Anyone know how to fix an Xbox?
 

My Xbox was working fine one minute, but now it cannot read games, DVDs, or CDs. The Xbox says to make sure the disk isn't dirty and all that stuff. I think something is wrong with the laser in the Xbox since it cannot read any disks. Anyone have any suggestions on how to fix it? If I can't fix it, will selling it on ebay as a broken Xbox auction be worth it or is there a better place to sell it?

If it isn't that old I would also try calling Microsoft and see what they say.

If theres a problem with it you should be able to call Microsoft like MrPink said and tell them the problem with it and they will probably tell you to send it to them all you should pay is shipping the package off. In the box include a copy of the receipt and a note including the problem with it. They will send you a new one in a week or so. Thats what i did with my Dreamcast two years ago and i had to do that with my PS2 this year.

I had the extended service plan from MS. Sent it out via Airborne Express on Tuesday morning. Got a note on Thursday afternoon saying they had received it. Got a note Thursday night saying they had fixed it and sent it back. Got it back on Friday afternoon. All the same week. Very impressive service. That said, I haven't actually tried playing anything yet -- my problem was excessive dirty disk messages with brand new games. I did check to see that everything on my HD was still there.

I called MS on at least 3 occasions and each time they wanted me to pay $100 plus the shipping (and this was during the time when boxes even out of warranty were being fixed for free). I found another (and cheaper) way to fix my Xbox. Put a new Xbox DVD drive in there and it has worked like a dream ever since.

Most DDE (dirty, damaged errors) happen on the old Thomson DVD drives. There is a new Thomson out as well as 2 other DVD makers: Philips and Samsung. The look of the tray is the difference between the 3.

Where were you able to get a new Xbox DVD-ROM drive seperately? How much did it cost? I have 2 Xbox consoles and 1 of them has the DDE problem as well.

I had the same thing happen to my XBOX. I called Microsoft, politely explained the problem and they offered to fix it for free (I had no extended warranty, and the XBOX was almost 1 year old at this time). They sent an empty box, and I sent the XBOX in for repair. It was returned to me 5 days later and it's worked fine ever since. This took place about 3 months ago.

Give them a call and see what they say. You might need to call them back a couple times, I've heard situations where people were being charged $100 the first couple times they called and then suddenly it was being offered for free.

If you look hard enough you can find them. I think my total bill was about $55 (w/shipping) for my new drive. Prices vary, Samsung ones are very rare and go for quite a lot of money for instance.

I called 3 times...no dice. Not wanting to do it anymore I jumped on the opportunity to purchase a new drive from someone's fried Xbox. And it cost less than the $100+ MS was asking from me, plus I didn't get a new Thomson drive, which is generally what MS is doing when fixing them.
