What's Japan's deal with blood type?
Every Japanese-designed game with multiple characters, fighting games, SSX, even SW:AED all list the character's blood type (A+/- seems especially popular). It's more common to list blood type than even weight or height.
My friend says blood type is a BIG deal in Japan, but he didn't know why.
So what's up with this obsession with blood type?

Japanese debate about blood types began back in the 1920's and 30's in reaction to western racism which asserted that Asians were lower in the evolutionary chain because the most common Asian blood type is B, which is not common in Caucasians but common in animals.

I dunno, though, since I'm O pos.

"For a society so modern and sophisticated it seems strange people are so caught up in the mumbo jumbo of blood types. According to Mangajin, many Japanese sniff at the idea of there being any connection between blood types anbd personality, but they still ask new acquaintances what blood type they are."
yeah, although people in general, do not take this stuff or astrology seriously, i still hear people talk about it at parties and it makes me shudder how ignorant people can be.

I've always wondered about that too. All the anime characters always have their blood type listed in the chara profiles on the DVD's.

Lots of Japanese people have all kinds of weird preconceptions. It comes from being such a homogenous country. Things like Japanese intestines and Western intestines are different (hence Japanese people can eat different foods), blood types are important, Japan is unique because it has four distinct seasons, etc.

Here, its just something to ask, to prompt some conversation; kind of like astrology - yet, slightly different. No one really believes it like some people do with astrology.
