Playing Maximo and loving it.. anything similar?
So my friend let me borrow his PS2 to play Maximo and I'm enjoying it a LOT. It really reminds me of a lot of the games I used to love back in the day like the Wonder Boy series (Wonder Boy in Monster Land, Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap, Wonder Boy in Monster World)..
I'm looking for more games like this.. action/adventure/platform style games that have an "arcade" feel to them. I'm pretty sure I'll eat anything up that involves killing monsters with a sword and collecting money to buy new equipment. So can anybody make any recommendations? I own a Gamecube and an Xbox, but I do have access to a PS2 when I need one.. please help.. this is an addiction I've been missing for a long time and it needs fuel!!

Perhaps this goes without saying, but Maximo is a 3d rendering of the "Ghosts and Goblins" series of games...so obviously those would be my first recommendation if you haven't played them.

Yup.. I do know that. (Come on, shouldn't you know by now I'm the old school king around here?)
I have played all 3 Ghosts and Goblins games, but they are very different than what Maximo is and what I'm looking for. They're all excellent games (even if a little insane on the diffuculty level), but they are missing the "adventure" touch. They're all pretty straightforward action/platformers. I guess it's hard to put into words, but yeah..

Okay, then:
Some games that aren't necessarily like Maximo, but can be described as "involves killing monsters with a sword and collecting money to buy new equipment."
Diablo series
Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance
Gauntlet: Dark Legacy
And for the truly old school gamer:
NetHack
ADOM

The thing I loved about Maximo was that it was HARD. I remember playing games back in the late 80's/early 90's on my NES and practically screaming at the game because of my frustration with how difficult it is. Nowadays you can cheat your way through practically any game that is released, so it was refreshing to see a new game that was intentionally difficult and intended to challenge the player. As for anything similar, I can't think of anything on the next gen systems, but as mentioned above you might definitely want to check out the game that inspired Maximo--Ghosts & Goblins.

I think of all mentioned, Rygar is probably closest to what I'm looking for (another PS2 only! )
Yeah, Maximo is pretty diffucult, but not in a "bad programming" or "cheap computer" way.. it's a beautiful homage to the day when you had to work to get good at a game, not download a FAQ and just do what it tells you.

Boss battles ruined Rygar for me. I couldn't see my character at least 50% of the time fighting the last boss. That's just bad game design right there. Combat was fun(besides bosses), enemies were somewhat repetitive. Doesn't really give off the same vibe as Maximo, at least for me. Honestly, I can't think of any other game I've played this generation that gave me the same feelings as Maximo besides maybe Devil May Cry 1.
You should rent Drakan:The Ancients Gate for the PS2. Nothing like Maximo, but it's alot of fun.
