Capcom announces Viewtiful Joe 2 for GC, PS2

Last year, one of the most acclaimed GameCube exclusives was Capcom's cartoon-style beat-'em-up, Viewtiful Joe. Today, the publisher announced the game's sequel, Viewtiful Joe 2, will also be available for the PlayStation 2 when it is released this coming winter. Capcom also released the first images from the cel-shaded title.

Like the original, Viewtiful Joe 2 will feature a mix of 2D and 3D action. Returning are Joe, the film-geek-turned-superhero, and his girlfriend Silvia, who is now a superheroine herself. Both characters will be playable from the beginning of the game.

Besides having 40 new types of enemies, the sequel will also span several new environments, including a jungle, underground ruins, ancient Japan, snowy mountains and outer space. Joe's Six Machine will get new transformational powers that will let it turn into a racer, cannon, drill or submarine during different stages of the game. The caped hero will also receive a new VFX power, "Replay," which will let him triple the effect of attacks or power-ups.

"With new visual effects, enemies and challenges, Joe and Silvia are ready to take on an all new Viewtiful adventure," said Capcom's director of marketing, Todd Thorson. Viewtiful Joe creator Atsushi Inaba had even more to say about the game in his exclusive Q&A with GameSpot.

Why must they always call the game a beat-em up. It's a platformer not a beat-em up.

While it does have some platforming elements (jumping on platforms, collecting V-containers), the emphasis is more on "beat-em up", as that's how you advance in the game (as opposed to just rushing to the end of the level).

Just my $.02.

(And to those that haven't played the first one, you REALLY should give it a look. It's a blast to play!)

Yeah, it's a platformer action game, so beat em up is a fair description IMO. Though I prefer 2D action game.

Hoo-ray! Would have been nice to have it on the X-Box, though I had no problems with how the GC VJ looked or played (one of the few GC games I've played in recent history).

I doubt it'll be there, but I'm really hoping this game has a co-op mode. Regardless, I'm really excited about this game. I loved the first one, and this game will probably be great as well.

Cool, it looks like there will be a co-op mode.

In VJ2, Joe and his girlfriend Silvia -- both now fully playable -- are ready to face more challenging enemies and obstacles. The title even features a two-player cooperative mode. Equipped with her pompoms for up close fights and projectiles for long distance, Silvia proves that she's as mean and cool as Joe himself.

Early word is that he's just going to be a palette swap of another character, but I'm not even sure where that's gotten from, probably rumors.

Well I already own Joe on GC, heheh pre ordered and bought it the day of release..even got a V-watch with purchase. Palette swap or not if Dante is in the PS2 version Id buy it again. BUT if this is only a rumor and nothing special like this is done for the PS2 version = no sale.

Dante IS confirmed. Whether he's actually a useful extra character or not is the rumor.
