oldschool gamers, I need help: is there a diff. between Atari 7800 & 7800 Pro?
 

I was thinking of picking one of these up and I noticed that some are being sold as just the 7800 while others are being sold as a 7800 Pro. is there a difference?

I was not aware there was two different models. I have sold 7800's on ebay and have one myself. I do know that the 7800 does play all Atari 2600 games in addition to the 7800 games. I will watch this subject to see if anyone knows for sure. It's probably just a marketing thing.

I think one has the expansion port, one doesn't. Could be wrong, you might want to ask around in Atariage forums.

Hmm I have a 7800 not sure if its pro or not, I didn't realize there were other versions.

7800 prosystem started out as the 3600, but got renamed the 9000 and then they decided to change the name again... since it could play 2600 games and also 5200 games, they added em up and came up with 7800. It was made to use prosystem accessories, so it was called the 7800 prosystem. 7800 is correct. 7800 Pro is also correct. However, the system is called 7800 ProSystem. There is no difference between 7800 models other than the word 'pro'... perhaps the differences had to do with the accessories that came with it. You can read all about it on www.atari7800.com where there is a complete history on the console and the company. Interesting stuff. Found it in a quick google search.

I could have sworn that 5200 carts don't play on a 7800.

Sorry Trigger, but the 7800 could not play 5200 games. It only played 7800 and 2600 games.
The 5200 could play 2600 games if you bought the special adapter.
