Review wanted for Xbox wireless controllers.

What is the best one and are any of them like the Xbox contoller S?

jiggyblau 11-16-03 09:07 PM

I have the Logitech one and I like it a lot. Only thing is... I rarely ever play my xbox. Being the case, the batteries will still run out quickly. I think the feel and the size of the controller are fine. It's definitely expensive though--I took advantage of the 20% rebate from Logitech when I got mine, cause I'd have never spent $70 on it.

Ginsu 11-16-03 09:43 PM

I also have the Logitech. 2 of them as a matter of fact. By far the best available.

I really don't need wireless though so I am interested in selling them.

funkyryno 11-16-03 09:54 PM

Has anyone tried the new Pelican controller? It's a lot cheaper than the Logitech one.

fab 11-16-03 10:15 PM

I have both the Logitech and the Pelican Eclipse wireless controllers. The Logitech is large and well built and everything feels solid, my only complaint is the D-pad. It's pretty awful for anything that requires precision (Soul Calibur 2). I only paid $50 for it on sale at Best Buy a few months back.

The Pelican Eclipse is smaller and feels more like the Controller S than the Logitech one. The D-Pad is way better than the Logitech one and maybe even a tad better than the Controller S. The analog sticks feel nice but the other buttons all have a cheap feel to them even though they haven't let me down yet. I also like the fact that a separate Black and White button are put ont he shoulders of the controller.

Anyway... I actually prefer the Pelican to the Logitech. The Pelican is also has a $30 lower MSRP.

does the pelican have a memory slot so you can use the headset?

I believe the part that you plug into your xbox does. But I guess that would negate the advantage of using a wireless controller, wouldn't it?

young 11-17-03 12:53 AM

no, the headset/mike plugs into the controller's memory slot (one of the 2).

there's nothing that goes to the xbox directly from the headset. so, you'd still be wireless.

the real question is, will the xbox live headset work on these wireless controllers?

Trigger 11-17-03 04:50 AM

I have the Pelican and I love it. I don't like the Logitech one cuz it's too big and oddly shaped (yet, I like the original xbox controller more than the S - go figure). I also don't like the MadCatz one cuz of the shape. The Pelican has more range than the Wavebird and the batteries have yet to run out on me and I've had it for several months.

I don't know about the Live headset thing - I could check i suppose - but it's wireless, so i use it for stuff that I don't need a headset for. I have different controllers for different purposes.

Kellehair 11-17-03 06:50 AM

The Pelican has more range than the Wavebird
Just how much range does it have? I remember the IGN reviewer used his Wavebird from 90 feet away.

dvdmovie1 11-17-03 07:40 AM

I am very pleased with the Pelican wireless and find it to be very reasonably priced at 39.99

BoBoish2 11-17-03 08:18 AM

Pelican wireless here. I have been extremely pleased for the $35 bucks I paid for it...even if it had cost more. Its also the only third-party controller I've used that has good analog sticks. You do have to mash on the buttons a tad more, but you get used to it.

Bo.

I don't know - I have a 1800 square foot house and I went into the kitchen with it and then down the hall to the end bedroom and went inside it. I even went outside with it - front door and back. Maybe it was the batteries, but my roommate's Wavebird couldn't manage quite that far. I probably spoke too soon though - I should pop new batteries in each controller and test out the distance. Doesn't really matter I guess cuz I can't see the need to play from that far away from the TV.

Michael Corvin 11-17-03 09:36 AM

I like the Logitech. I've had it almost a year now. Batteries drain quick though, because of the vibrate. I turn it off in game.

What I love is the sensitivity of the analog sticks. Very smooth.

Lack of a memory card slot for the X-box live headset sucks though. But where would you put the batteries?

s}{ammer 11-17-03 11:55 AM

another eclipse owner here. Love that controller.

Gizmo 11-17-03 12:25 PM

I have 2 Pelicans as well. Love it.

ravan 11-17-03 12:40 PM

Would love to know if it works with the headset.. that would be smooth.. I'm sure it doesnt though :(

Gizmo 11-17-03 12:43 PM

Im pretty sure the Pelicans do not work with the headset... I remember trying it a while ago with no luck... Can anyone confirm? My XBL membership has expired...

warcp 11-17-03 01:21 PM

Lack of a headset port in the controller has kept me from getting a wireless controller, but I think they're coming out with a wireless headset. So, for a combined $200 you can go wireless on XBL.

s}{ammer 11-17-03 01:24 PM

The batteries plug into the spot for the headset or memory cards on the pelican wireless. The base unit has the headset/memory slots so that is not wireless.

goLUCKY 11-17-03 01:56 PM

If you buy one of those bluetooth headsets with the 2.5mm adapter, you could go with the wireless controller and wireless headset. it'll only cost you $150 or so. ;)

ok, sorry... i re-read your post and now that i'm a bit more awake, i understand what you're saying.

the wireless controller has a part that plugs into the xbox and that part has the memory slots. so the headset would need to connect to that and thus, defeating the purpose of the wireless-ness.

Trigger 11-19-03 03:00 AM

I just saw a new wireless one today that looked awesome. I almost picked it up, but instead decided to go home and try to order it online cheaper.

Anyway - it's from a new company called Intech. It comes in Black and Green - it's the Intech Lazer Wireless controller. It was 50 bucks at most places, but I picked it up for 40 at buy.com. Might be cheaper elsewhere, but I was picking up other stuff too, so it worked for me. It has abxy buttons that are skewed kinda like the original Xbox controller - and that's what I like. It also comes with a rechargeable battery pack and charger. The base also has slots for memory cards and I'm thinking the headset too. Not to mention that it's pretty good looking too - nice comfy looking design - smaller than the original controller - metallic accent panels. I'm gonna try it out and post my findings here - it should be here in a week or so.

So that's 4 now as far as I know - not sure about these prices...

Logitech - 80-90 bucks
Intech - 40-50 bucks
Pelican - 30-40 bucks
MadCatz - 40-50 bucks

Joshic 11-19-03 09:08 AM

The Logitech wireless controller is $49 with free shipping at buy.com.

Michael Corvin 11-19-03 09:23 AM

well my logitech started acting up this week. The left analog is loose.. i.e. if I sit the controller down and don't even touch it the character on screen moves. Not good.

Called Logitech, they are sending me a replacement and don't want the broken one back. I may have to crack it open after the new one arrives and see if I can fix it. That way... 2 Logitechs. Kudos, to them for their warranty and standing behind their products.

mrpayroll 11-29-03 04:40 PM

I just saw a 2 pack of Pelican Eclipse wireless controllers for the XBox at Costco for $49.99. That seems to be an excellent price. Maybe I should buy 1 pack. They also had them for the PS2 for the same price. Controllers are different, of course.

Chris

Trigger 11-30-03 03:43 AM

You should pick up that Pelican pack... best wireless controllers I've tried.

I got that Intec one and have been using it. It's not as good as the Pelican one. It feels kinda cheap - not as solidly built as other controllers. The buttons are nice and the sticks are great, but the buttons are a tad too close to the right stick and that can sometimes cause a mis-hit. Also - there's something wrong with mine and sometimes the controller thinks I pressed a button when I didn't. It isn't that often, but I may have to get it exchanged for a different one. The rechargable battery is a great feature, but you still have to remove the battery pack to recharge it. no biggie. It's a decent choice - I'd rank it above the MadCatz one, but it's not as good as the Pelican or the Logitec.

CaptainMarvel 12-07-03 01:34 PM

I bought the Pelican version yesterday, and it's not working out too well. There's a noticeable delay between when I press a button and when the game reacts, and not all my button presses are even picked up. I'm returning it today.

Did you buy the 2 pack from Costco?

No... we only have 1 Costco in the area, and I don't even know if it's open yet. I bought it from Gamestop. I returned it today and got Prince of Persia instead.

flashburn 12-22-03 11:36 AM

Well since the mod's decided to lock the other thread..I am going to repost my question here..

I was thinking about going wireless for my PS2, Cube and Xbox. I have decided to get the Wavebird(obviously) for the Cube. The Airstyle (http://www.lik-sang.com/info.php?cat...ducts_id=3222& ) for PS2. I am however not sure what brand to go with for Xbox. I am leaning toward the Cosmo due to it looking so similiar to the S-Controller(http://www.lik-sang.com/info.php?cat...ducts_id=3534& ). Has anyone here had any experience or heard anything about this controller? Is there a better alternative?

funkyryno 12-22-03 05:30 PM

I've discovered that my wireless controllers -- a Wavebird for the Cube and two Pelicans for the Xbox -- work best when I unplug my old cordless phone.

flashburn 12-23-03 07:28 PM

I just recieved a reply from someone at Lik-Sang about the Cosmo Wireless controller. They stated that 'the performance is exactly the same as the original wired controller', when I asked if the analog sticks were loose (like the Logitech pad) or like the standard S-Controller. So not only does it look identical to the S-Controller, it might feel the same too. I think I will probably place an order for it and the Airstyle in the coming weeks.

Joshic 12-24-03 11:16 AM

thanx for the update flashburn. Lately I have put aside my Logitech wireless and have been using the S Controller. The Logitech's sticks are loose but don't bother me most of the time (no problems sniping & shooting in Halo). But for precision driving in Project Gotham 2 (esp. for the cone challenges), I needed to go back to the S Controller.

Roan 12-24-03 12:05 PM

I was thinking about getting the Cosmo until I saw that it uses rechargeable batteries. I don't like the idea of having to worry if the batteries are charged when I want to play.

Michael Corvin 12-24-03 12:08 PM

The newest logitech isn't as loose. They did a redesign w/o telling anyone. I am in the process of fixing the broken one and it is a tad different than the new one.

I think I may have a fix if anyone is interested in fixing or tightening up theirs.

That is good to hear. I might have to stop by Bestbuy and see if I can try one. I am still leaning toward the Cosmo due to its rechargable batteries included (with charger) and the almost exact S-Controller design.

Spiderbite 12-30-03 02:17 PM

Any word of Microsoft putting out a first party wireless controller?

I want to go wireless on my controller but I prefer to buy first party stuff since it usually handles better. And if I can't use a wireless on Xbox Live...what's the use?

DaveNinja 12-30-03 03:55 PM

I got the pelican 2 pack for Xbox from costco. the controllers seem to work fine, sometimes they dont seem to "sync" for a little while when i start a game. if i go up and unplug and then re-plug or change the channel and band they start working and dont have any further problems. They are near my internet wireless basestation (airport), maybe thats messing them up.
i think i'm just spoiled by the wavebird.

I like the feel of the Pelican since it is basically built like the controller s but with the black and white buttons also by the triggers, but when playing Project Gotham 2 I have to use the S since it has a better analog stick. I have yet to find a wireless controller that has the same feel as the controller s, maybe Microsoft will do a first party wireless soon.
