"The 2 Red X Squares" was a damn hard game. But i'm gonna have to go with "Halo" on Legendary. Madden 2004 on All-Pro or All-Madden is fricking nuts too.

Stuntman was pretty damn hard. Luckily I didn't stress myself out over the cheapness of the difficulty too long and was able to recoup most of my money back thanks to eBay.

My friend rented that and was supposed to have it for 5 day's. He got fed up with the difficulty and took back the same night he rented it. I never had a chance to play it myself since i don't own a ps2 anymore, but it's always been one of those game's that i would like to try sometime.

How shameful...

For anyone who got red X's... the game I was referring to was Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders.

Obscure puzzles and the complete absence of "Internet" at the time of release made it a tough nut to crack.

Virtua Tennis.

It took me forever to become #1 in the World.

Why I started to play Tennis 2k2, I'll never figure out.

Defender

No matter how much older I get, I can fire that game up and still have controller throwing moments with it.

I'd agree with Ikaruga. Thank Jebus for the training and slowed down practices.

Parts of Halo on legendary. Gunmetal was a PITA too, finally just traded it away before finishing it.

Bionic Commando?this game was one of the easist games ive ever played, beat this game in one night and it was a 5 day rental.

Hardest game has to be the original Ghost & Goblins or Battle Toads for Nes,here are some others.

Contra:SS PS2
Shinobi PS2
Maximo
BlasterMaster Nes
Festers Quest Nes
Adventure Island Nes
Kid Nikki Nes (only the last level, impossible)
Batman Nes (last boss impossible)
Stuntman PS2
X-men Snes (controls where so bad it made it unbeatable)
Super Ghouls & Ghost(if you where really good you could beat this game but the fun just begins you have to beat it a second time to get the ending)

I think implicit in this question must be that the game was fun enough to keep playing despite the difficulty. Otherwise, there were about a hundred NES platformers/shooters that I played under emulation where I couldn't get past the first or second screen and gave up because the game just wasn't fun.

The hardest game I've ever beaten is a tie between beating Side Pocket on the NES (only did it once) and Ninja Gaiden on the NES. The days before the game save really sucked.

I forgot about "The Empire Strikes Back" for the NES, i don't think i even got past the first level on that one. Which sucked cuz i really wanted to fight Vader.

Super Ghost and Goblins and Super Empire Strikes Back for SNES.

Also, Resident Evil Code Veronica on Dreamcast.
