It depends what system you have and your interest in online play. NBA Live 2004 has 5-on-5 online play for the PS2 only and that sounds like it could be very cool. ESPN is Live-enabled.

ESPN will most likely have adjustable sliders, they have in their past games.
Also, as far as online play goes, ESPN has Live 2004 beat for two reasons....Xbox Live for Xbox version, and PS2 version has online leagues.

Ive only heard bad things about Live. I dont know anyone who has played ESPN. As for Live, Ive heard they gone overboad with trying fix last years problems to the point wear:
U cant have ANY fastbreaks
Shaq cant even dunk without getting his shot blocked
The defense isnt imroved, but instead unrealistically hard
THE GRAPHICS ARE WORST
Again these are oppinions Ive heard from others (2 friends) as I have yet to play either of them. Madden has been keeping me more than busy.

I played Live last year and when I had my point guard getting 5 blocks a game, I decided that it was juuuuust a tad unrealistic. So I tried NBA 2k3 and it blew Live away. I expect the same this year. I used to be a huge EA fanboy, but now they just don't have realistic games anymore. Tiger Woods 2004 is the only EA game I have liked lately. Anyway, I am rambling

In PSM's reviews, they start off ESPN's review with, "Choosing 2002's top basketball game was difficult. This year it's easy."
While, for Live, they start off with, "In basketball, it's called a drop-step, but everyone else calls it 'taking a step backwards'. This year NBA Live drop-stepped."
This matches up with just about every impression I've read, so I don't know how someone could have just heard bad things about both of them.

damn, how hard can it be to improve slightly on some of the issues from last year, ever so slightly improve the graphics and tweak the online play? geez, what is there like 1 guy working on LIVE at EA?

I didn't like the way Sega's 2003 basketball game played, so unless they tweaked it, there is no way I'm picking it up.

Call me superficial but the graphics in Live are just terrible. Animation, player models, and textures are all pretty poor. Why can Sega get so much detail into the players (see ESPN NHL, ESPN NBA) while only a few of the stars in EA's games remotely resemble their namesake?

I loved Live 2003 and hate 2004,its weird how EA can make a great Football and Golf games that improve every year but with B-Ball and Hockey they take steps backwards? If Espn turns out to be butt I will be playing alot more Maddens and TW online.

ESPN is what I'll be buying.

You're not saying TW is realistic. I love the game and haven't played 2004 but I lost count of the number of hole in ones and rounds in the low to mid 50s.

No, seriously I know it's arcadey (that power up shot is the biggest arcade-like feature) but it is fun

Arcade Golf is fun, but for me Arcade Basketball is not. Looks like I will stick with NCAA Basketball 2003 and skip Live 2004. Maybe if the Xbox drops to $99 bucks this holiday season I'll pick it up and ESPN BBall.

ESPN for sure. although i don't like the name as it reminds me of the crappy ESPN licensed games of the past. the 2k name, though not very popular in terms of sales, always represented for myself and my friends a continually evolving (for the better) line of sports games with emphasis on realism.
Can't wait!

IGN Xbox ESPN BB review:
9.0 Presentation
The ESPN layout once again dominates the style side of things, but where?s my NBA Crib?
10.0 Graphics
The best player details ever captured. Looks so much like the real thing, you?ll think Rasheed snuck into your bedroom (hide the chips).
7.0 Sound
The gameplay audio is fine, it?s the announcers that need to be muted.
9.0 Gameplay
The open floor will lead to more and better fast break opportunities, while IsoMotion adds a new level of strategy to beating opponents off the ball.
9.5 Lasting Appeal
24/7 mode will have you playing, well, 24/7. And that?s not even counting the amount of time you?ll spend on your franchise.
9.2

I've always chosen Sega's brand over EA's simply because NBA Live has always sucked. It wasn't until last year's version that it greatly improved and wasn't as sucky, but I still didn't like it. Same goes for the baseball games.
