Beginning of the end for the 'cube?
From A-Vault
Acclaim Reduces GameCube Support Acclaim has told Reuters it no longer intends to develop titles based on new properties for Nintendo's GameCube. The decision comes from concerns Acclaim had regarding the sales performance of the third-place console. Acclaim said it will complete the titles it already has in development and will continue making games based on established ideas. Thoughts? |
As long as Nintendo makes games for it they will have good games on the GC.
What good acclaim titles will we miss anyway? |
Acclaim hasn't put out a decent game in years, and really only a handful of AAA titles during their entire lifespan.
This will have no effect on Nintendo. No one is going to buy any console for an Acclaim game, not to mention that I don't think Acclaim has done any exclusives this generation anyway. |
 Everytime something even remotely negative happens, the haters come out "This is the end of the Gamecube!" Give it up, folks. We get it...you don't like cartoony games because you are oh-so mature. Good for you...give yourself a pat on the back. But wishful thinking alone doesn't make the Sega comparison come even close to being true.
|
It is Acclaim, I wish they would stop making games for everyone. I think Gamecube is lucky not to have their "support" to pollute the library of games :)

Acclaim....

I think most of you are missing the significance of a company such as Acclaim dropping support. I don't think this spells doom for Nintendo but Acclaim was verbally one of Nintendo's biggest backers and one of the few developers that developed long into the death of the N64. That they are choosing to jump ship is more indicitive of future trouble that Nintendo may have with other publishers that aren't as staunch backers of Nintendo.
Not doom and gloom for Nintendo but not good new either. Actually if you ignore the only thing nintendo has going for it (gameboy) the sega comparison is very valid. Virtual Boy, N64DD (Sega CD), N64 (Saturn), Gamecube (Dreamcast). Although not as grand failures as the Sega enterprises Nintendo has been slowly slipping. Do I see them going the way of Sega? Not really. At least not for two or more generations, but interesting none the less. |
What if Nintendo dropped Acclaim and this is their way of saving face?

Exactly. Oh God the cube is gonna drop in sales because of Acclaim's strong line up being pulled back. AHHHHH ...please.. BMX XXX ..the true last ditch effort to boost efforts is 8.99 at EBGames and still .. who is buying it? ..
|
The N64 sold fairly well, much better than the Saturn. The 64DD was never even released in the US, so that doesn't compare with the Sega CD either. Sega released the CD drive here and pissed a lot of people off when they stopped supporting it.
That is the main difference between Nintendo and Sega, Nintendo still has a loyal fanbase, while Sega alienated theirs by not supporting the Sega CD, 32x and Saturn for more than 2 or 3 years. This kept many from buying the Dreamcast even though it was a great system and sealed their doom. |

Just like Sega, MS is the one who has posted nothing but losses since day one for the Xbox. Just like Sega, the losses continue to grow for Xbox every year. MS has even begun to lay off some of the Japanese Xbox division...just like Sega. |

Acclaim isn't too much to be worried about but with them and EA dropping their sports line-up, you have to concerned about the trend here. Next-gen games cost a lot to produce so if a 3rd party developer doesn't see the sales are there to justify the cost then they'll make tough decisions. Ninty makes great games for the Cube but no other 3rd party is really well committed to the system. Long term this could be a problem.
|
Yeah, Acclaim stinks. I'm more worried about the importance being placed on the "system link" between gamecube and gameboy in new games. That is something that I have no interest in at all (and I have a GBA!).
|
EA is still releasing their games on the Cube. It's Sega that pulled their sports lineup from the cube.
As for the system link, who cares? It's just a neat bonus for those interested in it. |
I was not using direct relations but I was merely showing a downward trend. The 64DD cost a lot of money in R&D so it should be included. The N64 and Gamecube have alienated many old Nintendo fans from the SNES days, much like Sega did to its Genisis followers. But even more scary for Nintendo is that it has been alienating itself from its publishers for many years now. I said that it could be 2 or more generations before they go under if they don't turn things around. If Nintendo looses a lot of its current gen support, then next gen support will be harder to come by. With each passing generation the list of third parties developing for Nintendo systems will get lower and lower. Eventually a critical point will be reached where not enough people will buy Nintendo systems to play only Nintendo games.
I believe the Gamecube was much like the Dreamcast in that it was the final system that could stop a downward trend. And the Saturn and N64 are comparable because they started the downward trend. Publishers were waiting for nintendo to redeem themselves with the Gamecube and it didn't happen. The only major difference is that Nintendo is more financially sound and will take a lot more time to leave the arena. I'm not really sure if I believe nintendo will ever leave the system wars, and I know I don't want them to. But with history against them it looks like they are a slave to time. |
Falcon, despite alienating many developers with the N64, a lot of them have come back to Nintendo to develop for the Gamecube, notably Capcom and Square.
|
very true, and capcom has been selling very well. Square hasn't produced a whole lot yet but just having them in the corner helps. I guess most of this will play out when developers start choosing their corners for the next generation.
|
Oh man, this post should win the Most Misleading Thread Title Ever award.
|
If I owned a console it would be the Gamecube.
I think they will have an audiance for quite a while, afterall, it's the choice of irresponsible parents who want to keep their kids ammused ;) Hey, if Nintendo can survive after making the N64 (look everyone! it's the same engine... but but.. this time there are new gun models! it's a revolution!) I think they can survive a C grade publisher like Acclaim reducing the games being made :P |
You mean we won't get anymore versions of Turok on the GC. Damn.
. . . . . On that note, such a sad thing to see such a great game dissove into a franchise that leaves a bad taste in your mouth. Acclaim:  |
Back on topic, looks like i won't be able to play hits like BMX XXX2 on my Gamecube.
|
This is hardly the beginning of the end... I agree with everyone else here in that they won't really miss Acclaim too much - however, I do think that the lack of third party support is going to eventually be their demise.
