The price rumor thing is just something started by Sony to keep people from buying lots of gamecubes. Completely untrue, and honestly I can't believe that anyone would believe it. If it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is. Remember the $149 xbox rumor last christmas?

taylor, it seems that the rumor would more likely slow down PS2 sales than it would gamecube sales. Right now, the gamecube is $99, but if somebody wanted a PS2, they'd either pay the full price now, or wait to see if this rumor is true.

How is that a thread crap. We are talking about PS2 for $99. I said I don't need one since the only game that enticed me was GTA. Maximo, and Mark of Kri looked cool too, but other than that, they have nothing that interests me, plain and simple. If that makes it a thread crap then :crap:

Well, look at it this way. I have $100--I can:

a) buy a gcube now
b) buy a ps2 in a month or two if the rumors or true

Without the rumor, I'd buy the gcube straight up because I knew I couldn't afford the ps2. And by that time, I may have $125-$150 so I can afford the ps2 at $149, the real price it'll drop to.

I'm sure you're correct in that some people are holding off on buying a gamecube to see if the PS2 rumor is true, but I think my statement has validity also. To elaborate on my point, Nintendo has confirmed and advertised this new price nationwide, whereas this unconfirmed PS2 rumor is largely isolated to a few discussions on the internet, such as this one. As such, the number of consumers who pass up the PS2 for the gamecube at its reduced price will greatly outnumber the amount of people who hold off on buying any console to see if this rumor is realized in the near future.

Here's the point--if somebody was going to buy a ps2 right now for $179 but heard it might drop in price (so they held off for a month), what are they going to buy if it doesn't? That's right, still a ps2.

Now if you're one of those borderline customers who's buying a gamecube and you here that the ps2 might be $99 soon, you'll hold off for a month or two too. Now if the ps2 drops to $149, you might be tempted to pick that up over a gcube for $99, where you might have not before.

I had a PS2 awhile ago, and got rid of it because I didn't have time to play it. Now that I have a little more time, I am not sure I want one again because my Xbox and Gamecube are keeping me entertained quite nicely. But if it did indeed drop to $99, there is a 90% chance I'd pick one up again. So let's hope the rumors are true :D

OK, it's like this:
A thread crap is an unsolicited slam or criticism that comes out of nowhere and serves no purpose for the advancement of the thread. If a thread is about a good deal for, let's say, The Matrix Reloaded DVD and somebody posts "That movie sucked! I wouldn't see that POS again if you paid me!", I think we're in agreement that would constitute a :crap:
Likewise, in this case we had a thread about a possible huge price reduction on the PS2 and you posted that you wouldn't buy it even if it were $50. You see, the topic of the thread was the potential price reduction, not "Is the PS2 worth the $$" or "Your opinion of the PS2". So while you may feel that your opinion of the system has merit (and FWIW I strongly disagree with it, BTW), it certainly wasn't solicited in the context of this thread and was, therefore a :crap:

Opinions on consoles, games, etc. belong in threads asking for them-- i.e. review threads, discussiong threads etc.

Threads about price drops, deals, etc. are not the place to post opinions on the merit of things.

Uh Oh! Now we can't even use are 'opinions' in PS2 threads! I seem to remember 'opinion' threads in the GameCube $99 thread...and knowone seemed to care...hmmm...

Shouldn't be in any thread not discussing the merits of the system.

If you want to state your opinion on the PS2, dig up the fall system buyers guide and post it (intelligently) here.

No one talking about a price drop is interested in hearing that someone thinks the system sux and isn't worth $50.

It's the total definition of a thread crap. The no thread crap rule came along in large part to people bashing movies in threads discussing released dates, specs of the DVD etc. They're not relevant to the discussion at hand, and just pull the thread off topic. People are free to share their opinions, they just need to go in relevant threads.

I'm going to write a dissertation:
"Disruptive Communication: Radical Thread-crapping interpreted- A look into the methods, rebuttals, and counter-rebuttals of thread-crap culture and the effects of esoteric wordage in the context of discussions concerning interactive entertainment"

With the news of Sony's drop in sales, maybe there is some validity in the original story. One can only hope...

No discussing the quality of the PS2, doing so in a price drop thread is the very definition of a thread crap. To suplement what I said above, here's an admins explanation of a thread crap, from the "All about thread craps" thread in the DVD Talk forum for those that haven't seen it. Just substitute game for movie and disc. :D

I still can't see Sony droppinf the price to $100 unless they have the PS3 RIGHT around the corner. Nintendo has always had a smaller pricetag then the others (first it was $100, then $50, and now $100 difference), and if Sony were to drop...what would happen there?

Nintendo would drop again, probably to $79.99 or $89.99.

This is 100% true, i work at target and i was talking with our entertainment specialist and he confirmed it, PS2 $100, XBOX cant drop its price, they are all ready losing money on each system they sell,

And what is an entertainment specialist? Is he the clerk in the video game area or is he higher in the company? Has he seen pricing information, etc?

Also stating that they can't price drop since they are losing money is like saying that Microsoft is not willing to pay for market share, which we know they are willing to do.

How can the game be free at the $149.99 price if the PS2/X-Box will be selling for $99.99? What's the time diff bet the 2 prices?

the new ps2s are progressive scan right, why would they upgradethe hardware and drop the price?

Yes, it's the day after thanksgiving.

No one can confirm anything yet, even the target report is just a rumor from a new member reporting what the electronics guy at his target said, in other words it could be true or it could be total BS.

I think the new ones are only coming in the online bundle set. I'm guessing that the $99 ones would be w/o the online adapter and could be a method of clearing that stock out even.

Black Friday ads should surface in the next week or two and I'm sure we can all plan accordingly :)

Actually, the ones in the online bundle currently, are NOT progressive scan.

I imagine, in the future, all newly manufactured PS2s will be progressive scan as it was a redesign so I doubt they'll bother making any more of the older model.

I'm not sure how you tell from the packaging whether it's the pregressive scan model or not, probably have to look at the serial number.
