Do the Ps2/Xbox/Gamecube have rpg/strategy games...

like Brigandine, Dragon Force, Ogre Battle, etc...?

I'm looking for games of this type but the newer consoles don't seem to have anything ressembling these games! I looked around but found none on the newest consoles. I did get my hands on something called Tear Ring Saga but its in bloody japanese so I cant read a thing (yes yes, I downloaded it as I'd never heard of it being released in North America).

I traded in my old games at EB and got Romance of the Three Kingdoms IX, but I was sorely disappointed as its not even close to these games and has no storyline.

Anyone have recommendations for me?

Mercury 05-17-04 08:51 PM

here's some titles...

Gameboy Advance...
Ogre Tactics
Final Fantasy Tactics
Advance wars
Golden Sun

PS2 ...
Final Fantasy X and X-2
Suikoden III
Dark Cloud II

Xbox...
Gladiator (I think this is on all three consoles)
Morrowind
Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic

GC...
Phantasy Star Online ep. I and II ( also on Xbox)
Phantasy Star Online ep. III
Skies of Arcadia Legends (Dreamcast graphics, still a great game)

I think you'll get the most bang for your buck with GBA SP or PS2. There's dozens of PS2 RPG's I cant think of right now.

For the PS2, you might want to try La Pucelle Tactics and Disgaea.

Is that Gladius you mean? It's a strategy rpg. I just bought it at Sam's Club for $12.83 for the cube, good price although I haven't had a chance to really play it.

Mercury 05-18-04 01:12 AM

Yes! It's Gladius, not gladiator. I had a brain fart. Also I can't believe I left out the games toogood mentioned.

Someday I'll get to play all these. So far I've finished FFT, FFX, SW:KOTOR, and PSO ep. I and II.

I believe Fire Emblem for the GameCube is in development.

you are correct

I had Gladius and traded it in.

Thanks for the list Mercury, but most titles do not fit in with what I wanted. The GBA games are the correct style (except Golden Sun). I am talking about turn based action where you develop your caracters, I'm thinking on getting Pucelle to try it out, but I was hoping to find one ressembling Brigandine or Ogre Battle- now those were great games.

Fire Emblem should fit your bill then. And, although you don't develop individual characters, there is Advance Wars heading to the Cube as well (unless the GC version differs from the GBA version much).

Did I mention I won't touch a Gamecube? :p

I downloaded a game called Tear Ring Saga which Nintendo sued and kept out of North America because they thought it would be too similar to Fire Emblem. Course it's Japanese only so I couldn't play it- but I wont be getting a Gamecube, I don't like Nintendo.

If you want to try something with a futuristic setting, Front Mission 4 should be out next month.

Advance Wars for GameCube looked like a 3rd person shooter from what I could tell.

Advance Wars is a turn-based strategy game. Think of chess but with more pieces, bigger field, and more options.

Well, I guess I will support previous recommendations then and say Disgaea or La Pucelle. I haven't played either but am really interested in both myself.

EDIT:
Just out of curiousity ... if you won't touch a GameCube, why did you list it as one of the systems you wanted to know if there were games for it?

milo bloom 05-18-04 03:36 PM

Remember, the PS2 is backwards compatible and there's a lot of RPGs on the PS1.

I know most of you are saying "duh" right now, but I posted this in a recommendation thread before and somebody had forgotten that and was glad I brought it up.

There are several Final Fantasy games for the PS1.

Take a look at my game collection in my sig for some ideas, most are my wife's though, so I can't give too many recommendations.

Too bad because with the Gameboy Player, all the great GBA rpg/strategy games (Ogre Tactics, Final Fantasy Tactics, Advance Wars 1&2) can be played full screen on the Gamecube. RPG/Strategy bliss!

Oh this game has some major story. But the game assumes you already know the story and the events play out as the years go by. Play Dynasty Warriors if you want to see the story shown. Or read one of the novels.

I've played and loved this series since it was on SNES/PC. Awesome game. Romance of the Three Kingdoms IX made some crazy changes that made warring similar to Dynasty Tactics.

So why did you include "Gamecube" in your subject header? How can you say you don't like Nintendo when only the GBA seems to offer the game types you profess to enjoy? -rolleyes-

Feneant 05-19-04 08:32 AM

I just put all consoles there to get a general feel for the genre. Besides, Nintendo was certain to be brought up

fujishig 05-19-04 09:10 AM

Isn't Langrisser coming out soon in America? I thought I saw a blurb in a magazine recently.

This is the long-running Japanese series, with character designs by the guy that did Plastic Little. I believe only one game was brought over and renamed Warsong, for the Genesis.

Brigandine was a great game... a little long, but what tactical strategy game isn't? That wasn't part of a larger series, was it?

Still holding my breath for them to finally release a Sakura Wars title.

I think the success of games like Advance Wars and even Disgaea means that we'll be seeing more tactical rpgs brought over. I believe there's also a bunch of turn-based military strategy games, and I heard somewhere that Shining Force was coming over as well...
