We've managed to get an official statement from Valve Software on the release date of Half-Life 2 being pushed back. Here is word that I got directly from Doug Lombardi of Valve Software. Valve seems to have been having some mail issues so you may not see this on other sites, however we can confirm with absolute certainty that this is valid:

The previously announced September 30th release date for Half-Life 2 is being pushed back. We are currently targeting a holiday release, but do not have a specific "in-store" date to share at this time. We will release that information as soon as we have confirmed a new date.

As more information becomes available from Valve we'll have it here for you.

:(

I'm not to surprised since it's only a week till the 30th and still no anouncment of gold status, and little to no promotions in stores.

So if you gotten your upgrades for your PC's... well you didn't wait long enough. ;) I'm sure by the time it is released, the prices on gear will drop a great deal. with AMD 64 just anounced today I'm sure old amd processors will be dirt cheap.

In any case. I'm bummed, but not surprised. then again, this isn't the final word. Who knows if this is legit or not.. we can only wait till gabe himself speaks.

...and nobody is shocked.

Actually...

When I last checked the computers at my former gamestop job, the release date was 2/2/03. which was the same date as halo 2 and many many many other titles. But I kinda knew it was gonna be held back already. Something that amount of graphic detail needs to be carefully done.

Not to mention STEAM still has some major issues to be fixed. Still though, you shouldn't always trust dates from EB, Gamestop or any other store. or else we will be seeing Duke Nukem forever in 2004...

ClarkKentKY 09-24-03 01:23 AM

Not surprised. Doom 3 still has at least one more delay too.

More time to stall that much-needed upgrade :)

fumanstan 09-24-03 01:28 AM

I don't think anyone is really surprised... except for how long its taken for Valve to admit that the game has been delayed. Something tells me that the so called bundle with ATI's new video card is going to end up being a coupon... that takes 4 to 6 weeks :)

Fine by me... I thought we already knew this anyway.

Groucho 09-24-03 07:02 AM

I understand that the guys at Valve saw Vietcong and realized that they had a lot of work to do if they want to play with the big boys. In fact, they scrapped the whole game and are starting from scratch.

Trigger 09-24-03 07:06 AM

Well... have you played Vietcong? Of course they'd scrap HL2 - it sucked and wasn't original... especially compared to Vietcong... which had trees.

Centurion 09-24-03 09:32 AM

Well, I'm sure we all had our doubts about the 30th.
This is both good and bad news:

BAD: we'll have to continue waiting this one out. This is a highly anticipated title in my household; one I'm willing to build a new PC just to play. (I'm actually waaay overdue anyway):D

GOOD: the more time goes by, the more time we have for computer components to drop in price...and with the AMD Athlon 64 hitting the market (Newegg already has this listed on their homepage) Intel looks to launch their successor to the existing 478 socket Pentium 4. This means the aforementioned P4's go down in price.

CharlesC 09-24-03 09:49 AM

Yup. I am both happy and sad also for the same reasons.

Well, hopefully it will be out in November some time.

Yep!

For me the glass is half full. I'll eventually be able to afford something that will play HL2 decently. Hopefully it will be delayed until after all of the good Q4 DVDs are released.

I'm hoping late November or December...so I can spend plenty of quality time with Call of Duty (the demo was great despite the lack of jungle environments).

Jackskeleton 09-24-03 02:18 PM

I would figure that at the latest, they want to get it in before Black friday.

Have you tried Vietcong?

Outlaw 09-24-03 06:41 PM

I actually thought this was coming out (I don't follow pc games very often). Announcing a delay one week before release date seems too close and kinda underhanded to me. Is this sort of thing common in the PC market place?

Jackskeleton 09-24-03 07:00 PM

Delays are very common. we usually face atleast 2 of them per game. :p it's not very often that it's this close. but it has been unofficially known that it might face a delay when it did't go gold a week or so back, then again Universal has been claiming it's been delayed for sometime now.

glassdragon 09-24-03 08:14 PM

i wouldn't believe it myself till i see it on their official steam site...
They've already denied a few of the stories on the sites, mainly the gamershell ones
