Gamecube going to $99

I found a pic of a leaked Walmart ad dropping the GC to $99. From the DVD's shown it's an ad for Oct. 7th

That is very interesting news. If someone wanted the best deal possible, they could buy the gc bundled with the GBA player now at BB then take the receipt back with that ad when it came out and get the difference (maybe plus 10%). You could end up with the bundle for $95!

I still can't believe they want to sell the GC and GBA SP for the same price.

Gizmo 09-13-03 10:16 AM

I don't think that Best Buy deal is possible since its a promotion (that has now ended BTW).

SpaceBoy 09-13-03 10:35 AM

Decker I never thought of it before, that is nuts, selling the advance and cube at same price. I want an advance, but want it for cheaper :)

GatorDeb 09-13-03 10:40 AM

Decker that wouldn't work since the packages are not the same. They're going to say that you got the GBA player so they can't pricematch it.

evenflow 09-13-03 10:42 AM

That's it! $99.99 is the price of DOOM! Say goodbye to Nintendo as a console maker. ;)

random123 09-13-03 10:52 AM

nice price, but it doesn't really matter. you've been able to get a free $50 game since feb so it was already $100 if you planned on buying metroid prime which most people probably did

It's all what the market will bear. If they are selling the GBA SPs for $99 briskly (and they are), then there's no reason to drop the price; and I don't expect them to. But it is kinda weird to see them at the same price point. I'd imagine that will give the big N a huge boost in GC sales; we'll see.

As far as the PM, you might be right, Deb, but you never know since the player is supposedly "free" with the system and the price of the system drops. It's likely a YMMV thing. If someone wanted to try it, they could always keep their system unopened, wait for the price drop and see. If the PM is refused, just return the system and buy a cheaper one. It's all going to happen within the next 30 days. If I wanted to get a GC system very soon, that's what I'd do, but it does take a little more work and a couple of trips to BB.
I know I've seen some bundles there fairly recently, but every store is different. Heck, I found an Xbox bundled with the Sega GT/ JSRF last week at Target after I'd spent months looking unsucessfully for one and already gave up (D'oh!).

Doctorwho 09-13-03 11:52 AM

I wonder if this means that gamestop will sell their used gamecubes for cheaper.

The gamestop in my town is selling them used for 69.99, because they have competitors around. But they dont ever have any in stock and other gamestops are selling them for 89.99 used.

I went to a used bookstore and they had a gamecube for 74.95 used, with no warranty or anything.

Maybe with this new price it would be better to just pick up a new one.

And is that pic a real pic or just something photoshopped. I wouldnt be suprised if this guy just photoshopped it, considering no other videogame sites posted it.

What makes me wonder about the ad is the Rollback symbol above the GC. That makes me think its just a Walmart thing. Or does Walmart normally take credit for lowering prices when the MSRP drops?

ben12 09-13-03 01:53 PM

Wow, here's an even cheaper advertised price I found in the ad for Oct. 14!!

$50 is about what that p.o.s is worth.

Spoiler:
JUST KIDDING, calm down.

;)

LOL

I wish I could PM to the $99 price, but I got my Cube in late July. I still got a great deal though. $160 for the system, and 2 games (Zelda, and Animal Crossing). One of the best purchases I ever made.

:D

Except that Metroid Prime has been available for $20 for the last six months at Blockbuster.

nickdawgy 09-13-03 04:06 PM

not for me, none of my local Blockbusters sell new games. I had to get my Metroid Prime for $26 used at ebgames. Worth it, though, awesome game.

:D

CreatureX 09-13-03 04:24 PM

Well I hope the first ad is real not a photoshop. I would love to buy a few more GCs, especially with all the LAN compatible games coming soon.

Wal-Mart always takes credit for MSRP drops...

A lot of stores do. All of the price drops I've seen advertised are done so to imply that that particular store was teh only one doing it.

Outlaw 09-14-03 01:57 PM

Thats pretty hot! If that ad is real then it looks like IGN may have been right. I know a lot of people who were waiting for this price drop.

I think that ad might be real, if you look on the panel above it I think there is a picture of the 2 Fast 2 Furious DVD which isn't out yet AFAIK.

TNDVDFAN 09-14-03 02:10 PM

I work for Wal-Mart and have not heard about a price drop on the GC. We usually get our ads in the store
2 weeks before they are sent out to the public. I will try to verify tomorrow at work if the ad is real.

BigPete 09-14-03 05:58 PM

You guys do know that most Blockbusters have been selling brand new, sealed in the box Gamecubes for $99 and XBoxes and PS2s for $149 for like 3 weeks now, right?

The catch is to find a BBV that has the systems in stock, but once you've done that, you're golden.

Corky Roxbury 09-14-03 08:19 PM

I dont think the ad is for the OCt. 7th because 2 fast, 2 furiour comes out on the 30th of sept, so hopefully EB will have used systems for around $70, I only want the new SW game, and Wrestlemania 19

Tiger Woods 2004 is also in the ad and I think that comes out around the 25th. This is probably an ad for the 28th of September.

Michael Corvin 09-14-03 09:30 PM

As far as price matching, I thought BB only had a 14 day window of opportunity vs. CC 30 days. At least that is what an employee told me 2 weeks ago when I asked.

Not right. It's 30 days. There's only a 14 day return window on certain items like digital cameras, camcorders and notebook PC's. I have no idea why.
