doom and man it was great, but doom 3 after games like halo and unreal tournament well I think it sucks. If you're going to make a first person shooter now days follow the halo band wagon. I won't lie I was pissed by halo 2's ending, but the multiplayer makes up for it. And I haven't even started on half life 2 yet, though for the pc it is probably going to be one of the better ones in the last few years. Halo for the pc added great expansion on the multiplayer but in general the company that did the port screwed up the game from the Xbox version. I guess I really don't have any point to this post, but you have to look at the numbers and how long some of us waited to pick these games up after we saw them for the first time at E3 or on the TV etc. And then look at the real game that we're playing now. Halo rewrote the book on FPS and the Warcraft series wrote the book on RTS and now world of Warcraft kick a hole through the door in the online world. I guess it is all a matter of perception, but one thing I’m sure we all agree on paying $60 for a game is crap, hell I’d buy a new game every freaking week if they were $20. Oh well BeanDip, is going back the Halo2 Clan thread.

Is anyone going to grab this title for xbox? The multi-player could be fun.

I'm leaning toward the rental...I have halo2 and ghost recon2 and have not put in nearly enough hours there....practically nothing. Unfortunately they hit during the holidays and I have not gotten back into gaming..so it's a rental...and by accounts it seems that should be enough. ..plus I want to play along with my buddy on live.
