Official PSP Concept

Most Interesting. Discuss.

PixyJunket 11-04-03 05:32 PM

I smell fake. The design is just.. wrong.

PixyJunket 11-04-03 05:34 PM

Hmm.. looks like it might be a real concept art. I hope they don't go with that design or anything close. If the discs ar esupposed to be 3 inches, just how small are they trying to make the unit?

joshd2012 11-04-03 05:42 PM

Don't forget that the screen is 4.5". Its a real concept, but only a concept. Obviously, the final product will probably only resemble this one slightly, if at all. Still fun to see what Sony is thinking about.

cheapskate 11-04-03 05:47 PM

Errr...looks... different.

Is the POWER button really going to be that close to the DOWN arrow? Surely it should be a switch...or perhaps there will be a "hold" feature like CD players.

Glossy finish - I can imagine that looking pretty ugly once my greasy fingers get all over it - and are the buttons on a CURVE? Wha? The whole thing looks like a keychain.

I am guessing by the screenshot that "Aquaman: Battle for Atlantis" is going to be a launch title...

Trigger 11-04-03 05:48 PM

I think it's pretty. I really like the design. I'll buy it if it's relatively inexpensive. Never bought any gameboy models cuz they weren't backlit - and the new one is backlit, but still too dark. I do have a Sega Gamegear though.

young 11-04-03 05:50 PM

 i like it.

claweight 11-04-03 06:21 PM

i think it looks pretty damn sharp. but...what's up with the cover? does it come completely off or something? not too sure about that.
if it ends up having a glossy finish, smudge marks will definitely show all over the thing. still adds class to it, though.

Drexl 11-04-03 06:37 PM

What's with the control on the left? Does the circle in the center move around inside the larger circle like the NES Max, or does the larger circle move as one part? If it's analog and that's all there is, a separate d-pad will be sorely missed for some types of games.

young 11-04-03 06:37 PM

i think that's the back of it. it sounds like there are several concepts of which this is one.

by the time it comes out, it'll probably be a sanitized for mass consumption version.

joshd2012 11-04-03 07:44 PM

I actually like it. I think it does have some problems, but the overall slickness of it is pretty cool.

I don't know how good the buttons would be if it they were really smooth - wouldn't your fingers just slip right off? And for as big as the screen is, I would want something protecting it.

RoQuEr 11-04-03 10:42 PM

didn't the gamegear need 8 batteries and last only 45 minutes?

I believe it was 6, and lasted just under 2 hours. But... it's been so long...

My guess is the circle in the center is an analog stick that pops out of the unit. In fact I'm hoping all the buttons pop out (except the power button) since the idea of playing a system with nothing but recessed buttons makes my fingers ache.

I guess Sony had a financial meeting where they discussed the PSP and released some details. This is an early mock-up and will most likely change. Interesting how they target the iPOD with this baby too. Wonder how much this will cost if they are going to release a MP3 player for $60?

GatorDeb 11-05-03 12:18 AM

I like the one EGM was showing. The white-cased one.

Dan Average 11-05-03 12:58 AM

The "one EGM was showing" (which they basically made up out of thin air) wasn't necessarily "white-cased." It was just a schematic drawing, so there was no color.

Trigger 11-05-03 01:03 AM

I like the one I pictured in a dream I had after eating 5 packages of gummy worms... if the one they release doesn't look exactly like the one in my head, I won't like it... :p

The PSP will have a rechargable battery. They were just talking about the GameGear and how it needed 6 batteries back in the day.

Trigger 11-05-03 01:34 AM

The gamegear battery thing was retarded, but it was still an awesome handheld... usually I'd just play it plugged in. *shrug*

Ralph Wiggum 11-05-03 01:46 AM

I like the basic idea of the concept:

this is going to be a sleek, entertainment device, not just a portable game system.
