So I rented Splinter Cell on PS2 finally...
Yep, you heard me. I FINALLY am playing this blockbuster game. Splinter Cell is the only game that made me want an Xbox back in the day. I went to Hollywood Video looking to pick up the Gamecube version, thinking it would have better graphics, but all they had was the PS2 version. I was skeptical, but picked up the PS2 version anyways.
After completeing the first mission and part of the second, I can safley say that the game is great on PS2. The gfx are VERY good, it even has most of that great lighing from the Xbox version. Now, I have seen the Xbox version in action, and YES it does look better, but I was surprised at how well they did on the PS2 port. I just thought I would toss an opinion out there....enjoy. P.S. My only gripe about the game so far is no friggin' ammo anywhere :( |
There's no ammo because it's not meant to be a shoot-em-up... it's meant to be a stealth game. All the hype aside, I think Hitman 2 pulled it off better, and with more flexibility.

Hitman2 gives you a lot more leeway to improvise.
Splinter Cell needs a little tighter presentation but it is an excellent game none the less. |
Ugh, I hated the Hitman games. Played them both for about 10mins, never could do 1 objective on the first mission. The game gives you no direction and its impossibly hard...but that's just me.

Thats funny, I found Hitman too easy. The fact that you can throw stealth out the window and barge in guns in hand killing everything in sight to pass an objective killed the game for me.

I'll third that. Hitman 2 was way too hard for me. They should reallly have some degree of a learning curse so you can get past the first level without much problem. I found SC much more accessable in the early going.

The PS2 version is nice, although the lighting effects didn't quite make it over intact. I was more surprised by the the reduced geometry - I noticed lots of bookshelves and other objects inside of rooms were removed. Textures were more repetitive - some of the rooms featured a single texture tiled on all surfaces where the Xbox version had different textures on each surface. I assume both of those changes were made due to memory constraints.
The reduced lighting effects and textures are things you wouldn't notice without playing the other version. |
