Any deals on the Gameboy Player?

I've been looking forward to this thing for months but I hate paying full price. Both Target and CC have it for $50. I assume BB has it for the same. Has anyone seen any deals? If not this week then what about next? Any help is appreciated.

chopchop27 06-22-03 10:13 PM

I've read online that its going to be about 35 bucks at Costco stores, but I havent been able to confirm that.

harperr 06-23-03 08:44 AM

On costco.com, it's listed as $35.99 + $4.98 shipping. If you're not a member, add 5% to the $36.

fujishig 06-23-03 09:30 AM

Hmm... I've never seen Costco sell a peripheral, and no console without some game. I'm surprised they don't jack it up to 60 and include a GBA game with it. I'll definitely get if from them if the 36 dollar price is true...

Goldberg74 06-23-03 10:29 AM

I ordered it from EBGames and hopefully would get the 20% back... with free 2-day shipping. If it doesn't happen, then I'll drop by Costco.

Any idea if it will be in stores today or tomorrow? Nintendo seems to have done their usual "advertise the shipping date".

Doug Schiller 06-23-03 12:24 PM

Circuit City by me had them out yesterday.

It is a great deal if you don't already have a GameCube (free Player with purchase).

Doug

They're not coming out until tomorrow around me.

Outlaw 06-23-03 03:59 PM

Shipping date is 6/23. I checked but there's none here at BB or Target yet. No deals in this weeks sales ads yet AFIK.

cduniverse.com had it at $39 last week but now its back up to $48. I held off hoping to find a better price so congrats if you got in on that.

Anyone have an order ship from costco.com yet? there's no store close to me and i've never ordered from the store.

The ads I saw (all for $50 or as freebie instead of game w/ Cube purchase) in the Sunday paper stated it would be available 6/25 (Wednesday).

jimbo504 06-23-03 07:55 PM

missiondirect.com had it mispriced a couple of weeks ago at $27.XX, but since have jacked the price up to $48. My order status still says the misprice :-D so hopefully I will get it for under $35 shipped.

Goldberg74 06-23-03 08:33 PM

None at the 1604 and 281 Costco, just checked this evening...

This is a serious question - what is the allure of the Gameboy player? The graphics for the GBA are great for a handheld, but I for one won't want to see them on my 27" screen - you'd think they'd look bad. So why do people want to play GBA/GBC/GB on their big-screen TVs?

I can barely see the screen on the GBA. It's so small...

I don't think the quality is going to be that much hindered... it'd be like playing a SNES game? (assuming) I haven't had a chance to purchase a GB player for GCN yet, but I do plan to.

From what I understand, the resolution of the GBA games are fine for TV size, it's the GBC/GB games that will suffer from resolution... it's like playing them on a GBA, screen res is different.

just a thought, but in short, it's i just can't see the damn small screen

GatorDeb 06-23-03 11:03 PM

So it's for people who love the games but don't want to play on a handheld? Now THAT does make a lot of sense. You get a whole different library opened up.

There was a similar player back in the day for the SNES that let you play the old first generation Gameboy games. We had one and really liked it. No, the graphics aren't the greatest, but unless you blow it up on a 60" screen, it's workable. We've got our Gamecube hooked up to the 20" in the bedroom, and that should look fine.

Josh H 06-24-03 10:32 AM

I haven't used it personally, but reviews from sites/people who imported it said the games look fine on a TV as long as you leave it in the default framed setting that doesn't use the whole screen and maintains the proper aspect ratio. If you use the zoom feature and blow it up it will look funky as you will be screwing up the aspect ratio.

For me the appeal is that I play my GBA at home 99% of the time and I play it quite a bit as I prefer 2D gaming to 3D gaming and it's really the only system getting good 2D releases. I'd much prefer to play the games on my 27" wega with a Wavebird, rather than the small GBA screen and uncomfortable controls (especially the GBA shoulder buttons).

gcribbs 06-24-03 12:08 PM

Since I do not own a GBA I'm looking forward to getting this since I can pick up some new games for my GC.

Kellehair 06-24-03 07:23 PM

Anyone seen next week's ads?

GatorDeb 06-24-03 07:53 PM

Jeeze now you people have me wanting to get one... but it's $40-$50... now I'm itching to play Pokemon and Golden Sun on the big(ger) screen. Sigh :) To buy or not to buy...

Gizmo 06-24-03 08:19 PM

Picked my up today! AWESOME!

We also hooked one up at work (I work in a videogame store) for the little kiddies to play.

Josh H 06-24-03 10:53 PM

Here's a bit from a FAQ on the GB Player from www.planetgamecube.com that should alleviate any concerns about all the games looking crappy on a tv. It does seem to be a little hit or miss though.

What is the picture quality like?

Unlike the Wide Boy Advance (basically the GBA hardware crammed into an N64 cart) that developers have been using for years, the Game Boy Player’s picture is surprisingly silky and smooth. You would expect the games to look awful when enlarged from the low resolution of the GBA, but that just isn’t the case. Many games like Metroid Fusion look like they were designed to be displayed on a television. Not all games turn out great though. While some games shine with wonderful detail, others like Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow title are clearly designed for the small screen, and aren’t as impressive when using the GBP.

Superboy 06-25-03 03:54 AM

Okay, i take back every bad thing i said about the Gameboy Player. It's awesome, and anyone who owns a Gamecube should definitely get one. The graphics are good, but as the above post states, some games look better than others. The part that really makes it for me is the sound. No more crappy GBA speaker - the sound is truly amazing. Some of the music in certain games stands out so much now i'm not sure if i'm playing the same game! the sound effects are much better now too. Now all i need is a Hori controller and i'm ready to go.

Don't expect a price drop or special with the GB Player - it's hardware, and hardware is almost NEVER on sale, and at the most you're going to save $10.

jimbo504 06-25-03 08:18 AM

w00t!!! just got an email from missiondirect.com saying that my order shipped today, and they charged my card for the misprice!!!! $34.95 shipped, can't beat that :-D !!!
