Do you always finish the games you start?
Hey everyone!
I remember back in the Sega Genesis days (or even Playstation) I always finished a game before buying another. I think it had to do with being a student (less money) and being disciplined enough to go through a whole game. Mind you I'm not a masochist and won't finish a game I don't like; and sports games are also an exception because of the quasi-infinite replay value. When it comes to my X-BOX I seem to be suffering from videogame ADD -wink- I presently have about 7 unfinished games sitting on the shelf; Prince of Persia, Splinter Cell (which is what, 2 years old now?) GTA pack and Armed and dangerous to name a few. I don't hate these games, I just...don't ...play them anymore. Now that I'm 35 (got more $$ than when I was a student) it seems everytime there's a new release that I want I just get it, thus neglecting my other unfinished games -rolleyes- I just finished "The Suffering" (was a short game though) and I'm now trying to finish "Ninja Gaiden" . What about you guys? Am I the only one who will finally finish Splinter Cell in 2010? |
I've finally gotten to the point where I've told myself that I must finish a game before I buy another one, as I have 10-12 that I'm halfway through, so I decided to start by working my way through my GBA stuff. We'll see how long it is before I cave.

welcome to the "old guys that can't finish games" club...
i've got lots of games from buffy to gta pack (which i just can't seem to get into) to halo still sitting there. i still finish some games like Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic and Beyond Good and Evil... i plan to quit soon so i can devote my time completely to gaming. ;) |
90% of the time yes I finish them. I want to know how a game will end as much as a movie or book so I usually do finish it. I have not finished a few terrible games and because of time a few good ones (someday I will though! ....maybe). There are still a few PSone RPGs I have never had time to start.
|
I used to try and complete games before moving on to the next... but with a rash (eewww) of great deals lately (namely, Circuit City) I find myself with way too many games. It's hard to make yourself finish one before tearing the shrink wrap off a new one. :)
The main reason I like to keep only one or two games going at the same time is because I usually forget the story and/or the controls if I leave a title in limbo for too long. That's the only reason... I don't feel any sort of "sense of duty" or guilt on the matter... no, really I don't... ;) |
I finish very few. I'm buying less games now because of this. Stuff with enjoyable stories like KOTR, the Hitman games or Mafia, I tend to finish :)

I don't beat that many but there are a few that I just have to beat.
I normally beat all my FPS and other shooter games since they are normally easier. I rarely beat RPGs. I've played a ton of the FF games and only ever beaten VII, VIII and IX. I tried beating X a few times but I can't stick with it and that is why I've passed on X-2 so far. I have a few games that I am working on beating. Both Buffy games, SSX3, 007 Everything Or Nothing and my newest game Ninja Gaiden. I should be busy for some time. |
I was just thinking about this actually, nope I really don't anymore, I love playing them sure but beating them doesn't seem to be my thing.
It really depends on the game, if it is stellar i'll be like a crack addict, pratically playing overnight like I recently did with Zone of Enders, Zone of Enders 2 and Prince of Persia, but if the game starts dragging or I really just hit a wall I can't figure out then I usually shelve it for a later time. Right now i'm playing Ninja Gaiden which i'm fairly close to beating. |
This thread is awesome!
I must have about 10-15 games with 5-10 hours invested in each of them. It's the new games that pull my attention from the current ones. But I'm perfectly fine with this situation, b/c all the games I've put on hold are games I've thoroughly enjoyed and I know I'll continue to enjoy them whenever I get around to them again. And in a sense, it makes the games last longer. If I actually complete a game, I don't think I'd play through it again, especially since there will always be more new games to distract me. |
I always used to, but once I got out of high school and started having to be responsible for all kinds of other stuff, I rarely do. I've probably started 15 games since I left high school in the past 3 years and haven't finished a single one. Max Payne 2 was the closest, but then for some reason I just stopped playing.

Aren't you guys supposed to say "I've got a stack of unplayed and/or unopened games as tall as me"
Never understood why people buy games, movies, whatever, and don't watch them, or open them. Maybe it's just the impatient person I am, but I always open my games or movies the same day I buy them. Even if I don't plan on watching them the same day. As for not finishing games I started, that happens alot too, sadly. Sometimes I just get bored with a game and stop playing. |
I have a fair share of unfinished games as well as upopened ones as well.

I finish almost every game i start unless it really sucks. Lately ive been buying alot, this month alone i bought 2 (Ninja Gaiden, Lifeline) and plan to get 3 more by months end (Onimusha:BW, Splinter Cell:PT, Resident Evil Outbreak). With that said, i always choose one i wanna play the most, play it to completion then open up another and play that one. I never buy 2-3 games and open em all up and get crammed with them all.
Recently, in the last few months ive finished: Ninja Gaiden Metroid: Zero Mission NFL Street Manhunt Castlevania:LOI Killswitch Fatal Frame |
I've probably finished only like 10% or less of my xbox games and I'm way behind on my pc games. *sigh*

NO. :(
I don't put in the time it takes to finish games and I'm not the best gamer skill wise. However, with the exception of Blood Omen 1 and 2 I've finished all the Legacy of Kain games and Soul Reaver games because they kick ass with great graphics and an interesting storyline. HALO was another game I couldn't put down. I really wish I had finished the Resident Evil games but I still like playing them. I did finish Onimusha 1 and I'm working on Onimusha 2. I like haveing a sword instead of a gun than runs out of bullets. |

I only finish games that manage to grab me, and generally don't go out of my way to do so.
I just beat Flashback on the Sega CD this last Fall. I generally just finish what truly entertains me, if it doesn't I'll wind up selling it (Suikoden III). Last year all I actually played through was: Metroid Prime, Splinter Cell, Flashback, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, Halo (again), and a couple various other small titles. |
Originally posted by RichC2 I just beat Flashback on the Sega CD this last Fall. Did you ever play/finish the original OUT OF THIS WORLD? Flashback is the sequel to that game. Personally, I couldn't get into Flashback. OUT OF THIS WORLD was a great game and when it came out it was really different. |
Me and my friends used to have a little competition to see who would finish the most games per month. When I had my website, I expanded it to include some of the regular visitors as well, and it ended up being pretty fun. We had rules and point systems and everything. Anyway, the impetus of the competition was to encourage all of us to pick games and then stick to them until finished.
Someone above said it best, now that we are all older and have money to buy games, it seems we have more money than time to actually play the games we buy! I could dig out the "rules" if anyone is willing to give it a go on these forums. Jeremy |

Not only do I rarely finish a game anymore, I usually get to the 90% mark, then never finish it. :(

I've never been all that good about finishing games. Some blow, so I won't even bother getting that far into it before it gets sold or traded. But even on games I do like I won't make it to the end 75% of the time. The worst had to be Diablo, made it all the way to the end level, and never went back to it! In my mind I beat the game. If I'd kept playing I would have beaten it, so why waste the time when I could move on to something else? Twisted logic, I know.
RPG's are about the only games I'll always try to finish, no matter what. And adventure games like some of the old Sierra Online games too. If it's a shooter, arcade style, etc.. I'll just keep playing it until I'm bored with it and move on. Glad to know I'm not the only one! I've played a lot of games in my life (I'm 34) and have always had the guilty feeling for not finishing each and every one. |
What, finish a game? I thought the object was that the one with the highest points wins. Or at least those are the types of games I like.
Nevermind about finishing a game, I have about 20 Xbox games from the best buy deal, that I haven't even started, just sitting there waiting for me to buy the Xbox. :-) |
I try to finish games before I go and get a new one. It really depends on how good the game is. I've started playing Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven again after leaving it unfinished for about 6 months. I still haven't finished Hitman 2 or the single player on SOCOM 1. The latter I got really frustrated with and decided I needed a break. I just haven't gotten back to it.
There are some games that if I really like (like Ratchet and Clank, Sly Cooper, and Beyond Good and Evil) I'll play all the way through at a rate of about an hour a night for something like a month. That way I don't blow through them in a weekend and don't get that bleary eyed look you get after playing for 4 or 5 hours. |
I have a problem of buying games and playing them for a few days and then when i get stuck i just never play the game again.I have quite a few games i havent finished, and Splinter Cell is one(although I think I will try to pick that one back up again at some point).
