Best Mario Game?
Just the main series, so Golf, Tennis, RPG, etc. are excluded.
For me it comes down to SMB3, Super Mario World, and Yoshi's Island. Yoshi's Island lost out because of the crying mario. Annoying as hell, plus just having to catch him, rather than dying when hit, makes beating the game too easy. It's a real tough pick between SMB3 and SMW, in the end I went with SMW. It simply has much better level design, with longer levels and all the hidden exits. SMB3's levels are much shorter, but it does have by far the best power ups in the series, which made it a close call for me. |
I picked Mario 3.. both Mario World's are probably tied for second. Mario 3 just had more.. I don't know.. imagination to it? Something about it.. yeah SMW had more levels and they were bigger.. but having Yoshi replace those cool suits hurt it.
For the love of God, why won't Nintendo bring back the Koopa Kids?! They were simply the greatest thing to ever come out of the entire Mario franchise. |

SMB 3 for NES. My fav of all time
|
M64 for me... almost a perfect game
|
I picked Mario 64 for the fact that I've played through that game 15-20 over the past 7 years. I love all the choices but for me 64 had the best replay value.
|
Tough tough choice between SMB3 and SMW, but I'll go with SMB3. (Even though you can beat it in a few minutes if you choose that route). :D
|
My top 3:
1. Super Mario Bros. 3 2. Super Mario 64 3. Super Mario World |
Super Mario World all the way. Endlessly playable. Probably the best game ever made.
|
Mario 64... revolutionary; perfection.
Followed by: Mario 3 Mario World |

Originally posted by sdcrym Have you ever tried to get 100 points in every level? It's quite a challenge. But yes, the 100 points is damn hard. I've never bothered much with it. I hate collecting hidden stuff and trying to get through levels perfectly. Just not fun IMO. Too much trial and error (especially with keeping 30 stars and getting all the red coins before they disappear or get carried off) and I hate trial and error gameplay. |
Super Mario World for me. It was the most balanced, polished, and refined of all the mario games. It didn't have the imagination or revolutionary gameplay of the other games but i still loved it.
The original will always be one of my favorite games of all time but it's not my favorite Mario game. The levels and bosses needed more variety and the powers were really limited. Still one of the most solid games ever. Mario 2 was just like the first. Harder though, which was cool. Doki Doki Panic was different, but still very fun. The lack of variety hurts it just as much as the original, but the different characters and how their powers affects gameplay was cool. Super Mario Bros. 3 had a lot of cool ideas, but they weren't implemented very well. The huge variety of powers was really neat but a lot of them came off more as a novelty than being genuinely useful. Most of the levels were super-short and i didn't like how you couldn't travel between worlds you'd already played. Yoshi's Island represented a titanic leap in 2D platform gameplay. The different Yoshi powers, how dying was less annoying, and the bosses were awesome. Still, it was a bit too easy and even with all the collection challenges it doesn't offer a whole lot. Mario 64 was a very creative game, but like all revolutionary games it doesn't hold up quite as well today as it was back in the day. Sunshine was a joke. Heavily unbalanced, incredibly frustrating camera, and a rediculous amount of obscure collections. Some challenges were near-impossible, and the bosses were all too easy. Neat sub-levels though. I've had a lot of fun with the Mario Land/Wario Land series. Definitely had Miyamoto's touch. |
I picked Mario64 because I absolutely loved that game and still do. I have beaten it countless times, and think the Z-jump is one of the most fun things to do. I would go through whole boards just z-jumping insead of running. I like Sunshine, but missed the Z-jump aspect, and felt that finding all the blue coins to get every star was unfair. I know it's not a requirement, but I felt like it was an impossible task without spending your entire life or getting a strategy guide.
SMB3 and SMW were both really great games, but I think I enjoyed playing SMB3 more. The frog suit was great. Of course I'm just a Mario kind of guy. I even played the heck out of that "fake" Mario game, part 2. |
I loved Mario World because it constantly challenged me. It took me a while to get unlock every secret in the game, and to this day I still find myself playing it while all my other Mario games gather dust.
|
What?!? No Donkey Kong?
But it's Super Mario 3.... which is now available on GBA. |
Mario is the bad guy in one game. :)
|
What? No Mario is Missing?!?!
I chose Mario 3. I really feel it is the best Mario game made. Mario World finished second, and third would be Sunshine. |
Where's Mario KArt ;)
|
Hehe.. who voted for Lost Levels?
That game was tough.. even for me.. -eek- |
Like I said guys, just the main series, meaning just the Mario Bros. type game. So no Donkey Kong, Kart, RPG etc. :D
|
I would chose Mario 64, my 2nd favorite game of all time
just behind Irriating Stick!!!! Now how many here have played IS, I can see maybe pixyjunket playing it because he seems to have a more obscure taste in games. |
Yes.. I have played Irritating Stick, both the PS1 version and the Neo Geo version with the "special" controller.
|
What no Mario in time or Mario's Paint?
-confused- As much as I like both Super Mario World and Super Mario Brothers 3(couldn't get into the 64 version :( ), SMW was just too easy for me even the bonus levels in that had names like "radical, cool, awesome, groovy, etc.). While on the other hand Super Mario Brothers 3 offered more of a challenge. |
1.SMB3
2.SM64 3.SMW |
