Half Life Source Code Leaked! :(
Posted by CmdrTaco on Thursday October 02, @01:02PM from the i-hate-when-that-happens dept. Pyroman[FO] writes "There is the Half Life 2 source code floating around the net right now. It looks to be about a month old. There's no official word from Valve on the source code leak yet. Unfortunately those who want to use it to cheat already have it, we need to get the word to legitimate customers to educate them about the situation. " We all know what that means, there's going to be cheats and hacks even before the game is released. Not good, but maybe Valve can implement a real cheat prevention system now. |
Maybe someone can port it to Dreamcast ;)
Actually, hopefully they will release a Mac port this time! |
With steam, they will be able to weed out the cheats.
|
I hear Steam will also give you a footrub after every game, and walk your dog while you sleep.
|
Nah, the god damn glitch in it will make you drop your dog and shield and picking both up you will be forever immuned to any sort of dog walking.
The source code is out, so what. I think I have it on a cue. not sure if I should continue to download. it's not to big but still. just some more crap that will be fixed in the many patches that should be out when it's released. :p |
Holy crap, this is bad. Pretty much everything except assets (sound, art, etc.) is in this code. Steam code, engine code, netcode, Havok code, the CD verification system, etc. There are a ton of gaps and stuff that obviously hasn't been implemented indicating that this is old code, but still, this is probably going to push the game back even further. Suffice to say the people who think Valve leaked this intentionally are idiots.
Still, some interesting stuff in here. There's some TF2 related code, don't know if it actually contains TF2 but there are a lot of references to it including the classes (Chooser, Commando, Defender, Escort, Infiltrator, Medic, Pyro, Recon, Snapper, Sniper, Support) and weapons (Burst Rifle, Charged Plasma, Laser Rifle, Base Shield, Plasma Grenade Launcher, Combat Shield, Drain Beam, Flamethrower, Gas Can, Grenade Rocket, Limpet Mine, Mortar, Harpoon). Also looks like Counter-Strike code is in here as well, including references to something called an "assault suit" (which isn't in current versions of Counter-Strike). Also lots of cryptic references to "hl1." |
Is this what makes PC games better than console games? :D

Yes, but when was the last time you heard of it being leaked? I'm being silly, anyway.
|
how do you think ROMS come about? :p
all this means is there will be faster NO_CD cracks being produced. :p not to mention more mods. if another company uses the source code to work with the engine they will still need to pay off valve. |
Here's a look at the code for all you programmers out there:
10 SIN 20 GOTO HELL |
steam doesnt really do anything to prevent cheats. I was on a server called House of God 24/7dust which BTW I was always play there, anyways, I played there yesterday and there was 3 cheaters in there but they all had the same tag so I'm assuming they know each other but the thing is, they got in safe and clear and played about 30minutes until the admin came. 2 of them got banned and the 3rd left in the nick of time so he isnt banned.
Also, dont expect any multiplayer game to be proof of cheaters because were at the point now where cheats cant be prevented and will continue until the end of the world. As for the source code leaked, well, valve handed the modders the source code and so I wouldnt say its totally a leak since they did give the modders the source code to mod and we all know how leaked there mods are before the release date. Like Natural-Selection, I got it before a few days before the actual release day. Another example would be Halo (PC), people had the game before the actual release day. So it isnt surprising that it got leaked. |

So it isnt surprising that it got leaked. And this IS a big deal, as mentioned earlier there will be either ten trillion cheats out there by release day or Valve will push the game back to cheat-proof it (which is impossible, but I'm sure there's some things they could do that would make most cheats derived from this source code unworkable). Either way gamers get screwed. |

So it isnt surprising that it got leaked. that's warez. there's a difference with those as first there was a beta release of it and then there was the actual full game release. that happens when someone gets the game and leaks it out to the masses. this on the other hand is just source. modders have had the source code for a while modding and all. as for the cheats. STEAM had some glitches itself. one is the shield glitch. you drop your shield and pistol and pick them up and you would be able to run around with the gun out and the shield protecting you. here are some pictures of the source code people have downloaded http://www.dirtysolicitor.com/t0y/ pictures 001-006 steam for the most part will look through for cheats. nothing can be a hundred percent free, but it can be close. steam should be that closer then the WAN system they were using. |
Why does Battlefield 1942 not have this problem?
I never really got into Counterstrike because of all the cheating I would hear about. I play BF1942 in a clan and there are only a couple of things like being able to see the other team on the mini-map (well, that's a bad one I guess) and some other exploits that are more like bugs than cheats. But nothing like wall-hacks and auto-aim, as far as I know. At least, I've never seen it, and I play on random pubs several times a week. Just wondering how it is kept out. |
aww man, that sucks. :( I hope they don't delay the game AGAIN.
How the hell does a source code like this get leaked anyway? Did the janitor pull a fast one on them or something? I guess we'll probably never know but its mind boggling. |
it wont delay the game. this source is about a month old and not much can really be done with it that it would need a re-write.
how do they get leaked? just someone lets to much info go or leaves a disc in the wrong place. |
HL2 wont get delayed again. The only reason it was delayed because of the holiday season coming up which means more money.

This has just not been the best couple of days for me or for Valve. Yes, the source code that has been posted is the HL-2 source code. Here is what we know: 1) Starting around 9/11 of this year, someone other than me was accessing my email account. This has been determined by looking at traffic on our email server versus my travel schedule. 2) Shortly afterwards my machine started acting weird (right-clicking on executables would crash explorer). I was unable to find a virus or trojan on my machine, I reformatted my hard drive, and reinstalled. 3) For the next week, there appears to have been suspicious activity on my webmail account. 4) Around 9/19 someone made a copy of the HL-2 source tree. 5) At some point, keystroke recorders got installed on several machines at Valve. Our speculation is that these were done via a buffer overflow in Outlook's preview pane. This recorder is apparently a customized version of RemoteAnywhere created to infect Valve (at least it hasn't been seen anywhere else, and isn't detected by normal virus scanning tools). 6) Periodically for the last year we've been the subject of a variety of denial of service attacks targetted at our webservers and at Steam. We don't know if these are related or independent. Well, this sucks. What I'd appreciate is the assistance of the community in tracking this down. I have a special email address for people to send information to, [email protected]. If you have information about the denial of service attacks or the infiltration of our network, please send the details. There are some pretty obvious places to start with the posts and records in IRC, so if you can point us in the right direction, that would be great. We at Valve have always thought of ourselves as being part of a community, and I can't imagine a better group of people to help us take care of these problems than this community. Gabe |
Don't they have a proxy server that all the employees machines sit behind?
|
Why did Valve have the source code available on computers that are connected to the Internet?
|
...

Who's Gabe?
