Grand Theft Auto.. Vice City
Am about to let my 10 year old son play this game. Is this a big mistake? I already let him play GTA 2 or 3, not sure which it is. If I do let him play is there anything that I can warn him about or tell him to stay away from. Is it real bad? or not too bad? Thanks for your help.

It's about as over the top as it gets, but I think if you explain it to him, and he understands that fact (that's it's just a game and not to be taken seriously), it's not going to hurt him any.

This game was rated M for Mature meaning it is not suggested that anyone under that age of 17 should play it.

(I don't think you can avoid some of the stuff in the game though, its not like a movie where you can just close your eyes.) |

there is no way he should play this game.
|
It's parents like this who make the government want to censor everything.
|
let him play, if he already plays gta3 then just let him play vice city.
im not one of those hipocritical parents that doesnt let my kids play violent games then walk around the house cursing up a storm (ive seen this happen many times) which cause alot more emotional damage than playing a video game. and plus, take this from a young adult, if he REALLY wants to play this game, trust me, he will, whether its when no ones around or at a friends house... |
There are about 100,000,000,000,000 better things for a 10 year old to do than be playing Vice City, let alone video games in general.
Sign the kid up for basketball. Take him to a bookstore and have him pick out a couple books. It's snowing - let him go sledding and build snowmen. Rent a good family movie like Willy Wonka or Harry Potter or something. Heck, rent him Tron if he's into video games and if he's interested in being a programmer get him some computer books for kids. Anything, please. Just don't contribute to the detriment of our society by raising your children to do the same. Jeremy |
10 years olds should not play Vice City.

Jeremy Plus, when he starts bragging to his friends in school that he's played GTA:VC and the teacher overhears him, do you really want him to be able to say his parents bought it for him and told him to play it? Sneaking around the folks to do bad things is a rite of passage for kids. But doing "adult things" with parental approval- it just feels like that kid who used to go to R movies with his parents, then come to school the next day and practice all the new cusswords he learned and describe all the boobies he saw. |

Jeremy u sound like youre raising wussies dude, "just dont contribute to the detriment of society by raising your children to do the same"...man u sound like a video-hating politician, do us all a favor, since u seem to dislike video games so much, stay out of the video game forum... Remember, crazy people are crazy before they play ANY videogame. |
I'm of the opinion that you should let him play. As you said, he's already played GTA3, and there's nothing substantially worse in Vice City. However, make sure that you don't use it as a babysitter. Play the game with him, or be in the room while he's playing, so you're just able to explain the difference between reality and fantasy. Heck, by the time I was 8, I was mastering Mortal Kombat, and I turned out just fine

What the hell is wrong you?! Why the $#@*are you even asking this question?! DON'T BE A DUMB %@!*!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The kid is 10, give him some pokemon or something! Vice City involves having sex with prostitutes, killing Cubans, haitans and anyone who happens to be out walking the sidewalks or the beach, ANY and ALL cops who get in your way (which happens anytime, from walking down the street with a gun in your hand to blowing someone's head off with a .45 magnum), gatling guns, rocket launchers, flamethrowers (although I gotta say it's fun to burn someone, then watch them scream and run in futile agony before they drop dead, a burning hink of flesh). I can go on and on if you want - don't be a sh*thead, give the kid something else to do.
Like Josh Z said, you'll let him play the game, the kid picks up some bad things from it, he uses said newfound language, you blame the government fro not warning you about this game or banning it or something. Personally, I love video games, but the ratings are on the box for a reason! Just because something has harmless looking pics on the box, DOES NOT MEAN that it's for kids!! |
Buy him Manhunt to wash down that Vice City.

Its Harry Potter now or counceling later.

I am just going to go straight to the name calling.
metman86 you are an idiot. |

Could be a possible Easter present. ;) I watched tons of violent and graphic films I shouldn't of when I was younger. My aunt and grandparents spoiled me rotten and bought me anything I wanted. My grandmother bought me the unrated edition of Basic Instinct and my aunt bought me the unrated version of Sliver. I turned out fairly normal but it seems these days kids are snapping left and right for various reasons. I place the blame on parents more than I do video game makers. They made this game for adults and you let your 10 year old child sit down and play it. That is way wrong in my book. Don't shelter the kid but don't expect the kid to be ok if you let him grow up too fast. Milk and Cookie time shouldn't be replaced with a 40 and a Hustler magazine. |

For every kid that's actually affected negatively by these games there's probably thousands that aren't (just pulling that out of my ass, but still). It's different with everyone and I think it's wrong for people to say what is right and wrong for other people's children like they know what is the best thing for them. True, he asked for some opinions, but personally i think sitting around playing games can be as much a positive by stimulating ideas and imagination. Of course... not the kind of imagination you want with Vice City... but just making a general point :) Heck, you could make the kid go play sports and make him develop an agressive attitude towards others. Or get him on steroids at age 10 :P

I didn't know so many old ladies hung out in this forum :p
Lighten up already. You sound like Tipper Gore ranting about Prince and Twisted Sister back in the 80's :) |
Look, you folks here know I'm a big video game fan. I'm also a pediatrician. Do I think he will be scarred forever by playing this game? Probably not. Still, this is a game made for adults. It's definately not for kids anywhere near this age. It desenstizes kids to violence. It's inapropriate on many levels. I know lots of parents expose their kids to inapropriate movies and games; that doesn't make it right.

I dont think a 10 year old should be anywhere near Vice City. With all the other choices (other games, or other activities), why would you want your child to play such a violent game?
M rating or no M rating, the OP should be rational enough to realize this game is not for a 10 year old kid! "You know son, the sniper rifle would work so much better instead of the machine gun." Yeah, good parenting! |
