X-Box, GC, GBA... What should I get?

This is a stupid topic for a thread but I have a bunch of BEst Buy coupons that will expire and I need to get something. I have a PS2 and have been thinking about getting something else, even though I don't play much these days. Still, it would be free or close to it. Pros and cons:

X-Box:
pros:
Halo (I'd get the Halo special edition X-Box)
Halo 2 (soon)
HD output
cons:
Don't really have room for another console

GC:
pros:
Metroid Prime
Zelda
cons:
same as X-Box

GBA:
pros:
takes no room
Metroid
various old school games like original Zelda that I'd love to replay
cons:
games not as cool as console
will cause me to play on subway instead of read or relax

Whaddya think?

(here's my TV. As you can see, there's barely room for another console. Space is at a premium.)

Hey, I think I have the same entertainment center! I'm pretty sure you can fit a gamecube in the lower left corner there. Otherwise, I'd ditch the VCR and get an XBox.

dancinns 06-04-04 10:40 AM

It all depends on what type of games you enjoy. Simply buy the system that has the games you want to play. Go to some site like gamerankings.com or ign.com and make a list of the games you'd like to play. Which ever list of games looks the best to you then go with that console.

PixyJunket 06-04-04 10:46 AM

Gamecube all the way, which also has HD output, FYI. Seriously, Zelda and Metroid alone are worth the purchase of the system. Look for the Ocarina of Time or Zelda Collector's Edition bonus disc as well. Wavebird, enough said.

you should read & relax on the subway, so don't get a GBA. I bought a GBA, thinking I'd play it on the train commute to work, but I really prefer to just take a nap or read instead.

Don't get a Xbox or Gamecube - you said yourself that you don't play much. You probably don't have time for another console.

Looking at your setup, I would use your best buy coupons to buy some speaker stands for your left & right speakers. What are they doing UNDER your TV?!?! You need better channel separation - spread them apart by buying some speaker stands.

PixyJunket: Gamecube does not have HD output, only Xbox does. Gamecube has component & progressive output, but not HD.

Oh? I thought that's what progressive was.. argh. So what exactly does progressive output do for say, Metroid Prime? I was thinking about getting a TV that would support this, but I'd like to know (or better yet, see) what the difference is.

GC, it looks like it will fit, it costs less than the X-box, and IMO it has a better game library (I have all 3 consoles plus a GBA).

mmconhea 06-04-04 12:23 PM

Cube: the first party games., more likely to fit, oh and you HAVE to play Eternal Darkness.
...and Cube has HD output (component) with 480p only (no 720p)

If you have a lot of firends that play Halo though, you may as well get the Halo bundle ( I hear you can get it for $150 at TrU)

Gil Jawetz 06-04-04 12:33 PM

Thanks for all the advice! keep it coming.

A quick note: 480p is NOT HD. It's a progressive scan format, but only 720p, 1080i (and the rare 1080p) are consumer HD formats.

It's all about da Box. :)

Gil Jawetz 06-04-04 02:27 PM

Too bad I already have a PS2 or I'd get this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...107675670&rd=1

No contest - Xbox.

Gizmo 06-04-04 02:45 PM

All 3! But seriously, where are you gonna find a Halo Xbox? I havn't seen those in stores in a long time.

Looking at that auction, the image of the PS2 system shows an RF adapter and a third party controller for the PS2. The kid had to deal with a thrid party controller AND a crappy RF adapter to play it on his TV! The graphics must have looked terrible! No wonder he was so destructive and deceptive - I would have been too, if I was forced to endure such shoddy playing conditions. :)

 I'll have to let Y2K Falcon know about that auction...

slop101 06-04-04 03:06 PM

I have all those and more, and I easily spend more time on the XBox than the rest combined.

Silkk_34 06-04-04 03:24 PM

I have all 3, but would definitely say the Gamecube gets much more play. Animal Crossing, Metroid Prime, Zelda, & Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles. All are excellent games.

Gizmo 06-04-04 03:28 PM

LOL! Classic.

The Best Buy near my house had about 15 of them on Tuesday.

Gizmo 06-04-04 03:54 PM

Wow...you sure they were full? Some are empty boxes...

Didn't check - maybe they were - but they had the price sign right above them...

edstein 06-04-04 05:44 PM

Dump the VCR and get an Xbox.

jediwicz 06-04-04 06:32 PM

GCN. Playing games like Metroid Prime, F-Zero GX, Zelda and Final Fantasy in progressive scan with a Wavebird is a feeling Xbox could NEVER duplicate.

If you like multiplayer games I'd pick up a GCN (Custo Robo, F-Zero, Kirby, Mario Golf, Mario Kart, Mario Party, Super Monkey Ball(s), Super Smash Bros and Wario Ware).

If you want a few more reasons...Animal Crossing, Eternal Darkness, Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes, Pikmin, Resident Evil(s) w/ RE4 on the way, Sonic Adventure(s), Star Wars: Rogue Squadron(s), Starfox, Super Mario Sunshine, and Viewtiful Joe.

Lethal Nemesis 06-04-04 06:48 PM

I have all 3, and I would suggest that if you already have a PS2, you should get a GC. It has a lot of fun games and it's a perfect compliment to the PS2. Xbox is an awesome system, too, and I would suggest it if you're going to play a lot of sports games. Otherwise, go with the GC.

Galanthas 06-04-04 06:56 PM

GC+GBA Player=gaming goodness and takes up less space compared to an xbox.
