Will Dlink equip work with Netgear for wireless gaming?
 

I picked up a wireless router and pccard to get my wifes laptop on the net. They are netgear. I was wondering if this Dlink thing will be compatible to get my PS2 online wirelessly too.

Yeah it will, but "G" is preferable.

I use a D-Link AP connected to my XBox to get on LIVE through my Netgear WiFi Router with no issues. As long as they use the same WiFi standard there should be no issues. The DLink 810+ should be no problem as I also own that Bridge and have used it with my Netgear Router.

I wasn't sure if it had to be the same brand or if style was all that mattered.

By the way, why is "G" preferable. The way I understand it is that "B" transmits much faster than my DSL line can handle anyway, so why should I spend the extra cash for "G" when it won't make a difference?

IMO, G is only preferrable if you're moving large files around a network. Since B transmits much faster than any home DSL or Cable connection, B is fine for most situations.

If your router is an 802.11b router, then there is no reason to buy an 802.11g bridge for your PS2.

If the router and PC card you already have are G however, some routers don't do well with operating with B and G equipment together though.

But I'm guessing yours is B, so don't worry about it.

That's the adapter I use on Xbox Live and I don't have any problems.

But as the others have said, "G" is better for moving files around. But if it's only for gaming that won't be an issue.

As mentioned earlier, B is more than sufficient or online gaming, as you'll never move data or files faster than that.

802.11G (54Mb/s) is overkill for any video game console, since you still will bottleneck at you ISP (under 1.5 Mb/s). 802.11B (11Mb/s) should be more than enough for most gamers.

That's what I thought. I just saw that Gallant Pig said that "G" is preferable so I wanted to know why.
