Question about Xbox Repair
Well, my Xbox died last night. :(
I have a question for those who have sent their Xbox into Microsoft to be repaired: if they end up switching out your hard drive, do they try to salvage your save games? |

Well, 50% is better than 0%. I'll ask them about it when I call tonight. If they say "No way" then I'll probably just dump the entire system and sell all my games.

What died? CD-rom or Harddrive or System?
|
Based on the error code which I looked up on a website, it's probably the hard drive. Doesn't bode well for my save games, I'm sure...but if Microsoft will at least make an effort to keep them for me it's worth the money and trouble of sending it in.

If Microsoft Charge you $99.99 for Repair your XBOX (don't do it)
I rather try Ebgames trade it in & Received $100.00 Credit. Then Pickup NEW Xbox Bundle w/ 3 games for $179.99 and send out the form get $30.00 Ebgames Voucher. You'll save $20.00 plus Shipping & received 3 FREE games plus $30 Ebgames Voucher. If you don't want this 3 FREE games just try find cheapest USED XBOX game & Trade in for NINJA GAIDEN (XBOX) for $9.99 :) |

Originally posted by Groucho My only concern is getting my saved games back, so going through Microsoft is my only option. |
Originally posted by alexkat You could try a software mod to access your xbox hard drive and transfer the saves to your pc. |
Originally posted by Groucho You don't happen to have a link to such a utility? A search on Google only generated a ton of links to instructions on how to "Backup" Xbox software. |
I believe that ftp access is disabled under normal xbox operation. It is possible to use a mechassault savegame or a 007: agent under fire savegame to put your box into a state where you can access ftp without a modchip, but if your box won't even boot, I doubt thats possible.
Are you willing to physically remove the HD yourself and plug it into your PC? |

bad news. I forgot about the unlocking part, which you won't be able to do. Sorry to raise your hopes. |
Oh well. Thanks for the help, anyway. I've bookmarked that page as the information is good to know. Once I get through this I'll probably start backing up my HDD on a regular basis.
Hopefully in the next generation they'll include a writer so you can back up your saves to CD-RW or CD-R. |
When my NIC port died on my Xbox, Microsoft said that send it back to them + $109 and they'll send me another refurb unit. THanks but no thanks. I sold it for $100 and bought a brand new one.
