Nice Link. I never thought about recreating a title screen, but that'd be really cool. I'm thinking I want to take on the Zelda LTTP title screen.

I like how you put the squashed Goomba right next to the normal one, sdcrym.

I haven't measured the Samus, but comparing it to the dollar, I'd say it's about 8-9 inches tall.

I iron both sides to make bonds stronger. Also, the tub of Perler beads came with more colors than the tub of Hama beads, but I've been using both brands. There's not much a size difference, but you have to be extra thorough when you first iron to make sure that the shorter Hama beads melt and stick to the taller Perler ones.

Here's a pretty decent LTTP title screen shot at this link ... looked quite possible when I zoomed in w/ photoshop. I may try my hand at a simpler NES title screen... TLOZ perhaps.

Edit to add:
The perler site actually has 3D projects for this stuff! Not video game related, but really complicated looking!

I was actually planning on making a mario jumping sprite kind of in the air between the two, to give the impression of stomping on the first and bouncing over to the next. I won't be able to do it until I get some more beads and a bigger board, though.

This bead art is cool! I esp. like the Dragon Warrior slime and the Black Mage. :D

I will have to pick up some of these beads. And we needed to buy an iron anyway :D Perhaps in the next few weeks. Awesome nerd decoration!

I've got one I want to do that's 64x96 pixels.. we're gonna need a bigger boat.

LOL, I remember doing these things like ten or so years ago. I like the Link one holding the sword up, nice work.

No Dvdtalk Logo? ;)

PixyJunket 08-18-04 02:28 PM

Wow.. that's impressive!!

What set did you buy to get such a good variety of colors for the shading on the SNES stuff?

I haven't gotten anything other than the Butterfly Girls kit so far so I'm stuck with a limited set of colors for now. I've only been able to do 2 a night with how busy I've been.. but this weekend after we get my girlfriend moved into her dorm, we're going to make a bunch. Actually, she's mad I started without her!

beefjerky 08-18-04 02:50 PM

I'm using both Perler and Hama beads, but there are a lot more colors in the Perlers. Some of the shading is so subtle that you can't even really tell. You can't even see it in the photos.

Here's a sprite for you guys:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3..._All_Stars.png

It's the title screen from Mario All Stars with the background removed. Too bad some of the characters are covering each other up though, I suppose you could just do the ones standing in the front.

QuAcKeR 08-18-04 05:33 PM

very nice challenge there... I think that by removing the spiny from the center of the image it could be done in two sections and attached at the end. I'd need about 20 of the 29x29 boards though... to do the bowser/princess/mario/goomba/bob-omb group. The pidgit could be done easily enough and displayed seperately.

edit: doh! the pidgit is 40x30. Man I gotta get more boards.

beefjerky 08-19-04 02:26 AM

I've been thinking about doing a big detailed sprite like this guy: http://www.farazansari.com/beads/andybogarddone.jpg

Or something like the sprite above, but it's so much work.

So has anyone found a link online yet where we could get larger boards? So far the largest i can find at my Crafts 2000 is something like 15x15 and they have decent side edging so i can't combine multiple boards.

Go to Hobby Lobby and get the Butterfly Girls set. It comes with three 29x29 boards that connect together and a couple thousand beads.

So is anyone still making these things? I started again trying to hunt down those bigger boards Pixy mentioned and didn't find the set on the Hobby Lobby site. Also the links to the pics of characters to make early in the thread are all dead - anyone have a place to find new maps of characters and the like?

Silly Burrito 07-21-06 04:57 PM

Try Thinkgeek.com for the PixelBlocks. I made a Mario head, and then haven't really used it since.

xmiyux 07-21-06 05:10 PM

I'm using the perler beads so i can make some video game designs for Christmas gifts for my nerdy friends and some decorations for my classroom. The pixel blocks are cool but can't be given away as cheaply.
