Looking for a few good Otters

I run this little thing called DTSL. It's a league for the fine and not so fine people here at DVDTalk. I'm inviting you guys to check us out.

DTSL is league for this game called SmallBall. But we're more than just a league for a damn_game. We're a frickin' community and we're looking to <s>colonize</s> expand to include Otters that don't frequent the Sports forum.

Why should you join us? Where else can you have a thread that will contain strategery, Christopher Lowell, J Lo's Ass, tiny little balls, a hatred for every other Monday and twikoff getting his ass handed to him by Idgie.

All I ask is for you to check it us out. You may be missing out on the greatest thing since sliced butter.

kvrdave 01-14-04 05:48 PM

I will check out you "smallball" thingy....but I'm suspicious.

kvrdave 01-14-04 05:49 PM

I don't see what it is, etc. What the hell is it?

Th0r S1mpson 01-14-04 05:49 PM

I personally would love to see some new members too. I've been playing for about a year and half now and it's still a lot of fun. Definately leads to some entertaining discussions and competition.

Anyone who is new, we're always happy to help you get started.

Come on in!

KVRDave: go to http://www.smallball.com and click on Baseball to get a look at the game. it doesn't even matter if you like baseball, really... the league and competition is the best part about it.

Pharoh 01-14-04 05:52 PM

Dave, you suck!

;)

kvrdave 01-14-04 05:54 PM

 I know :(

How do you play?

You have all these little midgets that you train in a training program. There are different skills: run, throw, catch, pitch, batting power etc. that you train them in.

They start out really bad, unable to catch or hit anything that comes their way. After a few days they resemble a 2-year old, occasionally catching something. Finally after a couple weeks they start to become somewhat decent. Of course, the farther you get, the better they get and it ends up getting really competitive.

You don't actually PLAY the games. You start games against similar-skilled opponents (or not, if you wish) and they play the game themselves, based on the training you have given them.

Each day they gain TP (Training potential) which you then use in whatever skills you want them to improve for that day.

It sounds weird not actually controlling the games, but it's seriously addicting and fun to watch. :)

If you get into it seriously, you will want to get the Deluxe Trainer, but the free one is enough to find out if you want to get into it (plus they let you use the Deluxe Trainer free on Fridays any way as a trial)

SmallBall tries to fight Breast Cancer. Those of you who don't play, why do you love Breast Cancer so much? That's just mean.

Besides, now is the golden age of the game. Not only do you no longer have to tolerate my rantings and ravings, but now that I've retired, you all actually have a chance to win.

Oh yeah... and someone in the DVDTalk league will generally make you a cool team logo if you join. :)

Here's my team, Ritzkrieg:

Unless you're Idgie and then your team is never competitive. ;)

Then there's also the fun part of naming your players. Check out the names of the Gay Renegades.

And then you can customize your team page in DTSL to some gaudy color scheme

Thanks to the new members. Our next season starts up on the 27th so you'll have plenty of time to become familar with the league. Don't forget to sign up in the DTSL Forum, where there's a FAQ on the league a good number of training tips.

If anyone wants take a rolling start at this, we have several teams that people are willing to offer to new people so they can be competitive from the get go.

dancinns 01-15-04 12:00 PM

I've got to keep this on the 1st page. :)

We're still accepting new members and I promise we won't pass you around as initiation ;)

I haven't ever done this because it sounds time intensive. Is that the case? How do you "train" your team?

das Monkey 01-15-04 01:55 PM

The BNH Formula proved effective for my team, but you'll want to familiarize yourself with the game before employing such a strategery.

It's not too time intensive. It's probably say it takes at most 20 minutes to train your team each day. For me training usually takes about 10 minutes. Then it takes about a minute or two to start a game. You don't have to watch your game so you can just start it and then close the program and walk away. I'm guessing that it'll take about 30 minutes of your time each day and you can do most of this stuff while your checking your e-mail or 'working'.

Here's their tutorial of how the game works.
Here's their FAQ. They'll explain the training process a little better than I can.
