i think by far my favorite was Warsong, on genesis. If you're lucky enough to get your hands on this game, try it out, i think it is the most similar to advanced wars, this game is awesome.

I would also second (or third) Alpha Centauri, but X-Com was still better.
Sorry, Military Madness fans... here's the real winner.

Shogun: Total War (and possibly the other total war games -- though Shogun is the only one I've played) totally rocks too. The main game is turn based - and VERY strategic, but the combat is real time and a lot of fun too -- kinda like Myth, but on a much larger scale.

Warsong was fun... unfortunately, they never brought any of the other Langrisser games out here. Loved the artwork, though.

An often overlooked PS1 gem is Brigandine, which involves more monster battles. Master of Monsters was also good in it's day.

I'm more of a console player than a computer player (it stems from my dad drilling into me at an early age that computers were for working)... but I couldn't get into the PS1 version of X-com. It was one of the earliest games for the system, and the interface was clunky because of the PS1 controls, but I didn't have the same excitement as Military Madness or it's ilk.

Shining Force was a great series on the Genesis too.

I'm open to looking at some Turn based games on PC, as long as they're not too graphics intensive (I haven't updated my graphics card in a while). So the HMM series is good? I've seen Shogun for cheap. Anything else?

Age of Wonders is turn-based. It's worth checking out.

I had no idea AOW was turn-based. I ignored it because all the other "Age Of..." games I've seen were RTS and I didn't care for them. I'll have to check it out.

I don't know if you'll care but there is a new version of Age of Wonders coming out in September. It's called AOW: Shadow Magic. It has many improvements, including one of the most requested features, a random map generator. There is a short article in the August 2003 Computer Gaming World on page 53.

Alas, the unwashed masses who never experienced the greatness that was the TG-16/Duo/Express will not have experienced this game. (Nor other greats, like Devil's Crush - *still* one of the best console pinball games ever, and the great Bonk platformer games, etc....)

is this for the original, or the sequel?

AOW 2 is great BTW. I've been playing a PBEM game all summer long.

Others titles nobody mentioned:

Fallout Tactics: I didn't care for this, but If you like Xcom, you'll like this
Jagged Alliance 1 & 2 : Xcom with attitude.... and real weapons
Galactic civilizations : single player only.

Wasn't Nectaris released for PS1 in 1999? I think it was even a budget title... still a great game.

Nectaris is still one of my favorite games ever. It was everything that Military Madness was, but just added some 3D graphics to the battles. Great soundtrack too.
