Nice find! Gives a good idea of the size of the system. That screen is amazing!

young 08-11-04 11:16 AM

pretty cool. i wish it had some sort of screen protection though.

remjim 08-11-04 11:28 AM

Nice one goLUCKY!

I really love the design of the PSP. It's not as bulky as I thought it might be.

I wonder if the UMDs are inserted in those cases into the PSP or if ou have to remove the casing.

Were those actual gameplay videos of GT4 for the PSP or just in game cinemas?

joshd2012 08-11-04 11:32 AM

1. This video is a couple days old, six actually.

2. The UMD disc never leaves the UMD case.

3. GT4 is not playable in any form on PSP as of yet. Whatever you saw was just movies.

_tony_ 08-11-04 12:52 PM

dope.

i think i read somewhere that GT4 for the PSP is gonna be a near perfect port of the PS2 version.

remjim 08-11-04 01:08 PM

Thanks for the info joshd2012.

How is that possible? The PSP's power lies somewhere between the PS1 and PS2. If this is true, then the chances of a perfect port would be impossible.

tonytapez said "near perfect" I bet they could make the gameplay identical. I wonder what it will be able to do besides play games.

It will be a perfect port. The PSP is actually a little bit more powerful than the PS2 in someways. The PS2 processor runs at 298 MHz while the PSP will run at 333MHz. The memory is also the same. The only thing that will happen, is that either some features will be left out of the game to save space (a 4.7GB DVD vs the 1.8GB UMD) or it will come as two UMDs, similar to previous versions coming with one for Arcade and one for Simulation.

Also, the use of the L2 and R2 button will have to be reasigned as the PSP only has one set of shoulder buttons.

The Franchise 08-11-04 03:27 PM

Also because the PSP has a smaller screen size they can skimp a bit on the detail since you wont be projecting the picture on a large TV (similar to how a small 9" TV can somtimes look really sharp but a 56" TV can look grainy). The overall effect will look PS2 quality though since you wont be able to notice on the small screen.

PalmerJoss 08-11-04 03:29 PM

Wow. Very impressive. It actually looks better than I had hoped. Looking forward to seeing more games in action.

Looks nice. That car demo was just a movie though (dvd on psp) it looked like.

It looks like that thing would suck batteries for breakfast, have they said how long they will last?

IF it uses a full DVD, 90% of that will be video and uncompressed audio. Consider the smaller screen size and small native speaker on the PSP, I don't think there'll be any problem sizing it down to a single UMD.

They haven't.. they're probably trying to find a way to make it work or just holding off the news as long as they can. "Reports" are indicating 2-3 hours for movie and gameplay. 8-10 for audio only. But that's all unconfirmed, of course.

That wasn't Gran Turismo?

Darn, it uses the Memory Stick Duo. I was hoping I could use one of the memory sticks I already have, but thats a minor thing.

I'm liking what I'm seeing from this handheld more and more. If Sony makes it affordable and the battery life for games is 10 hours this will probably destroy the Nintendo DS sales wise.

GT4 that is near PS2 quality versus Mario 64 that is near N64 quality is going to be an easy victory for Sony with the average customer looking for a new portable device unless the price difference is huge.

I just hope Sony builds these things a lot better than the original Playstation and PS2. My MD Walkman has been pretty much indestructible so I can only hope their portable gaming devices are designed as well as other Sony portables. That screen is going to f'ed up pretty fast though.

That is one sweeting looking video and those are some amazing pics. My wife really wanted to get a GBA some time ago and I told her she could if she wanted to but I would wait for a PSP.

I like Nintendo and most of the stuff they put out but I'd drawn to the PSP by a great force. :)

Problem: Nintendo DS will destroy it in price.
Problem: Nintendo DS will destroy it in battery life.

I'll probably get one, but it will suck to have to play games tethered to a wall outlet.

Problem: Nintendo DS will destroy it in innovative games.

Not that that will move more units or get the casual gamer to get a DS.

I think you are right. If the thing is $300 there is no way I buy one right away. I honestly can't see it being close to the DS price unless Sony is really willing to lose a bundle on hardware.

Heck, I'm not thrilled with the DS being $179. No way I pay near double for a PSP.

The battery life is the other issue. Some are claiming 10 hours which would be pretty good considering the power of the system. If it ends up being half that in reality it will be pointless to buy one for me.

Problem: Teens and adults mostly don't relate to <strike>Kid</strike>nintendo. PSP will relate to them. Plus they will be footing the bill, mommy and daddy don't need to buy it for them.

But this concept is base on the surge of SONY over Nintendo.

Watch the console-bashing... just call it Nintendo. - Static

Fok 08-12-04 03:38 AM

Sweet, probably going to cost a lot when it first comes out.

joshd2012 08-12-04 09:52 AM

Also remember, that Sony has already said they will take a loss on the unit when it first gets released. Nintendo has always claimed to never take a loss on a console or portable. The prices could be closer than you think.
