NEO GEO - What is it's place in Videogame History ?
 

I remember the Neo Geo console , was out around the time of the Sega Megadrive/Genesis and Supernintendo, that is right isn't it ?

The Neo Geo wasn't available readily here in Australia but you could buy it from importers and one place had it for rent. Boy was it expensive. The rolls royce of consoles in it's day, i remember individual games costing as much as the other consoles did! But the console had perfect arcade ports of its games if i remember correctly.

Neo Geo games definitely centred around it's many 2D fighters series like Fatal Fury, Samurai Shodown, World Heros, King of Fighters etc

I recently got hold of a Mame dvd for the Xbox with all Neo geo games on it and boy they still rock

was the Neo Geo way ahead of it's time ?

It will definitely go down as the biggest cartridges ever, those things were huge. I still have mine in the garage, I got 2 on clearance at Macy's for $50 each and sold one to a used game store for $99, $1 for a Neo Geo was a steal. This was way back in 91 or something like that. I have about 6 games for it too.

Neo Geo and 10 games

My last roommate had a Neo Geo arcade machine. Was much fun.. much fun indeed. Best game on the system had to be Twinkle Star Sprites. 2 player versus shooting. Mmm..

I would say that Neo Geo had very little impact on gaming overall, except maybe shaping the fighting game genre.

The Neo Geo had a HUGE impact on arcade gaming.

Wasn't the "gimmick" with the home console that you could have a memory card type of dealie and effectively save your game while at an arcade machine and continue playing from home?

Yes, they did have that but I can't think of a single game that would've used it.. they stopped making the cabinets with the card slots very early on. I can't think of many games that would save anything more than high scores..

True, but I don't think it had much impact on gaming as a whole as arcade gaming is dead and there really aren't even that many arcade type games on the consoles anymore, fighting games aside (and there's not many good ones of those that are just ports, re-releases and spinoffs/sequels).

You guys are forgetting about the NeoGeo Pocket! I still have mine...in pristine condition. That sucker has some of the best fighting games on a portable system...the GBASP can't even touch it. The control stick on it was the greatest one on a portable system...geez, now I have to break that thing out and play...Samurai Showdown 2 it is!

Cardfighters Clash on the NGPC is one of the greatest games *ever* (at least on a portable) - I played some more of it last night. Very addictive stuff.

I thought he idea behind the Neo Geo was that it was that you were getting the EXACT same game as the arcade version. The arcade Neo Geo systems were nothing more than specialized Neo Geo systems. I remember playing the original Bust a Move many times on a Neo Geo arcade system.

So since arcade gaming is dead, I guess, Pacman, Galaga, Centipede, Mortal Kombat, (fill in name of your favorite arcade games), did not have much of an impact on gaming? I'm not arguing one way or the other for the Neo Geo, I just don't think your point holds water.

i think the Neo Geo at the very least showed the big boys that you could get arcade quality action into the home

At the time, rival consoles had games a fair bit short of arcade quality

Somewhat debatable, but I was talking about the consoles, since that's what Original Desmond was talking about, and that's what the pictures were of.

Well, sure, you could put arcade games in the home, if you designed a system with no regard to making it affordable for consumers. Those rival consoles and their games were designed to be produced and sold on a mass market level, and so there were limitations in the technology they could use while still being affordable.

I love the Neo Geo.

Maybe loved is the better verb tense.

I got my first one back in 1992. And collected them till 2002. At one point, I had over 100 games. I just love the big sized carts and the arcade perfect 'ports'.

The graphics and sound capabilities were way ahead of its time (when it first came out). And its longetivity is unmatched (Gameboy come the closest but it had many hardware updates), I am still amazed that the last new official game just got released last month (Samurai Shodown V special).

But I can't keep up with the "collector's" market, the prices on some of the games are insane and NG's days are frankly too outdated (even if games like Metal Slug 3 is as fun as any 3D action game).

NG is truly a unique system and its place in the videogame history will never be repeated, despite the fact that NG will always appeal to a very very small audience because of its price, and size!
