NES Anthology...why WONT this happen?
 

My question is this:

Why won't Nintendo release an anthology of their NES hits onto a single (or multiple) next-gen titles? I know that you can find pirate game carts that contain multiple NES roms, but I'm talking about an official Nintendo product.

I'm SURE that they could make a bundle of money selling a gamecube disk or GBA cartridge that contained many complete NES titles, so why won't they do this? Are they waiting for something?

I've read that the game Wario Ware for GBA will contain mini-tasks from original NES games, but it will be a far cry from playing old school titles in all they're original glory.

Do you guys think we'll see a game like this? Why hasn't it happened already?

I don't see why they haven't done it either.

Nintendo may think the demand is not there for older games and not worth the expense to find out. I would like to see a compilation too.

Only company I know of doing this is Intellivision (for PSOne), Activision (for PS2) and obviosuly Sega with the different Smash Packs (One for Dreamcast, one for GBA, the other for Cube which is Sonic Mega Collection).

The E-reader is pretty much what you are talking about; re-releasing classics games on a newer system.

why do they or don't they do anything? Nintendo's like a woman - no rhyme or reason. :)

The thing is alot of the great NES games are third party titles.... So it is pretty hard to convince Capcom, Konami, Tecmo, etc to let Nintendo to publish a NES greatest hits with Castlevania, Contra, Mega Men, Final Fantasy, etc into 1 collection.

Of course, Nintendo can do a Mario/Zelda collection.

I was just talking yesterday with some friends along a similar topic. With the release of Zelda: OOT on GC with a progressive scan mode, why not other 64 titles? I would put up $10-$15 for a new progressive scan version of Mario Kart or Goldeneye. Blast Corps. is another one.

I would love one with the first 3 Mega Man games(NES) though. Back before it was Super Mega X, I have a robot dog, Battle Extreme Network Man. Talk about a series straying from the formula.

OR how about a Metroid, Zelda, Kid Icarus, Punch-Out, Excitebike, Mario 3 collection?

Nintendo has enough of it's own blockbuster titles to publish an amazing compilation. Konami should make one too, as should Capcom. Utimately I think the decision is made by Nintendo, since it's hardware is being emulated...

Get a dreamcast and NesterDC. All the NES games you want on 1 CD.

well, they did "release" 18 classic games including Mario bros, Zelda and donkey kong on Animal Crossing. Classic NES games are all over the place including the E-reader and they load them in many of the "new" games as well (even donkey kong 64 had classic donkey kong). Many of them are there, you just have to know where to look.

However, a compilation disk really would kick butt. I think one thing they are worried about if people would criticize them (and they would) about releasing "dated" 8-bit games on a compilation disk without touching them (which is what I would want, unadultarated 8bit goodness) and selling them. I think they would rather do what they have been doing and putting graphical touches on one game and selling it.

I would love to have the NES Mega Man games as well but What the heck are you talking about, straying from the series. the man still cannot aim his arm cannon. he still cannot duck. most of his games have the same exact formula to them. you still pick a level, you still fight a boss, you still use a certain weapon to beat the boss, you still die instantly after hitting spikes, you still upgrade your weapon with the bosses etc. How much more formulatic do you want it to be?

I would LOVE a NES collection, but only on the GBA. I think that my Nester DC does me good (I probably have almost every game)!

Can you save games with Nester DC?

I kinda doubt that the demand is really that high for NES games.

Aside from Mario, Zelda and Metroid there isn't too much first party stuff that will generate demand. Do most people know what Kid Icarus is or have an interest in a 15-year-old boxing game? Probably not. The Marios are all hitting GBA and Metroid was "free" so that only leaves the inevitable GBA remakes of the first 2 Zelda games.

Most people don't seem to care about 2D gaming. :(

The original 6 nes megaman games were released on PSX 1 but only in Japan. I know Konami has also relased collections on the Japanese PSX 1. The US video game market sucks!

They gave us Animal Crossing and Metroid is on Metroid Prime.


Its something. I kind of agree the demand is probably not there for a dedicated NES classics release.

This is actually possible. I won't go into details but I currently have around 300 NES games running on my GBA and soon on the GBA-SP.

Why make a complimation when they can sell it piece by piece on the GBA?

Well, I believe more people would be inclined to purchase one 30-40 dollar cartridge before they'd buy the e-reader and a bunch of cards....

How do those compilation disks sell, anyway? I always see them heavily discounted, so they can't be making that much money (though the ones collecting games of the 16 bit era, like Sonic, seem to do better).

Gaming's changed significantly since those times. I'd think that most of the hardcore gamers who fondly remember playing these games either still have their old systems, or have emulators to play them for "free." That being said, I like Nintendo's bundling of the original Metroid with Metroid Prime/Fusion, and I think "bonus" games packed in the same disk as the sequels would be neat. Much like the recent Ocarina of Time remake. Say, they remake Mario Kart 64 with the new Mario Kart that comes out.

Well I would love for this to happen but the cons simply outweight the pros.

1.) Most of these games can be found for free online through emulators or at a pawn shop or ebay for anywhere from 99 cents to $10.
2.) Most people already have the games for the NES
3.) I really don't think these games sell well (anybody have info on this?)
4.) Demand just isn't there.
