Who is "Justin Bailey"? (Metroid reference?)

Gameskin's has this t-shirt for sale, what does it mean?

Jeremy517 06-08-04 09:02 AM

"Justin Bailey" (followed by all dashes) was a password for the original Metroid that gave you all upgrades, but made Samus not have a space suit on. Contrary to popular belief, Justin Bailey is not a real person.

Goldberg74 06-08-04 09:21 AM

Thanks Jeremy517.

I thought for sure that Pixy would answer first. ;)

D_N_G 06-08-04 09:50 AM

Justin Bailey is also said to actually mean

Just In Bailey - Bailey being an Australian word for swimsuit, where as when the code is input Samus is running around Just In her skivvies (looks like undies or a swimsuit)

PixyJunket 06-08-04 10:05 AM

All crap, CRAP CRAP CRAP!

JUSTIN BAILEY is just one of over thousands of real word passwords that happen to work in the original Metroid, it has NO significance to anything EVER, never did and never will.

Bailey does NOT mean swimsuit in ANY language.

The code was printed in Nintendo Power (I think) years ago and has grown into some stupid myth. Anybody who actually thinks this password is the way to play as Samus without her suit obviously (VERY obviously, I might add) never actually beat the game.

It's only a coincidence blown WAY out of proportion.

Agreed. But it was a workable code and did put you pretty far into the game.

Cool shirt.

You seem pretty confident:

That's just the first few sites that popped up when I Googled "Justin Bailey Metroid" Haven't recently played the game, but all these sites say that it does put her in a swimsuit and a few talk about the Aussie meaning.
That's a lot of people posting passwords and info that have never beaten the game.

Goldberg74 06-08-04 10:38 AM

Enhance your calm PixyJunket.

The real question is will anyone buy the shirt?

Are you saying that you don't think that the code lets you play without a suit, or are you just debating the Australian swimsuit part?

Yes I know what happens when you beat the game, but I also guarantee you that the code does in fact let you play without the suit (and with all weapons). Try it.

(There are rumors that the code was removed from the Classic Series re-release. I can neither confirm nor deny this.)

I am 100% correct.

The password works, and the password does enable you to play without the suit. However, I can give you a few thousand passwords that allow you to play without the suit, JUSTIN BAILEY is just one of them, and it holds no significance. The "bailey = swimsuit" thing is a fabrication created by Metroid fans desperate to believe that the JUSTIN BAILEY is not just a random password (which it is).

warcp 06-08-04 11:02 AM

hmmmmm. Has Pixy "VERY obviously" not beaten the game??

I'm arguing that this is not the "de facto" method to achieve this; it is simply a randomly generated password among thousands that happen to have this feature of the game enabled.

OK. We're in agreement then.

You seem to directly be saying that this password does not make Samus lose her suit, aren't you? That's all I'm saying.

Try this (use a zero in bomb):
Code:

some-1 set-up
us-the B0MB11

ill try that when i get home. isnt that a zero wing mistranslation reference? how does that work in a game from 1986?

Which again goes back to the point that "Justin Bailey" wasn't an intentional code; it was just one code out of many that looked like real words.

flair 06-08-04 02:41 PM

I was just reading up on Kid Icarus when I saw this thread and found the old password schemes to be pretty interesting.

No passwords that spell something out are intentional to my
knowledge, as the only thing required for a password to be
accepted is the checksum. Kid Icarus accepts 64^22 out of
64^24 posssible passwords - that's a lot. Just punch in
whatever text you want, and as long as the last two characters
(the checksum) are correct, the password is accepted. There
are no hardcoded passwords that I know of either, unlike the
single hardcoded one in Metroid (NARPASSWORD followed by five
zeros and any characters after that).

I think I remember reading that NAR where initials for the guy who did the codes, and then password is obvious. If the Metroid code is similar to the Kid Icarus code, Justin Bailey could easily be a coincidence.

Breakfast with Girls 06-08-04 02:52 PM

Well, it works because Metroid codes work like Mega Man codes. The some-1 set-up us-the B0MB11 code gives you no suit and you have the Screw Attack, just about full missiles, the Wave Beam, and maybe a couple other things. It also starts you out in a different location.
