Star Wars Galaxies - Review posted
I didn't post in the other thread as some people might not read it.
As I had said (and people not believed me), the cost per month is 15$. The NDA is still (amazingly enough at this point) in place so I won't discuss the game yet. http://www.gamespot.com/pc/rpg/starw...s_6030154.html Since LucasArts delayed Star Wars Galaxies in March, the publisher hasn't publicly discussed a release schedule for the game. The company has today revealed that the game is set to launch sooner than anyone might have expected--next week. Galaxies' pricing and subscription plans were also announced today, and the game's standard monthly fee will start a notch higher than what's charged for other online games. The month-to-month fee is $14.99, and there are three longer-term subscription plans that reduce this base rate: the three-month plan is $14 per month, the six-month plan is $13 per month, and the 12-month plan is $12 per month. "The current subscription plan for Star Wars Galaxies is reflective of the game's high quality and competitive with the current marketplace," said Simon Jeffery, president of LucasArts. "No matter which subscription option players choose, they'll be able to look forward to a constant stream of dynamic content and features, first-rate customer service, and much, much more." Star Wars Galaxies has a suggested retail price of $49.95, which includes a 30-day subscription. LucasArts will also release a $79.95 special collector's edition that comes with a book of game-related art, in-game wearable items for character customization, a pewter figurine, a lapel pin and patch, and a signed manual. For more details on Star Wars Galaxies, check out our previous coverage of the game. |
Holy crap. 15.00 a month! Thats a whole lot for one game.
|
What I want to know is that 15$, is it a new standard they wish to establish, or is it just your basic Lucas greediness. Wait a few months and you'll have 20 different releases of the game.
For SWG, take 22$ and play EQ, EQII, Planetside and whatever other titles Sony includes in the package. |
Well hey, I'll be the first to say I was wrong heh. I cannot believe they are asking 15 a month for this game. I was gonna get it and play it sparingly with my old EQ guildmates that were gonna play it, but forget it. I'm not paying 15 a month for this :(
|
Assuming the game is fun, I don't think $15 a month is a lot to ask...I spend that much going to see a movie that lasts 2 hours if you factor in the popcorn and the soda.
Hey, if it sucks, I'll cancel my subscription and cut my losses...but hell, I'm paying $60 a month for cable, I can pay $15 a month for an online interactive Star Wars game. |
For $15 a month, the game better come hand-delivered by a model wearing that Princess Leia bikini!

I only like to pay for my games once.

What dos NDA mean? |
National Dance Association

NDA = Non Disclosure Agreement
The beta players are NOT allowed to discuss the game in detail. $15.00 a month is pricey in my opinion. I guess if I only played Galaxies and no other games, it's not too bad. But I may take a pass on this. Also to the person, who mentioned SONY's group pricing for their online games,(that package price of $20+) I believe the games for that pricing did NOT include StarWars Galaxies. Oh well, I'll let things shake out before I decide to get it. If it's like Everquest and you have devote all of your FREE time to level up, I guess I will have to miss out on being a Jedi! :) |
No worries, Jedi Academy is on it's way. ;)

Here's another vote for sitting this one out, at least at the beginning. I'm going to see how things pan out. I've heard from here and other sites this game isn't ready for release. I'm going to wait till most of the bugs are out, if I play
In the mean time, I'll get Star Wars: KOTOR next month to get my Star Wars fix. |
From Gamers.com:
Month-to-month: $14.99 per month. Three-month subscription: $14 per month. Six-month subscription: $13 per month. 12-month subscription: $12 per month. The especially well-heeled or committed may also pick up a special collector's edition of the game for $79.95, including a book of artwork, a pewter figurine, a lapel pin and patch set, a signed manual, and extra in-game items. "The release of Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided is a truly defining moment for LucasArts and we're confident the game will meet player's expectations," said LucasArts president Simon Jeffery. "The current subscription plan for Star Wars Galaxies is reflective of the game's high quality and competitive with the current marketplace. No matter which subscription option players choose they'll be able to look forward to a constant stream of dynamic content and features, first-rate customer service and much, much more." Hope that helps.. |
Totally agree with Jackskeleton. I know they put alot into the game and maintaining it online, but no game should charge for online play. I would rather pay 10 or 20 bucks more for it and be done with it. I have the C.E. pre-ordered, but might cancel it now. I might regret it because I love Star Wars, so we will see.
|
well, pay as you go is probably the most fair model... but $15??? c'mon, george... give me a discount, please!
how about a graduated scale... the more you play, the more you pay - up to $15/month. i'll pay 1 dolla' :D |
I'm not too big of a starwars fan, but from what I have heard from friends in the beta is that when this game "comes out" you will basically be paying to beta test it. Not that they said it was a bad game, but they said that it was unfinished for a game thats about to be released.
|
Yeah, their will be a lot of patches to this.

As I said in the other thread, there is another game that costs 15 dollars a month.
I agree with Jack though, while I understand the need for the monthly fee, I have problems paying for something like that since I don't really play games at a steady pace. If I was rich, then fine, but I'm not. |
Not to mention the price is just about half of a cable modem, I see no reason why I should pay more to play one game. Not to mention that it's a lot of hassel to try to fill that quota of how much you should play per month in order to get your dollars worth.
Not worth it. |

Well in MY opinion, it's not worth 15 a month. I've been playing it for a few weeks now, and I'm already bored. :( Also as stated above a few times, it's not at all close to being finished. But unfortunately, the release date of a game is never up to the devs. |
If there was an option for a free download of the game software, and they gave you a free trial for a week or two, I might try it out. That's what they are doing now for a lot of these games, for example The Sims Online and WW2 Online.
|
Well, Like I said...I'll pay for a few months and if I get bored with it, I'll cancel my membership and cut my losses.
What Lucas really needs to do here is gain the loyalty of his charter subscribers...something to the effect of yes, you'll pay $15 a month, but you'll LOCK IN that price for as long as you stay a member, and you'll get access to exclusives that people join later will not have...or something like that... |
