Is a memory card NEEDED to save games on Xbox?

Okay, I'm thisclose to picking up an Xbox and KOTOR, and I'm trying to figure out how much my total's going to be. Probably a stupid question to the Xbox crowd, but I've got to ask--with the Xbox having a HD, do games give you the ability to store saves there? I saw Xbox memory cards at the store and wondered if I'd really need one, or if that was just an option of transferring a save game to take it to another Xbox.

Thanks

No you don't need one. :D

You got it. They're just for transferring data. For all practical purposes, the hard drive has infinite size for game saves; you'll NEVER fill it just with them.

You only need a memory card for the xbox if you want to copy your live stuff or game saves to another xbox.

That's what I thought.

Thanks everyone!

I've never bought one. A lot of games don't even support it. Down the line I might consider one to backup some saves.

although games might not support it, xbox allows you to copy directly to the card.

it's not required, but i used it to back up my motogp2 rider b/c it took forever to max him out. and i've heard horror stories of people accidentally deleting them.

still, if i were buying right now, i wouldn't get the card.

The biggest use for a memory card is to copy your LIVE account information onto. If you ever delete/remove/lose/break your account, having a memory card you make you very happy.

The only other time I've used it was to copy saves from on xbox to another.

I could not copy KOTOR onto my card. It gave me the delete option only when I went to the saves on the HD. Is there another way of doing it?

As of right now there is no way to save a game of KOTOR on a memory card. There is only a delete option since the game save file is about 25MB every time you save it.

it's got a 10 gig harddrive in it... you should never need a memory except for the above reasons :) my roomie has ripped like 100 songs and we have massive saves on the box from the 12 games he owns and it still says 50000+ blocks remaining

RoQuEr 08-02-03 06:13 AM

I think the xbox has 900,000 blocks total.

KOTOR saves take up 60,000 blocks on my Xbox though, so I doubt even 1 save game would fit on a memory card.

I was pleasantly surprised to find out after buying it how many songs you can store and not even in the least be worried about taking up too much space.

Huh?

I have 4 saves total on KOTOR and they are only 6,407 blocks total on my Xbox.

However I was just curious at how big the Mechassault file was since we've had all those downloads and it was 12,545 blocks.
