PC Gamer - June 04 - nvidia news and half-life 2 playtest

2 articles of interest... Apparently, the nv40 aka 6800 graphics card by nVidia will totally blow away anything currently out - even doubling the perfomance benchmarks of the 5950 and ATI's 9800XT. This is the biggest jump in graphics performance since 3d cards were invented I think. We're talkin 54fps in Halo with all options on highest settings... the current cards can't manage more than 29fps. I know what I'm buying this christmas.

PCG got a hands-on exclusive preview of Half-Life 2 and described some more cool stuff (including screens) not yet discussed. There's lots of information, but one tidbit that caught my attention especially was that if you started a small fire in a building, you could later find the whole place on fire. And it's unscripted - it's just an effect of the Source engine... a side-effect. If you find yourself at the grocery store or a newsstand - pick up a copy and thumb through it.

Also read in CGW that Alienware is planning to unveil a new exclusive technology at E3 that will eclipse current top-end gaming benchmarks. Wonder what that'll be.

Not sure I believe anything Nvidia says until I see benchmarks. They really screwed up their last few cards so I want proof before I'll believe that it doubles the current models.

they were pcgamer benchmarks - nvidia gave them a card and pcg ran the tests themselves.

Wow... impressive!

I'm really curious to see what the modders are going to do with this engine.

The article mentions mods too - it said that every member of the development team was already each working with a mod team as a 'mentor' role and that even after HL2 ships, they will continue to oversee these mods to fruition.

I'll see if I can't scan and post to my own webspace... not making any promises.

I don't doubt that the new cards will kick my ass until my ass falls off and I get a new ass which will also be kicked, but this really says more about the PC port of Halo than it does about the current generation of 3D cards.

Good to see they're taking an active role in the mods. That's the only reason people are still playing the original Half Life this many years after release.

It's looking good... the only thing I'm concerned about now is the whole "steam" thing for distribution.

E3 will be mighty interesting this year. I feel bad for all those who popped down the cash for graphic crads last year before the delays.

holy crap - missed the reviews drop this week... not only is the vanilla version as good, the platinum version kicks the crap out of the 6800. Wow... guess I'll be getting an ATI.

That and the X800 uses less than half the amount of power, and doesn't need 2 molex power connectors (not connected to anything else), like the 6800. Also, the X800 runs incredibly cool, after many, many hours of running it is cool to the touch.

Why did they compare the 6800 to an old ATI card? The X800 is better than the new Nvidia card in most benchmarks.

Probably because the NDA expired for the Geforce 6800 earlier. And it's a magazine... they're always slow. I'd prefer a site like Anandtech over PC Gamer anyway
