Xbox 2 Schematic
Does this look legit to you?
http://www.ati-news.de/Bilder/News/xbox2_scheme_bg.gif The 3.5 GHz seems high for this system. |
That looks like three 3.5 GHz processors, not just one. Seems highly unlikely. The 80GB maximum for the hard drive seems way too high also.
Seems unlikely, but who knows. |
It does say a 20-80 GB harddrive.
and it looks like it may be an add-on. Three CPUs would be kick-ass, but very costly, even in 2005. |
It could be a fake, according to an expert quoted in a story on XBox-Scene (originally on gamesindustry.biz):
It's not impossible that it's a Microsoft document," one expert told us this afternoon. "But some of the figures seem very suspect, and the information included on the diagram looks to me like it reflects the available information about Xbox 2 rather than being a sensible set of information to put on a document for developers." He voiced particular concerns over the fact that while the document notes "256+ Mb" of main RAM, it doesn't start what kind of RAM will be used - a vital technical point - and also noted that the CPU diagram doesn't mention that the CPUs used will be dual-core (effectively making Xbox 2 into a six processor unit), another important factor. "There's a lot of detail here about stuff you could just guess or which we already know from public announcements, like some performance information about ATI's graphics chips. And then there's some really surprising missing detail, like the twin-core architecture and a few other really crucial things which Microsoft has already talked to developers about but are missing from this diagram. I'd have to guess it was a fake," he concluded. |
It's real.
At least, thats what the general consensus is around our office. |
I thought the new Xbox wasn't going to have a hard drive though?
|
I highly doubt it. 3 dual-core processors? Come on, MS has been fighting parallel processing for years, the windows OS sucks at it.
What's next, the xbox2 is going to built based on a linux kernal? I can't wait to see what happens. I wait, yes I can. ;) |
looks fake to me.
|
most likely fake. It looks like it was drawn in MS word. Nothing for tech drawings at all.

Fake fakety fake fake.
Someone taking a microprocessors class had some free time on his/her hands me thinks! |
(3) 3GHz processors would cost how much? I think that is a little bit of an overkill, though I could be wrong. I'm going to go with fake.
|
I've been under the impression for months that this box would have 3 processors under the hood. I also heard they would be IBM CPUs rather than Intel.
|
Well, it is all but confirmed that they will be using the IBM PowerPC chipset, but 3 processors seems a bit much. A dedicated processor can do a lot; three of them can result in massive data crunching. I don't know if it is even feasible to give consumers that much power.
|
If they are three 3.5gHz processors, it's too much. If the three 3.5gHz CPUs are actually three CPU cores, the schematic is labeled incorrectly. Either way it's highly suspect.
